BlackRhino GNU/Linux
BlackRhino GNU/Linux was a free Debian-based GNU/Linux software distribution for the Sony PlayStation 2. It contains over 1,200 software packages to aid in using and creating programs for the Sony PlayStation 2 Linux kit. The programs range in functionality from simple games, to text editors, compilers, web servers, windowing systems, database systems, graphics packages, mail servers and a variety of other tools and utilities. The software distribution was created by xRhino for a commercial Sony PlayStation 2 title. It was released in the hopes that the distribution will help hobbyists create their own games and applications that utilize the advanced programmable hardware of the PS2.

NEW • HP Taps Mandrake for Desktops |

This is a nice long review and a good newbie guide to installing and using Mandrake Linux 9.1, as written by open-mag.com: "At first, the feel of Mandrake can be very off-putting and it's easy to dismiss it as quirky or even broken. Nothing could be further from the truth. Like an exquisite bottle of Petrus, Mandrake comes out big and massive. To savor the subtle undertones, you need to let this one breathe, and breathe a lot. No rush to judgement is allowed here; for that judgement may be sadly flawed. Mandrake needs to be savored and allowed to come alive. Do this and you may discover the perfect replacement for Windows on the desktop." See the complete review with screenshots.

Open for Business has published a review of Libranet GNU/Linux 2.8: "If you haven't already guessed, we were extremely pleased with Libranet GNU/Linux. It is not the type of distribution you can just pull out of the box and expect everything to be the way you want it, but it has a really strong foundation that makes it worth the extra effort just for the benefits. If you are a more experienced GNU/Linux system administrator, you should not overlook this distribution for your evaluation checklist -- with a bit of work you will get a system that will return that small investment of extra time with years of effortless updates and reliable service." This is the first release candidate of the upcoming Lycoris Desktop/LX Amethyst Update 3: "The Lycoris Development Team is hard at work finishing Desktop/LX Update 3. Release candidate 0 is now available! All users can use the Update Wizard to update their systems to.....drumroll....build 119. Yes, not only do we have a new public beta, but it is the first for release candidate status! One of the very biggest announcements is that Desktop/LX now writes windows shares. Yes, you can not only read all the files from your old system, but you can also write files there as well! Networking is much easier, as many people also use their windows box as a server. So, the current stable release is build 46 - Update 2. The current Release candidate is build 119. Update 3 will go gold as soon as we have enough feedback from the community about stability." NEW • Review: SuSE Linux Desktop |
Rate this project
|
ZDNet reviews SuSE Linux Desktop, the enterprise edition of SuSE's flagship product: "In a real-world production environment, we found that SuSE Linux Desktop worked surprisingly well, and supplied all the software needed in a typical office. In fact, some of the software was better than its Windows equivalents, such as the XMMS media player, which imitates WinAmp but is somewhat easier to use. In general, we did not find using Linux in a Windows-centric environment to be a handicap, which is saying a lot. However, the problems we did come across (particularly the apparent limitations of Samba), and the amount of tinkering required to solve them, raised serious doubts about recommending Linux for widespread office use just yet." NEW • Klaus Knopper: "I Never Had a Windows PC" |
Rate this project
|
PcTechTalk interviews Klaus Knopper of KNOPPIX: "The KNOPPIX CD edition has a little problem with disk space, mostly caused by well-meant suggestions about useful programs to include. Software tends to continuously grow, so, since the CD is already full with 1.8GB of software (compressed, physical space 700MB), I have to remove some software on every new release. This is sad, because once you got used to a program, even if it is "just a game" for testing the graphics and sound capabilities of new hardware, you will miss it once it is gone, and of course many people complain if their favorite program is gone in a new release. Fabian Franz, author of some of the packages on KNOPPIX, is currently working on a modularized version of KNOPPIX, based on Debian meta packages and KNOPPIX-specific packages. So, you could use a build system to build your own version and include just the packages you want." The rest of the interview is here.

Rate this project
|
Damn Small Linux 0.4.1 is out. Changes: "Now in 0.4.1 there is the choice of two X servers -- Xvesa and Xfbdev. Xfbdev uses the framebuffer provided by the Linux framebuffer device. That means it may be a much better choice for older laptops. In fact I have a couple of old laptops (Pentium I) that were completely incompatible with Xvesa but worked very well with the framebuffer server. The key is to use a FB that your laptop can support -- this has to be selected at boot time. In the case of these two Pentium Is fb800x600 did the trick. (If your hardware supports it, Xvesa is still preferred because it is more flexible and faster.) Also new for 0.4.1 is the emelFM file manager. I liked worker a lot, but emelFM is simpler and has practically no learning curve. Also, emelFM is smaller than Worker, and I needed the room!" See the changelog for more information. This is a lengthy review of LindowsOS 4.0 by The Inquirer: "Lindows has a killer Linux distro. I can finally recommend a Linux distro for 'common people', without fear of being bugged repeatedly over the phone with questions, or awaken in the middle of the night asking why some application doesn't install. But 'it's not really Linux, how come a Linux doesn't include the GCC compiler?? why no gnome?' -I hear you all Debian, Mandrake, SuSE, Red Hat fans saying. OK, if you want to say so, then it's not Linux, but for me, it's 'a better Lindows than Linux'. One you can install into your mother's PC without headaches." Read the full story with screenshots.

Rate this project
|
Linux Universe reviews the latest beta release from Red Hat Linux, version 9.0.93: "There aren't many major changes, just a bunch of minor tweaks. Most of these are welcome additions though. The one gripe I have is that Red Hat doesn't seem sure if they want to have this be a desktop for the average, not-very technical person (e.g., they hide the boot messages) or be one for the more advanced or technical user (e.g., Emacs is installed by default for a personal desktop). There are people who are confused or intimidated by the boot messages and there are people that use Emacs, but I am pretty sure that there are very few people who actually fall into both categories. Overall though it makes a very good desktop. I have no problems recommending it as a choice to those who are looking for a GNU/Linux based desktop system. It should improve even more by the time of final release." The full review.

NEW • Review: The New Lindows Version 4 |
Rate this project
|
This is a yet-another-review of LindowsOS 4.0, by Ron Garland: "The most impressive thing to me during the installation was that Lindows automatically found and configured my ethernet card, obtained my IP address etc. - something that Windows, even XP Pro, has not been able to do without input from me. That was what I call a 'wizard'. Without any input from me, my machine was online via my cable modem from the moment it booted up! Fabulous compared with Windows - and other Linux versions - a real 'wizard' beside which Windows wizards are mere 'sorcerer's apprentices'." Read the long and detailed review here.

NEW • Kneat KNOPPIX! |

KDE News gives the latest KNOPPIX a test drive and finds the experience overwhelmingly positive: "Finally, it worked! It installed, booted, went directly into KDE3 and I suddenly have a fully functional KNOPPIX system on my backup machine and it looks great. I love it. I totally love it. In fact, I keep the CD in my purse and bring it around with me to show people. It's little geeky me, but it's great and people are wowed. This is Linux like they never knew existed. I'm dispelling the 'Command Line Mode Only' picture with this one CD and I'm doing a great job of it." The full story.

NEW • Lindows 4.0 Reviewed |

|
Linux Universe reviews LindowsOS 4.0 and gives it a favourable score: "Lindows is not perfect, but the overall experience was very good. I was pleasantly surprised. The install was one of the most painless I have ever done for a Linux distribution. The install was extremely fast and the system itself post-install was very snappy and responsive in most situations. Lindows is currently about as good as it gets for Linux on the consumer desktop." LindowsOS 4.0 gets an overall score of 82/100; click here for the complete story.

NEW • Update about MandrakeSoft Status |
Rate this project
|
"As most of you know, MandrakeSoft filed for Chapter 11 protection at the end of January 2003. This meant that we were granted a court appointed administrator and given the opportunity to renegotiate our liabilities. This process is running smoothly, and we are happy to report that since January MandrakeSoft has been 'cash-flow positive'. Our immediate goal is to exit from this status before the end of the current year. Agreed, this is an aggressive schedule, but this is the plan that I am focused on, and I strongly believe it is achievable." The rest of the press release about the current financial status and future plans at MandrakeSoft is available here.
