More malware found in the Snap repository |
|
A month ago we shared a story about malware being distributed through Canonical's Snap repository. The low-effort malware made little effort to hide its nature, calling into question Canonical's vetting processes, or even whether the company has any criteria for allowing new Snap packages to be added to its store. Since then another ten malicious apps claiming to be Bitcoin wallet applications have been discovered in the Snap repository: "As with all these scam application, all it does is ask for a Bitcoin recovery phrase, and with that will likely steal all the coins and send them off to the scammer's wallet. Obviously I didn't test this with a real wallet phrase. When given a false passphrase/recovery-key it calls some remote API then shows a dubious error, having already taken your recovery key, and sent it to the scammer." Additional details can be found in Alan Pope's blog post. |
