Debian debates Xscreensaver |
|
A debate has broken out on the Debian bug tracker concerning the Xscreensaver package. The Xscreensaver application displays a pop-up message when it is started which reads, "Warning: This version of XScreenSaver is VERY OLD! Please upgrade! (If this is the latest version that your distro ships, then your distro is doing you a disservice. Build from source.)" This warning appears each time the software is launched and appears on any installations where the version of Xscreensaver is more than 18 months old. Since Debian packages are maintained, frozen apart for security and important fixes, for multiple years this message will annoy desktop users for half the life span of a Debian release. Some Debian users have asked that the pop-up be removed. However, Xscreensaver's developer, Jamie Zawinski, has asked that Debian remove the Xscreensaver package entirely rather than remove the pop-up. Xscreensaver is commonly used by lighter desktop environments such as Xfce, LXDE and Lumina. |
