STAR based on Devuan is simply one of the best distributions that I've installed. The wide range of distributions is only one aspect of STAR, a truly minimalist approach to Linux.
Pro: Boots up to a mere 145mb of ram at login, that is with a desktop running JWM, have Openbox on my laptop and even lower ram usage.
Very nicely themed and icons, like the dark theme.
Not bloated, just a few nice apps to have to get a user started.
Not an ignored distro, the dev apparently keeps up with upstream releases.
Powerful, robust configuration and dependable, handle whatever you can throw at it.
Fast and responsive, very quick, absolutely no stumbling or delays.
Cons: Some might say wallpaper, never use one but if I did wouldn't be any distros default image. Nothing is better than something you don't want.
Really like STAR, have the same JWM that Devuan Jessie release as an alpha has continually updated without error!
Very impressed with its simplicity, give it a try!
What a great distro, no wallpaper but runs perfectly without errors. Small distribution based on Devuan ASCII, running Star Xfce. Absolutely a well thought out distribution and super light on cpu resources. Just a hand full of default apps, not bloated at all. Easy enough for the noob with the common Debian installer and yet sophisticated more the more experienced user.
Cons: Theme could use some work, but the overall distro is easily customized to the users liking.
Pro: Too many to list, it is a minimalist dream. Solid and robust and just dependable. No problem throwing whatever on it and it just works!
Highly recommended. Drop by Sourceforge, Star and check out all the available builds. Can't go wrong!
As someone in the comment section said, this is Linux it should be, without any additional bloatwares but allowing you to install whatever you want. For me, everything is working out of box, you just have to set it up the way you like.
This distro is the best operative system I have ever found so far. After installing and without doing anything, using xfce it consumes only 200 mbs. Doing something else this operative system consumes the resources you always thought your operative system should consume and no memory leaks etc etc.
I have stop using it though because of one single reason... the resources used by this operative system made it so that I could actually use two virtual box machines at the same time. Thats great. I did this for security. However after reinstalling the operative system I found out the linux-headers do not match my kernel... and this means I am not able to make work oracle box... because I am not able to update the kernels neither... and the linux headers available do not match my kernel...
Security wise its a devuan system less used than systemd so in general less malware but because I cant make work oracle box anymore... its useless to me as I am always playing with virtual machines...
Hopefully I will be able to come up with a way to make oracle box to work or find something similar to this distro...
I tested the XFCE flavour of Star kirk 2.0.1 and I am very happy with it.
Good thing, there is Synaptic package Manager, from which I drew a number of programs such as "gnome-commander" and "Thunderbird" for example.
Everthing seemed to work very well. Screen was there, internet was there etc.
I liked the dark theme - easy on the eyes. Keyboard was easy to change.
One little misfunction I noticed : Upon rebooting it rebooted itself and didn't give me the chance to eject the CD. But that's small fry.
Some people might say, this is how LINUX should be : simple, fast, no frills but it all works !
The developers are definitely on the right track and I would like to thank them for a distro well done!
I would consider Star as not a fork of Devuan, but a flavour or spin of Devuan. I am using i3wm due to its sane ease of use, a non-programmer like myself will find it easy to configure as the config is all plain text.
Star i3wm is really light, and modular, so basically you are given the essentials upon a fresh install, then you can build on the base install to get what you want.
Being Devuan based, Star is highly stable and Debian / Devuan fans will find package management easy, as well as configuration.
Star is an awesome minimalist dream, lightweight, and super fast distribution based on Devuan. Can't get any faster or smaller memory footprint. Uses live-build with Debian/Devuan installer, coupled with a few applications OOTB to get a user up and going, not a bloated distro.
Configured for speed and boast several Wm's, Xfce also a netinstall distro.
Came across Star years ago while distro hopping, still using it now. The very best Linux has to offer.
Run Star JWM 32 bit, appreciate the developer's consideration for those who still use 32 bit for the many different reasons. Have an older computer myself.
Extremely fast while booting into about 135 mb of memory usage with the desktop.
Nicely themed OOTB, other themes to choose from. JWM has been my long-term favorite Window Manager and really like what Star has to offer in configuration.
Very minimal in approach, has everything for anyone to get started, Overall rate Star very high because of the Devuan base and super stable.
Star is by far the best Devuan derivative, currently running Fluxbox, Openbox and JWM on my Toshiba laptop.
Zero issues with WiFi, like Connman network manager over Wicd or any other. Smart choice!
Attractive dark theme and icons, comfort vision wise above much brighter themes.
Truly a minimalist approach to computer configuration, comes packed with a handful of needed applications. No need to pre-install the kitchen sink if not wanted by the user.
Welcome-screen (star-welcome) is a nifty tool to add some tools and applications, glad to see it in use still.
Star is a sophisticated, first class rated distribution and can't go wrong with Devuan as a base. My daily driver is Fluxbox and about 6 months ago upgraded to Ascii and then later about two months ago to Ceres without even a single error message and runs stable as Jessie. Ceres is the unstable branch of Devuan, yet the devs at Devuan is not making the same mistakes as Debian with premature releases creating a dependency nightmare.
STAR is an excellent distribution, use it on my Dell 32 bit machine with JWM. Out of many 32 bit distros found STAR to be the fastest and beyond stable. Runs like a new PC.
Wifi? Ran a check and STAR comes with every wifi driver than Debian or Ubuntu does. Strange that someone might have issues other than it could be their router, or ISP causing the issues.
STAR is a minimalist distribution, no button or automatic notification of updates, very lame thinking such a creature with JWM. That is what the terminal is for. No automatic updating the menu, that is why it comes with a text editor and a .jwmrc file while other files with menu, etc are found in .config/jwm.
A minimalist distribution is not quite barebones but allows the user who should have skills efficient enough to configure the install to their liking.
STAR does the job, I'm happy and grateful for that!
Lack of wifi support in any distro is a deal breaker for me, so I give it 7 for the general concept.
More lightweight distros, mean better options for the end user, this is a nice distro, just lacks some necessary drivers to be a good distro out of the box.
Have been using STAR for several years, both as Debian and Devuan. Use STAR openbox called Morbius, very minimalistic but has everything you need to build on.
Themes and icons are excellent, good looks from the start. Uses a welcome-screen to download additional apps depending on the users needs. Like this idea, not bloated with a lot of unwanted applications
Not a resource hog, very lean on CPU and memory usage, This distro is the fastest I've seen or used.
Devuan is relatively a new distribution, one must understand that the most knowledgeable and seasoned veterans from Debian forked to create Devuan. A little behind but better stable than a mess like Debian.
STAR was one of the first to create a Devuan derivative, my install has been there since i have been.t was an alpha release and upgraded without an issue. Very happy and content with a systemd-less distribution and trust it fully.
STAR has many Wm's and a DE (xfce) to choose from, give it a try and believe you will enjoy and be impressed too!
