It's my second short review (Asus T100TA User). It's getting weird. Distro is updated, packages are updated but most important thing, Firefox Browser is obsolete 52.9.0 ESR version. Don't understand why developer didn't update it to version ESR 60.x.
This is an amazing product! It's super fast, secure and easy to configure. Maintaining groups of kiosks with the premium server is extra convenient. There are lots of options for kiosk configuration and this distro met my needs for hardware compatibility. I had some trouble with WiFi drivers initially but I was able to remaster the ISO to include the ones I needed, which is not a very difficult process.
Porteus is an excellent Kiosk OS. It does everything it says it does. It is secure. Has great settings choices at install. Is fast to boot. Can control all aspects of system operation and take security measures as necessary. Has professional business support available. Has free and business plans available. Only downside is once settings are set they are set. Upside installation is fast and easy so changes are quickly made. Can install remotely or via flash drive.
This is the most stable Linux (just a browser; although recently even viewers for pdf and doc's etc) I have seen. It just works solid. Every reboot the system is clean as a whistle, never worries about viruses etc. I burn it, using dubaron under windows, or just dd under linux, onto a harddisk (SSD) partition and it boots very fast (like 30sec = very old computer 2008). Perfect for safe banking or emailing (to start a totally clean session, the reset only takes like 3 seconds). Lots of good professional manuals explaining how to use it. Burning onto USB stick is easiest (I use Rufus under windows; beware to select dd option). Onto a partition a little tricky (you need a little knowledge on bootmenus), but works flawless also. Very nice customizations are there (add some of the most important favorites into FireFox is really handy).
Very happy they started the 'cloud' version now. So I even can create documents in the cloud, and safe my stuff even onto a separate USBstick. In short "Kiosk is my favorite secure browser for fast boot to just do my stuff". And nowadays the 'suspend' function works perfect (PC 165 Watt goes downto around 10Watt and back into business in 1 click).
Very highly recommended for anywhere that requires a secure, locked down browser based environment. I have used this for the last few versions and, provided one pays attention to the steps to follow for installation, have found it to be rock solid and fast.
One can even customise the installation beyond what is offered by the kiosk configuration wizard. It truly is one of the fastest distros I have ever used. If I were a library IT manager, or other places requiring a 'kiosk' type installation, I would need look no further than Porteus Kiosk. Excellent product.
Just test driver this Kiosk distro.
Amazed at how simple and fast it is. Boot less than 20 seconds with HDD, SSD will be less than 10secs.
The whole thing is less than 80Mb, but ask for 1G usable space.
I will give it a 10 out of 10 points.Anyone that need a kiosk solution, look no further, this package will make your life much easier
It's hard to configure browsers:you need to use other linux distro to do it. Expect hardware support problems. On my Asus T100TA it was constantly beeping after booting. No UEFI support (but you can add it yourself if you remix their kiosk iso). Need to pay for updates. No easy way to install on a HDD but it is possible after some work - frugal install and configure bootloader on your own. They think it's more secure to boot from USB, I don't get it. Generally It's not good but still best option available for free users. Would love to see a new kiosk distro with easy browser updates and browser/network configuration without being forced to reinstall every time or using other linux to remix settings.
