When FreeBSD started to get politically co-opted by various groups, it was time for me to look beyond the horizon again, to see what else is out there where I wouldn't run into more social media drama. OmniOS, the legitimate heir to Solaris and one of the few free SysV Unixes, is a wonderful upgrade: ZFS and DTrace are present, the NetBSD package manager pkgsrc is naturally supported, and the developers, even though there aren't many left, are doing their best to keep OmniOS maintained and modern after the end of commercial support by OmniTI. I haven't tried OmniOS on the desktop yet, but on the server it's pleasantly quiet: it just works. I've never seen any crashes, everything is performant and stable, and the manuals are, of course, beyond reproach. Highly recommended.
