Best LXDE out of box experience thanks to the artwork and polish of the Lubuntu team. With the LTS base, this lean, lightweight and easy to use distro transforms any Windows computer to a productive machine with long term stability and support. Lubuntu 18.04 LTS is my go to distro for a workstation.

I love Lubuntu!!!
I was using one of the top rated distros for a long time on my work laptop... I bought a lightweight cheap smaller laptop with only 4gb of ram and decided to try a more lightweight distro, and I chose Lubuntu because I had good experiences in the past and it was basically the only one I managed to install from the selection that I had on my USB drives... I think Lubuntu has improved and is amazing, solid fast and reliable, just simply a very pleasant experience. Simple, fast smooth and nice, no problems... I just love this distro, especially for computers that has less RAM and/or older hardware...
THANKS to the team!

I find this to be an excellent desktop environment/OS to work on as a daily driver. The fact that its background is Ubuntu makes it even more robust with assured support for current and future releases.
I really dig the simplicity of the desktop environment and hope they maintain this long into the future. This is certainly a less resource intense environment and appreciate such.
Installing it on an old iMac 5,1(white bezel) has revived this old piece of hardware and has been a staple in my home.
The basics are provided and no sluggishness throughout use of the OS on a daily basis (actually typing this review on it now).

What do you like best?
Simple minimum GUI and all of the Ubuntu features make is easy to use...
What do you dislike?
GUI is not very pretty like Windows, MAC or Linux Mint are...
What business problems are you solving with the product?
I use it as my Linux distribution for my research work and small business operations needs...

I have used Lubuntu 18.04 on four different laptops (including a very slow 32-bit legacy machine). There are a few minor flaws. The LXDE desktop is not shiny and sexy and covered in glitter, but it runs fast and does exactly what it should.
Being new to Linux there was a learning curve for me. But there is lots of documentation about how to solve common problems on Ubuntu bases systems on line.
I may stay with Lubuntu 18.04 for a long time.

LXDE + Ubuntu + polish = a fast and pleasant user experience on any hardware. Lubuntu is the best LXDE experience you can get since the Lubuntu team polish it up and add nice icon, widget and window border themes. And you get all the advantages of Ubuntu minus the slow and bloated Gnome desktop.

Lubuntu 18.04 with LXDE on top of Ubuntu LTS is the best fast and easy to use distro for a machine that you want to just work and not change for a few years. LXDE is fast and stable and the long term support gives you a lot of time if you do not want anything to change. For those complaining about the new LXQt, Lubntu 18.04 with LXDE is still supported and will be for a long time.

Terrible!
If i could i would give it a 0!
LXDE was the best now LXQT sucks...its heavy as hell!
Users suggestions rarely gets implemented, they dont really care about it;
ITs not a light system anymore and even xubuntu with xfce is lighter.
As far as its not light anymore there is no reason to use it!
Also Hi DPI is a huge problem for LXQT.
There is no reason to use it instead of Debian or ubuntu with other DE's.

Lubuntu is an excellent choice not just for older computers but new ones too - even if you use a UEFI system (I believe 16.x or higher). Lubuntu's low demand for systems with simpler (older) hardware is what make it so fast. Single-core processors with barely capable GUI graphics and limited RAM to the latest bleeding edge technology will almost certainly experience a first time no-fuss boot (though you probably will want to do some configuring later on). Translation: This is meant for beginners to even hard core geeks who want something that just works right out of the box.
I can only suggest Ubuntu or maybe even Linux Mint which may be better choices for more current/capable hardware. But it's hard - very hard to ignore this distro especially if you have a low capacity thumb drive with room to only hold one OS. In fact, that may be Lubuntu's biggest "feature" is that it's still distributed in a relatively small ISO & not crammed with tons of needless bloat. Just "burn" it to a thumb drive and you're done. Use a burner that supports "persistence" and you can even save files, bookmarks & configuration settings without installing! What's best is that it's basically a "fork" of the industry leading Ubuntu meaning you will (always) have support for it and still be able to install a plethora of software that you choose later on.
TLDR; If you're looking for the "Swiss Knife" of Linux distro's, this is it!

MAde intensive tests with both, lxqt and lxde versions!
The difference is huge, lxqt is not lightweight and i dont see reason to use it!
Tested on more than 4 machines with 1gb ram and dual core processors, the results are disgusting!
Bodhi linux with enlightenment and spark linux with LXDE and antix with icewm gave better results!
At this point there is no reason to use lubuntu on an old computer, its not light anymore, the same goes to all those ubuntu base distros with xfce and lxqt.
Its time for them to move to icewm and enlightenment if they want to keep it usable for older computers!

18.04 is perfect for a workstation that you want to be fast and stable. !8.10 is good if you are curious about LXQt, but 18.04 is wonderful if you want long term stability and the more mature LXDE desktop which is still maintained (even if many people think it is not).
When the next LTS is ready, the LXQt experience in Lubuntu will be well polished after three interim releases with improvements. Until then, 18.04 is the best experience.

Lubuntu 18.10 with LXQT Desktop;I idle, more ram usage than Peppermint 9.
319/320 MB for Peppermint OS 9;
362/367 MB for Lubuntu 18.10. (It can vary, of course, from one machine to another, but this example tell us the point.)
Conclusion: Lubuntu is not lightweight anymore.
Furthermore, Whiskermenu on Peppermint 9 (an Hybrid desktop, LXDE with XFCE panel and elements) is faster, when you enter windows key, than LXQT menu on Lubuntu.
Besides Peppermint 9 being nicer than Lubuntu 18.10 (in my opinion, of course. This is too subjective). And Peppermint uses Nemo as a file explorer, that has more functionality than Pcmanfm and Thunar
On the other hand XFCE desktop is more efficient and has more tools and is easy to easier to configure than LXQT.
In spite of this, Lubuntu 18.10 is still a good choice. For instance, Lubuntu is faster than majority distros opening applications.

I have been using Lubuntu since 10.10, using 18.04 LTS for six months now and it is almost flawless. It is very solid and everything works well. Customization is good and it runs fats on my modest hardware. I have evaluated Lubuntu 18.10 with the new LXQt desktop and it shows good promise as it will lead to LXQt being used for 20.04 LTS, although I am sticking with 18.04 LTS and its LXDE desktop for now.

I have been using Lubuntu for several years, and in my experience PCManFM is persistently unstable and subject to regular random crashes. Typically, after using PCManFM for a while it freezes when a folder is selected (mouse left-click) and crashes. Since upgrading to Lubuntu 18.04, these PCManFM crashes have become more frequent (5+ crash per day). Similar problems have been reported by others, but apparently the fundamental issue remains unresolved by Lubuntu Team

I've been playing around with Linux and various distros for a while now because I was sick of the lagging with windows and I wanted the lightest most stable distro I could find. Lubuntu 17.10 seems to fit the bill for speed. I do basic computing so not much need for the programming end of Linux. 18.04 and above seems to be slower on my system so I'm sticking with 17.10. I think i'll be getting used to Linux thanks to Lubuntu :-)

Lubuntu 18.10 shows off the LXQt desktop really well. Coupled with some nice Qt applications and some FOSS staples like Firefox and LibreOffice, Lubuntu 18.10 is one of those distros that come with everything you need out of the box and just works. The Ubuntu base means there is plenty of software available. The Lubuntu team has polished the LXQt experience with custom icons and background that makes the distro realy cohesive and beautiful. Even if LXQt needs a bit more RAM than LXDE, it is still both light and full featured and makes your hardware fly.
These six month releases are good if you want the newest software and want to try out LXQt on Lubuntu, but for a rock solid workstation, I would still go with Lubuntu 18.04, since these interim releases only get nine months of support and the LTS gets five years.

Lubuntu with LXDE was my favorite OS for years and years. Rock solid, fast, easy to configure and no bloat. A solid 10, no matter if it was used with an old computer, or a brand new one.
Lubuntu with LXQT on the other hand is a big disappointment. In my eyes, there is no reason for it to exist.
Xubuntu now does everything better and faster, and if I want anything from the QT-side, I go straight to Kubuntu or KDE-Neon.

A good first with LXQt for Lubuntu. I think the 18.04 LTS still has a bit of an edge with the mature LXDE desktop on top of the Ubuntu LTS core, but the 18.10 version is only slightly more demanding of RAM and comes with a saner choice of programs. I have subtracted one for the lack of translation to my language, but this will probably be fixed before the next LTS is out. Unless your machines is more than fifteen years old, the slightly increased demands Lubuntu 18.10 puts on it will make little or no difference. For the really low end machines, there are other distros like Antix, Puppy, Quirky and DamnSmallLinux.

Lubuntu 18.10 is the easiest way to get to a well put together LXQt desktop with a nice selection of porgrams added. Everything works well, except that LXQt hasn't yet been translated to all languages. Lubuntu still gives you the fastest and leanest of all the official Ubuntu flavours and LXQt has become mature and ready fro prime time by now, so using the six month releases to polish up the LXQt experience in Lubuntu before the next LTS seems like a really good idea.

LXDE is rock solid and the Ubuntu base with five years of support has all the software I need. Lubuntu lets me use my machine as fast as possible and save my RAM and processor cycles for the programs and games I run. It's the best Ubuntu flavour in my opinion. It works really well on new hardware and also runs on older machines without a problem.

I needed something lightweight that could help a person who was stuck with a Windows XP netbook (Gateway KAV60) that only had 1GB of RAM. I wanted to setup an easy to use system that would be secure. I had expected running the latest software on such an ancient machine to be barely passable, but L'ubuntu 18.04 (32-bit) more than met expectations. It runs much faster than XP ever did on this hardware, playing games, streaming video, and web browsing. For this particular niche, it was the perfect solution.

Not that familiar good old Lubuntu anymore - not that snappy, simple, small anymore. An iso of 1.6 Gb should be a joke.
With the switch to LXQt (after years of delays), we now have a product I don't know what niche it belongs to. If qt-based we now have optimized KDE Plasma, being modern looking, snappy and highly configurable. And for gtk-fans we have XFCE - familiar, stable, fast, simple as it always is.
If you want a nice Ubuntu-based LXDE setup, download RUNTU 18.04.1 Lite. I don't get how this great distro is so underrated, but you get an equivalent of what Lubuntu used to be a year ago, but better - without bloat, fast and simple... (surprise) at just 600 Mb iso. Don't be scared of it being a Russian distro - English works just fine.

Return most of the default applications as the new Falkon browser it is not ready for prime time! Another nice add would be a LCD clock like other disto's have already.
Libre Office should not be included by default since it is a large program steals lightness of Lubuntu. Should continue to include AbiWord it is excellent and lightweight.
The main point of Lubuntu is to be and keep it lightweight stupid!

A couple of days worth of experience on a 32bit installed version:
1. LXQt is visually a bit better than LXDE (OOTB), but the developers have to pay more attention to consistent theming (if hat;s their aim). The default legacy window theme was horrible.
2. Software Manager crashes or hangs 9 times out of 10.
3. The smoothness of Lubuntu over the years has worsened. Been using it since 2014-ish.
4. Alternative distros like MX Linux are light on resources as well but have really tweaked those things that matter to an average user.
5. I fully support the team's decision to got with Libre Office. Works great. But the browser should be Firefox.
6. The "Menu" should've be better after all these years, I was hoping for it in the LXQt version, but was disappointed. It really makes a difference.
Overall okay. But the switch has to be justified (and I think it can be). Great work on the part of developers. Will be trying if out after 5-6 months. Back to MX-Linux.

I installed Lubuntu on my father's old laptop. He is a basic user, an internet browser, office applications and a media player pretty much enough for him almost fifteen years. Anyway 32 bit version is even more lightweight than 64 bit counterpart. It's never hard on processor, about 250mb ram usage while standby. Quick boot time and also shutdown time is about three seconds. Also it's based on Ubuntu so a basic user like me or my father can use solutions for possible problems easily. There are tons of wiki pages, forums and the community are very kind and willing to help each other. One down side for me is, it looks so old, like a theme pack enabled Windows 98 but the stability, low source usage and speed can easily overcome that negative side. If you are looking for an os for ancient laptops, desktops Lubuntu is what you are looking for.

I've used Lubuntu on every computer I have owned at one point or another. It is simply a great OS. I like the basic install that only comes with a few of the apps compared to the full install. It is also great as a virtual machine because of its low system resource requirements. If you are new to Linux and are looking to try something as a VM, this might be a good place to start.
Regardless, it is stable, fast, efficient, and user-friendly.

Lubuntu is stable, fast, lightweight and has a traditional desktop layout. It is easy to use for new users coming from Windows or MacOS and the desktop just works as expected. For more experienced Linux users, Lubuntu is also very customisable, both via GUI and CLI.
Lubuntu 18.04 is my goto for a rock solid workstation as it has the ideal balance of software availability, stability, good looks and all the features I need without all the features I don't need. The desktop is simple and elegant.
I am looking forward to see what the Lubuntu team does with LXQt in Lubuntu 18.10 and the other 6-month releases now that LXQt is finally ready for prime time, but I will keep my main workstation on the LXDE-based 18.04 LTS until the next LTS is out to get maximum stability in my workflow.

Lubuntu 18.04 is not as good as former lubuntu distros. It takes too much time to boot and it's not that light on my system. Plus Lubuntu 17.04 and 17.10 have been already reached end of life. Ubuntu is not supporting them yet. Lubuntu 16.04 couldn't recognize my data card's drivers. My data card is manufactured in 2017. So, Lubuntu wouldn't your choice if you have an old computer and want to run LXDE . There's a better option fedora LXDE. LXDE is still better than LXQT.

I could rate it 10/10 but I give it 9/10 because of two reasons- 1. There is only a few months gap is present between End of life and release date. 2. I'm operating lubuntu 17.04, whenever I tried to download updates, they make system buggy. I don't know why it happened. So, I presumed lubuntu 17.04 new updates consist of so many bugs. Even though, one cannot open a software or a file after updating lubuntu 17.04.
Allover, I would rate it 9/10. It works too fast in my PC. I'm operating through dual-boot. It's better than windows 7 or XP. Those windows OS are vulnerable to viruses and malwares. But lubuntu and other linux distros are more secure. I like Bodhi Linux too. I gave a try it and it was better than lubuntu. If you do have an old computer with low specs you should install either bodhi or lubuntu. Both are the best lightweight OS of all the linux distros. Don't give a try to puppy unless your computer is too old (bought in 1995-2000). Puppy seems to be very old fashioned os. Lubuntu and Bodhi both can give new look to an old PC.

Looking forward to version 18.10 but right now using 18.04 LTS on my desktop computer no problems to report at this time so I do recommend using this version...

When you need to get some work done, use Lubuntu. It has an old school interface of desktop, taskbar, start menu and productive right-click context menus.
It does what a good DE should do, open up your programs easily and quickly so that you can do some work, and when you're working it gets out of your face.
DE's that have windows flying about and wobbling etc do absolutely nothing for your productivity, they just eat your RAM.
Lubuntu is the Honda Civic of OS's, it starts first time every time, gets you where you're going in comfort, and is light on gas.
Pros:
Does what it says on the tin
Light on hardware resources
Backed by the Canonical group LTS
Easy transition experience from MS or Apple
Cons:
Some may say it looks 'dated', well, if you sit and stare at you DE all day then you aren't getting much work done
Highly recommended for disgruntled Windows and MacOS escapees who are fed up with having their pockets rinsed and their data sold to god knows who.

Lubuntu has been my workhorse for 3 years and I love it more each single day. Stable, "old school" user interface which does not get in your way, fully customizable (although a bit manually by editing ~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml but you can make it behave in whichever way you want it to) and even on modest hardware blazingly fast.
Industrial strength, speed and ease of use. A real work tool.

Best official flavour of Ubuntu if you want a fast, reliable, customisable and lightweight desktop with a good default experience and pleasant artwork. The 18.04 version with long term support makes a great workstation. The software availability of Ubuntu makes it even better. 18.04 has been the best Lubuntu thus far. I have used Lubuntu since 11.10.

Very intuative, easy to use and lightweight. Perfectly made for ageing laptops. Appearance/design is a bit dated, but still very good. 16.04 is my choice over 18.04...

All the advantages of Ubuntu LTS (long time support, lots of available software, good documentation online) and with the added bonus of the fast, stable, customisable, good looking and less resource hungry LXDE desktop that lets any machine be the fastest it can be. My favourite distro since 11.10

I looked for a ubuntu-based OS to install alongside Windows 10 on a 128Gb SSD. Lubuntu seemed the most lightweight yet full featured distro.
I installed version 16.04 a few weeks ago and have just upgraded to 18.04 flawlessly.
It's very fast and smooth and looks pretty. I've installed a bunch of development tools and environments without any problem so far.

Lubuntu works well on my old HP laptop (Elitebook). I have tried about 60 diffrent Linux OS:s
and there are two very good OS:s: Lubuntu and Solus.
Lubuntu has better Software center (more programs).
The Lubuntu- layout is not so good (KXstudio has the best). The game Aisleriot
is too simple, Solus has the same program, but there are more alternatives in
Settings.
So, after 3 years I finally found a good Linux OS: Lubuntu.
I use both Lubuntu and Solus on my computer every day.
Lubuntu has good video editing programs, software for children, it is easy to use, and
something for beginners.

While it runs fine as a live distro, and installation is easy enough, Lubuntu 18.04 is a major disappointment.
As the sole installation on an i5 processor with 8 gig of ram, it is slow, it constantly freezes.
On top of this, too many applications that worked perfectly well in 16.04 simply no longer work.
It is also quite unconfigurable. It does not accept edits to the hot-keys, it does not accept configuration changes.
I shall revert to 16.04, which does work.

It can be a little buggy at times.
Most of the time it works fine though.
It's very fast.
UI is fine, toss the task bar to the top, install a dock and it's very similar to using a Mac.

Not prefect, but pretty good, overall.
I like Linux Mint XFCE better, and would ideally stick with it, but I wanted something lighter weight to speed up old hardware. Lubuntu definitely seems to fit the bill. It woke up this old, low end, single core laptop and made it much more tolerable to use.
Good:
Ideal choice for older hardware.
Should be VERY quick and snappy on machines with better hardware
Installed and updated very quickly and easily with no real issues
Seems to be able to do everything important that the bigger, more bloated distros can
Even with a number of extra programs installed, it uses very little HD space
Not so good:
The GUI could be considered plain on boring, but isn't bad if you add themes and do a few tweaks.
Definitely some bugs in the appearance/themes, the worst offenders I've found being:
Lubuntu Dark Panel causes the scroll bar in Firefox to disappear
Setting the panel to Auto-hide causes the volume control to hide even as you are trying to adjust it

I upgraded to 18.04 over the weekend and it looks great, runs fast and has that lightweight LXDE goodness. I have used Lubuntu on and off since 11.10 and this is the best release so far. It looks fresh and is even faster than 16.04 at starting up. Thank you so much to the Lubuntu community for making the best Ubuntu flavor!

Works without any flaw so far, I have installed about 20 extra programs and all work correctly and fast. On my hardware Ubuntu is fast enough, but Lubuntu is quicker and I like that I get much more control. And, several applications installed on Ubuntu 18.04 don´t show up in the program starter even if "All" is used. I have to use search to find and start them.
Lubuntu does not have any issues, everything installed appears in the menus.

Pretty much one of the best lightweight OSes for your aging computers. Everything is light and fast. UI is also pretty familiar, making the whole experience smooth and fluid.
In fact I installed it into one of the old desktops at work and basically revived it. I'm actually writing this review on that PC.

Wherever I may distrohop, I always come back to Lubuntu. It's because of its speed, ease of use and ease of customisability. It runs fast on anything from the last ten years and is even usable on really old and low end machines. For a rock solid workstation, the LTS every two years is king.

This is the best Lubuntu yet, IMHO.
Hardware: Lenovo T420 with 8GiB RAM (Lubuntu 64bit).
Encrypted installation took about 10 minutes, and went flawlessly.
Pros:
A very complete and useable live system, with mobile broadband support, and lots of really useful applications installed by default.
Very user-friendly, ideal for newcomers who are more familiar with Windows.
Easily configurable, especially if you write keyboard shortcuts (in the rc.xml file).
Very stable, and with full Ubuntu/Canonical support, with a strong development team.
Perfect for users who prefer a light, minimal system that can be easily customised.
The interface does not get in the way, which is good for productivity.
Cons:
LUKS encrypted external drives cannot be unlocked, but this can be easily remedied by installing 'libblockdev-crypto2' and either running 'sudo systemctl restart udisks2.service' in terminal, or by simply rebooting.
All-in all, an excellent distro.
Good work by the development team.

Best Ubuntu respin out there with the flexible and customisable LXDE desktop that doesn't use more RAM, CPU or GPU than a desktop needs (unlike Ubuntu's now default Gnome). Easy to use out of the box for new users, easy to customise if you want to change its look, feel, or behaviour, and easily runs on older or lower end computers. (I have run it on a 300MHz G3 iBook.)

Clean, stable, light.
I'm using the 16.04 release from may 2016,
I prefer this distro even if my desktop has 8 gb of ram and an i3 cpu.
Not the best esthetically, there are distros more appealing,
but light and fast, so this is not really a cons for me

The 6 month releases are really good if you want newer software than in the LTS. Lubuntu ships with the LXDE desktop which is fast, reliable and customisable. With the Ubuntu base, Lubuntu has the best selection of software you get on Linux except in the AUR. I use Lubuntu 17.10 on my small 12 inch laptop from 2010 and it is incredibly fast and light weight. With the addition of synapse for fast launching, compton for compositing and the panel on the left side with autohide, I get all of the screen for whatever I do and Lubuntu gives me all the bells and whistles I expect, like power settings, screen locking... The lubuntu minimal window borders maximises my screen real estate. Even after years of distrohopping, I always come back to Lubuntu. It's one of the very best distros out there.
