Really good distro and was surprised it runs well on my older hardware (Intel Core 2 E6600) with only 2GB RAM. Haven't been able to get the Knoppix Flash to make a bootable thumb drive. Keeps giving me the "failed to load ldlinux.c32" error. Tried several different things, but so far no luck. This is the reason for the "8" instead of a higher rating.

Great, stable distro. Runs without problem even on old 32 bit hardware (Intel Atom, 1.6 GHz, 2GB RAM). Knoppix has very solid hardware detection with both 32 and 64 bit Linux kernels. Huge number of applications are already included in Knoppix distro. Ready out of the box Linux distro.

Upsides:
It is smooth, fast, beautiful and well-packed with lots of pre-installed applications, including three browsers (Chromium, Firefox, and Tor), free games such as Freeciv, Wine (to run Windows applications), all Libre Office editions, a Bitcoin wallet, Torrent downloaders, and much more. And even with all this stuff, it is still light.
Downsides:
Persistence is very difficult to set up, even with the developers claiming the contrary. In my case (computer lacking hard drive and using a single 32 GB USB stick) I was unable to make any system changes or saved documents survive after reboot. Fatdog64, another live distro, despite its bugs and much poorer performance, allowed me to successfully create a persistent savefile.

8.6 deserves a 9 or 10. I have used many versions of KNOPPIX over the years and 8.2 was difficult to get running. 8.6 came up without trouble.
If you want your settings saved, you need to use the mkimage option to enable persistence when booting.
It runs much faster if it is loaded to an SSD using the option tohd=/dev/sdaXX to load it, and then subsequently the option fromhd=/dev/sdaXX option to run off it.
Most of the apps you might hope to find are already there. If you have persistence enabled, you can update and then add new apps from the repos, and then they will be saved along with your settings on your flashdrive.

Knoppix LIve is very stable and robust distro even on low end hardware (Intel Atom/1.6GHz/2GB RAM). Knoppix 8.2 has even remaster application biult in now. Persistency possible with additional boot option. Tonns of apps included in KNOPPIX is mindblowing. Nice idea would be to create a little slimmer KNOPPIX (let say under 2GB)

Initially looks fine, but you soon find out that configuration cannot be easily saved and anyone not using a German keyboard is stuffed or has to modify files every time they log in.
An attractive toy at best.
Avoid.

knoppix live on usb is a 10 out of 10, however:
you can not save configuration settings, bookmarks, browser settings, etc. - they get erased on reboot. so, what do you do with this excellent operating system ? naturally, you'd want to install it on your hard disk drive and make it a boot option.
this was a tough road as most of the walkthroughs on this topic have a lot to be desired. i did manage to install to hdd after creating a linux swap, and a partition formatted with an obscure file system (not ext4), and selected the boot option in bios. note: i was no longer able to boot to windows using grub, then, i was no longer able to boot to windows using windows boot loader. fortunately i imaged my windows partitions and macrium reflect was able to rebuild my mbr, because i had to abandon this project.
ok, why did i have to abandon the install ? because my mouse no longer worked after installing to hdd, where it worked on the live usb drive.
i still have the live usb drive, but it's more of a toy than a real o.s. after all, if you can't save settings, if you can't save any of your work (i mean, you can access your hard drive, but it isn't practical) and since the live cd is loaded in memory, and my memory is limited, this makes the o.s. more of a toy than anything else. the hard drive install was cumbersome, and then it didn't work.
my review is based on total functionality of knoppix. however, if you're only interested in running a live version, then this distribution is totally amazing

Previously, I had used Knoppix 7.2 which was a reliable live CD, and installed to disk just fine.
UNFORTUNATELY, this version (8.2) is unstable. Xorg hangs many times per session, the audio doesn't work on Firefox. As for software, I hesitate to use the word 'bloated' because I like the inclusion of several utilities, desktop environments, and Chrome browser... however, the stability of the base OS appears to have been compromised in favor of stuffing it full of apps & desktops.
Klaus has put a lot of work into this project over the years, but he needs to know 8.2 is buggy...
Moreover, the size makes installation more practical, so user/home accounts would be useful.
Avoid it.

Not my pc have 12 on-line. As I looked into repos not finding favorite packs. I will check back on knoppix at later date. Thanks to all for hard work on updates. jkb

As a long time Windows user & disciple to the Church of MIcrosoft, I have avoided Linux like the plague. I am also a former Network Engineer with 25 years IT experience & it was during that time, I discovered Knoppix. To me Knoppix was the tool you used to edit files & blow away partitions of Windows boxes that wouldn't boot. I'll be honest Linux terrified me for a long time, because I just simply didn't know how to use it. Well after using it from time to time for the above mentioned recuse task, I kept thinking "this thing is not only blazing fast, it has awesome desktop effects that I've never seen on Windows!" so I decided to take the plunge. Using a Knoppix 8.2 USB, I installed to a 2nd HDD in my laptop that I wasn't using (I have a primart M.2 2280 Samsung EVO 960 NvME 512GB as a C: & a SATA 3 7200RPM Hitachi 1TB. So now I can just boot into either Windows 10 on the NvME or Knoppix (Debian 9) on the 1TB, I am writing this on the Knoppix installation!

I've been using earlier versions of Knoppix for troubleshooting and rescuing Linux machines, but for some reason, this version doesn't work properly with ThinkPad T400 disk. The fdisk knows the drive, but dd can't find it. The drive is OK, I think, because I'm writing this on the very machine (running Mint 17.3 from that very HD).

This was the first GNU/Linux distro I tried ~ via a live CD c. 2007.
Excellent distro that's packed with handy tools.
Very fast even with the nice compiz effects (bar the wobbly windows).
Probably more suited to run from a USB rather than install on a HDD/SSD.

Many many tools and software.
If you have a PC that is down, you can use Knoppix to recover your data, repair your PC, or have a live functional system while waiting for troubleshooting.
You can use it to pass an anti-virus, securely delete data, partition, make backups, etc.
When I need a live distribution, it's the one I use.

Probably the best all around Linux distribution. I have been using it for years. Very easy to use for old UNIX and
Sun users. I keep it on several 64GB sticks and always carry a few of the latest DVD copies to hand out to any
user who has not tried Knoppix. I has solved many problems for me. Runs on junk laptops which do not have a
hard drive. Great for keeping files private. Kids have their own jump drives and their own game collection.
Try it, you'll love it!

Installation from a DVD based 8.1 to a 16G USB appeared to install, but failed to boot. 7.7.1 USB boots on same machine.
LXTerminal is different from previous versions, has a small default size, which can be widened with a mouse but not deepened. To have more lines, change the default size but still cannot change depth with a mouse. Unnecessarily limiting. Even Microsoft command window allows depth change at any time without editing preferences.
Cannot make directories in /ramdisk, "Permission denied".
Knoppix has been very good in the past, but while 8.1 includes new fancy bells, there is a need for an 8.2 which will still do basic routine actions properly as earlier versions did.

My daily workhorse while diagnosing, repairing and installing laptops. Starts on nearly every hardware, UEFI and LEGACY, 32 or 64 bits. As far as I'm aware, KNOPPIX pioneered the Live CD way back in my early days of Linux, then used in MEPIS before becoming standard.
About as close to a 'just works' distro you can get. Perfect for installing on a thumb-drive complete with encryption and persistence.
Fully featured and fast.

While most "live medium" Linux distributions are lightweight daypacks, KNOPPIX is a full frame backpack. It's heavier, but it's still very portable, and it's got everything you expect you may need. This is both a full toolkit for troubleshooting, and a portable desktop, with more applications installed than I usually put on a permanent desktop installation, while maintaining good organization. And, its boot prompt options allow for an amazing degree of flexibility: you can choose 32- or 64-bit kernels, you can forego a GUI or choose between several desktop environments, and you can specify all sorts of options to get the thing to boot despite odd hardware limitations.
The full "DVD version" includes a tool to burn itself to a USB stick, and can use extra space as an encrypted overlay partition. An 8 GB USB stick, which is on the small side now, will have several gigabytes free for that purpose. This allows for considerable customization. (Curiously, the trend in "live medium" images is towards ISO hybrid images, which are easy to burn to a USB stick, but use up the whole stick and lack the option for an overlay).
One peculiarity is that, if you use the encrypted overlay, during the boot process, it will pause and wait for you to enter your passphrase -- but there's no prompt, so it looks like the thing's just locked up. You just have to type it in blind when the boot process pauses.

Knoppix is my Swiss Army Knife going back a very long way, this diagnostic lappy is an old Dell Inspiron 1300 has it installed as an OS, its great for all kinds of things as well safe as it starts Virgin each time. I constantly find new uses for Knoppix!
It would be interesting to be able to add or delete applications, newer versions of apps and then save as an IOS so everything is locked from bootup. I also found with this present version I could not access WPA wifi sites (only WEP), might have been rectified in the newer version?
Another interesting concept might be the ability to hook up a Knoppix box to another box for diagnostic purposes. This relates to another box with hardware, software or malware issues with the ability to overview the operation and generate reports,
Thank you Knoppix......

Hi Klaus,
I have many different versions of Knoppix doing useful work.
I rate it 10+++++.
The oldest is 3.4. I have quite a few systems using 3.6.
One server uses 6.4.3.
This box is running 7.2 from a SD USB 2.0. It is fast and very nice to use. And it is easy to change versions.
A bitcoin box uses 7.6.
VERY IMPRESSIVE!!
I would ADD ONE FEATURE -- Clone = Makes a running copy of the current version with programs and data included on a different memory device so I can easily make a known good backup . Including a way to just verify that the backup is correct. I have had some copy problems where not all files worked once copied and in other cases 'copied' files were missing. 7.2 for instance is missing some CUPS filters??
For some reason dd doesn't copy from SDUSB 2.0 to another like device or copy from SD.bin [whole SD image copy] to an SDUSB 2.0 device?
I suspect some sort of USB problem. Maybe just not enough clock edges to the SD during a dd copy operation?
warm regards,
John

Really lightweight, stable and customizable but ANNOYINGLY bloated at first boot. All I'd want is office app, Web browsers and some basic computer applications but this is so bad that you have to SCROLL DOWN to see all of the apps it comes with.

Been with KNOPPIX for 12 years now, its never let me down.
Navigating through files, opening applications and launching web pages is blazingly fast. (due to me using Openbox and it being run on ram). With 2GB of ram and a very lightweight DE it's just perfect. It's Debian+.
When I first started using it I got the hang of it within half a year, don't be scared off if you're a new user, it's very user friendly. But like all operating systems, it'll take well over a year to be a master at them.
KNOPPIX may have fallen in popularity, but it has risen in amazement. Now get off Virtual Box and install this bad boy!

Excellent CDrom and DVDrom used during work for rescue of various machines, cloning drives, and doesn't affect the drives worked-on if you need to fix or copy stuff. Mostly rescuing Windows machines, but also occasional sprinkling of Linux machines too. Recent interest in UEFI bootup also brought this distro to the forefront. We use a few versions, but latest version at moment is 7.6. If limited to CDrom, we will use an older version.
Recommended distro for anyone who needs a live distro.

Because I needed light distro I could not use DVD version of current KNOPPIX, which is above 4GB. So, I stayed with older KNOPPIX CD version 7.2.0 from 2013, which still runs great on USB stick with my old hardware. I wish Mr Knopper still supported CD version same way like live DVD. Updating packages for KNOPPIX live CD version and keeping it up to date can be tedious and time consuming.
There is planty of old hardware out there and current KNOPPIX live CD would be perfect for it. Great distro anyway.
Please create current version of KNOPPIX Live CD.

KNOPPIX was a great distro not to many years ago, it is still okay. It runs on almost anything you put it on---- really really nice to run from a thumb drive. I used it all the time until i found MX15 with the XFCE desktop. KNOPPIX comes with GNOME,KDE,and LXDE , all of which don't give me a good user feeling. I would give KNOPPIX a 10 if it came with XFCE i think. Klaus Knopper's work on software for blind people should make him a world hero!! If someday I find that there is an easy way to put XFCE on to the desktop choice list I'll likely go back to KNOPPIX. When KDE became fat and nasty, that's when I started to look for another distro.
