What is a distro or distribution?
The Linux kernel is freely available for anyone to use, share, or modify. This has made it extremely popular with software developers, software vendors, and computer enthusiasts. This has resulted in many operating systems being created with the Linux kernel at their core.
In fact, there is a whole family of Linux-based operating systems in the world. These operating systems are referred to as "Linux distributions" or "Linux distros". A Linux distribution is any operating system which uses Linux as its kernel.
The Linux kernel on its own just talks to the computer's hardware and makes applications run on the hardware. It doesn't do anything visible like play games, help you edit documents, or browse the web. For this you need additional software, called applications. (On phones and tablets, "applications" is typically shorted to "apps".)
While every distribution runs the Linux kernel at its core, each distribution ships with its own set of applications. Some Linux distributions are focused on office work, others on providing educational tools, some run background tasks, and others are focused on gaming. Each distribution has its own style, its own applications, and its own strengths.
