SteamOS, an Arch-based Linux distribution developed by Valve Corporation, has been updated to version 3.8.10. The new release comes with an updated base system and a large number of improvements and bug fixes: "SteamOS 3.8.10 has just been released for all users with the following changes: updated Arch system base; initial support for upcoming Steam Machine hardware; added support for waking from sleep via connected Steam Controller; substantially improved speed of future OS updates on high-speed connections; improved support for screen casting in Game Mode (e.g. OBS/Discord); fixed dropdown menus not appearing in some games; fixed excessive trackpad sensitivity on certain early Steam Deck LCD models; improved support for games that attempt to open PDF files in external viewers; fixed an issue where video output could become frozen while using Remote Play; fixed a possible session crash when using Game Recording with certain 'Maximum video height' settings; fixed an issue affecting certain titles (such as 'SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide') where the game window could have an incorrect position; fixed closing certain titles (such as 'STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor and Starfield') resulting in a session crash...." | SteamOS is an Arch-based Linux distribution developed by Valve Corporation, a US video game developer, publisher and digital distribution company. It comes with Steam, Valve's own video game store, and it is the default Linux distribution for Valve's line of gaming hardware, including the Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Steam Frame. The distribution also supports some third-party handheld devices, such as Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally, but it can also be installed on standard personal computers. SteamOS uses the KDE Plasma desktop as its default user interface.

Development Release: SteamOS 2.0 Preview |

The developers of SteamOS, a Debian-based distribution for gamers, have released an early preview of what should eventually become SteamOS 2.0. Built on top of the new Debian GNU/Linux 8, the release is primarily designed for those users who would like to help with testing. From the release announcement: "Valve is pleased to announce the preview of the next SteamOS release, code-named "brewmaster" and based on the latest Debian 8.1 stable release. Please note that this is a very early preview release and we have done only limited hardware compatibility and functional testing. We are releasing this early to get feedback from the community. You should not install brewmaster on any machine containing data you are not prepared to lose completely. Although there are a lot of changes under the covers, the overall functionality and experience of brewmaster is the same as alchemist and most of the SteamOS FAQ applies to both releases." This is the same content that was pushed to alchemist_beta last week. Updated NVIDIA drivers to 343.22; updated AMD graphics driver to 14.9; Linux kernel rebased against 3.10.60; improved performance of timing system calls for 32-bit applications by backporting i386 VDSO changes from upstream kernel and adding eglibc support for them; fixed 'XCOM: Enemy Unknown' not focusing on startup. Valve has announced the availability of the much-awaited first public beta release of SteamOS, a Debian-based gaming distribution that includes the Steam client and some Steam games: "We've been hard at work to deliver on our promise of a new kind of living room entertainment environment - one that is accessible, powerful and open. In making the SteamOS Beta available to you, we're excited to take the next major step towards that goal." This early beta release is designed for developers and experienced Linux users; there is no easy-to-install ISO image - just a zipped file that needs to be decompressed onto a USB storage medium and a basic installer that will take over the computer's hard disk. SteamOS 1.0 is based on Debian GNU/Linux 7.0, but it ships with a newer kernel (3.10.11), proprietary graphics drivers (ATI 13.11 and NVIDIA 331.20), and a GNOME 3 desktop which must be manually enabled.
