Arne Exton has announced the availability of a new "PuppEX" release of Exton Linux. The project's newest PuppEX is based on the long-term supported Ubuntu 24.04 and uses a recent 6.16 Linux kernel. "This Puppy Linux derivative is made by me. It is built from Ubuntu 24.04 'Noble Numbat' packages and packages built from woof-CE Recipes. I've also compiled a brand new kernel, 6.16.9. This is possibly one of the best PuppEX builds I've ever made. Everything just works. I could run the system very well on all of my six different computers. Among them on a really old Acer Aspire 5102WLMi from 2006. Note: Ubuntu 24.04 will be supported until April 2029. Note also that you can use the apt command (apt update, apt upgrade, apt install MyUsefulPackage) and Synaptic for installing thousands of new Ubuntu packages in PuppEX Noble64. I've installed NVIDIA's proprietary driver 580.82.09. That's because I could not get X.Org to work on one of my computers with the new RTX 4060 NVIDIA card in any other way. The driver will be used if you have a relatively new NVIDIA card. If the card isn't automatically recognized after boot, you should run the 'xorgwizard' command. When choosing a card you should go for 'Auto'. After that restart X.Org and you will hopefully enter the desktop as root." Here is the full release announcement. Distribution Release: Exton Linux 260104 "ArchEX" |
Arne Exton has announced the release of a new version of the "ArchEX" line of Exton Linux. Based on Arch Linux, build 260104 comes with the MATE desktop environment and includes the Calamares system installer: "I've made a new extra version of ArchEX with the MATE desktop environment. This ArchEX version replaces version 240101, which had Pantheon as DE. At the moment (260104) Pantheon doesn't work in Arch Linux. After a full system upgrade, the Pantheon menu is gone and you can't get it back. This ArchEX version has Calamares installed. Using Calamares means that you can install ArchEX MATE in any language. Everything will then be in your chosen language when the installation has completed. ArchEX with MATE works very well when running live on my six computers. Calamares is now installed also in build 260104. When the boot process is ready you will end up at LightDM's login page. Log in to the MATE desktop as the ordinary user 'user' with password 'live' or as 'root' with password 'root'. ArchEX build 260104 is now also for UEFI computers; before you can run ArchEX live you don't have to go into BIOS and change boot mode to 'Legacy Support'." Distribution Release: Exton Linux 250707 "DebEX" |
Arne Exton has announced the release of a new "DebEX" edition of Exton Linux, based on the upcoming release of Debian 13. It uses the KDE Plasma 6.3.5 desktop and comes with the Calamares system installer: "I have made a new extra version of DebEX KDE Plasma live system, efi. It's a pure Debian Sid/Trixie (upcoming Debian 13) system. There are no Ubuntu or Kubuntu elements involved in DebEX. DebEX KDE Plasma Sid uses the KDE Plasma Desktop 6.3.5, the latest version, released 2025-05-06, as the desktop environment. Linux kernel 6.15.3 is used. All included packages have been updated to the latest version as of 2025-07-07. VirtualBox Guest Additions and VMware Tools are pre-installed, which means that you can run DebEX KDE in full screen. I've installed the full KDE Plasma desktop using the command 'sudo apt install task-kde-desktop'. In order to save space I have removed LibreOffice. I have added Calamares 3.3.14 installer framework. Now you can choose language when the installation starts. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware on non-efi computers without problems. You can also use the Refracta installer." Distribution Release: Exton Linux 250621 "OpSuS" |
Arne Exton has announced the availability of a new "OpSuS" edition of Exton Linux. Based on openSUSE Tumbleweed, it uses the lightweight LXQt desktop environment, which means that it can be run smoothly even on fairly old computers: "I've made a new version of EXTON OpSuS with LXQt 2.2.0 as the only desktop environment. The ISO image is therefore rather small (1,850MB), which means that you can run the system from RAM really fast even if you have only 4GB RAM. This new EXTON OpSuS build is made from 'scratch', following the 'openSUSE:Expert Installation' Wiki. Linux kernel 6.14.6 is used when running EXTON OpSuS live. When running the system from hard drive you can use openSUSE's original kernel, right now it is version 6.15.2. When the boot process is ready, you will end up at LightDM's login screen. You can log in to the LXQt desktop as user with password 'live' or as root with password 'root'. Version 250621 of EXTON OpSuS can run on really old computers. As an example I could run it on my 17-year old Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi laptop." Read the release announcement for further information. This variant of Exton Linux is available for download from SourceForge: exton-opsus-64bit-lxqt-refractasnapshot-1850mb-250621.iso (1,904MB, MD5, pkglist). |

secureblue
secureblue is an immutable, security-focused desktop and server Linux operating system based on Fedora Atomic Desktop's base images - Silverblue, Kinoite and Sway Atomic. The project's goal is to build a maximally secure Linux operating system by proactively increasing defenses against the exploitation of both known and unknown vulnerabilities, while avoiding sacrificing usability for most use cases. Some of the security hardening features include a global hardened memory allocator developed by GrapheneOS, a security-focused Chromium-based browser called Trivalent, and Linux kernel hardening via sysctl and kernel arguments.
