A new release of CachyOS, a highly-optimised, Arch Linux-based distribution with KDE Plasma as the preferred desktop in live mode, is now available for download. The 250713 version enables users to choose a preferred shell at installation time and defaults to the Wayland display server for new Plasma installations. "This is our fifth release this year, and it includes a long-awaited requested feature, improvements for chwd, and more. The user's shell can now be chosen at installation time. In the package list selection, there is now an option to choose between cachyos-fish-config and cachyos-zsh-config. If neither is selected, the system will default to Bash. The default configuration will still be Fish, as it was before. We received some reports that systemd-oomd was killing processes too early in some cases. We have removed its integration to avoid these issues. For Plasma installations, we are now defaulting to Wayland. For graphics configurations that do not support Wayland (e.g., NVIDIA legacy drivers), the plasma-x11-session will be automatically installed to prevent issues. Additionally, fwupd has been added to the Plasma and GNOME environments." Continue to the release announcement for further details. Distribution Release: CachyOS 260124 |
The CachyOS team has announced the release of an updated ISO image of CachyOS, a Arch-based Linux distribution with the latest KDE Plasma as the chosen desktop on the live image. The new version 260114 comes with a reworked system installer, new Plasma login manager, and Wayland as the preferred display server: "This is our first release of the year, bringing a host of improvements to the installer, the new display manager (Plasma Login Manager), and much more. First, we have significantly reworked the installer and added many quality-of-life improvements. The bootloader selection has been moved directly into the installer, featuring a description for each option; Limine is now selected as the default bootloader. Architecture detection now happens at the very beginning of the installation process, which reduces the download size by around 1 Gigabyte. Additionally, we now pass the --needed flag to pacman to avoid reinstalling up-to-date packages. The mount options for NVMes have also been improved when Btrfs is selected, now defaulting to compression level 1. Next, the ISO has been switched to Plasma Login Manager, and the Live ISO now uses Wayland instead of X11." Read the rest of the release announcement for further information. Distribution Release: CachyOS 251129 |
The CachyOS project, which develops a highly-optimised, Arch Linux-based distribution with the latest KDE Plasma as the default live desktop, has updated its ISO image to version 251129: "This is our seventh release this year, bringing better accessibility, changes to mkinitcpio, and more. First, we are pleased to bring Orca and espeak-ng to the ISO image and installer. This adds crucial support for users with visual impairments, helping them navigate the CachyOS installation process. Next, we have enabled the mkinitcpio 'systemd' hook for supported configurations. Since ZFS and Bcachefs do not currently support this hook, it is automatically disabled if either is selected as the root filesystem. Additionally, we are now installing bcachefs-dkms, which replaces the default kernel module to provide better integration for Bcachefs users. We have prepared the installer to support Plasma Login Manager and Cosmic Greeter. While we plan to use Plasma Login Manager as a replacement for SDDM in the future, we are holding it back for now as it currently lacks integration with KDE Settings. However, Cosmic Greeter is now used for COSMIC installations, providing a smoother experience with the COSMIC desktop." See the release announcement for more details. Distribution Release: CachyOS 250824 |
The CachyOS team has announced the release of the distribution's August snapshot. The new release adds an option to install the Niri window manager and automated Btrfs boot environments. "The installation medium (ISO) now also uses the LTS kernel instead of the latest stable kernel, since the ISO needs to boot reliably without graphics-related issues. Using the LTS kernel could cause future compatibility gaps - for example, when new AMD or Intel GPUs require a newer kernel. If needed, we'll consider bundling a second kernel in the ISO to ensure users with the latest hardware can boot and install smoothly. We've added a new desktop option to the online installer: Niri WM. We maintain a small set of dotfiles to provide a good out-of-the-box experience. Choosing the GRUB bootloader with Btrfs as the filesystem will now automatically enable bootable snapshots, matching the behavior we already provide with Limine. This improves user experience and stability in case a package update doesn't play nicely with your hardware." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: CachyOS 250330 |
CachyOS is a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux which focuses on speed and security optimisations. The project's latest snapshot introduces a new boot loader, re-adds NVIDIA firmware, and automates configuring Samba shares. "The first major change is that we have added a new Bootloader. Limine is a great bootloader, which can be used for BIOS and UEFI. Limine also supports some theming like GRUB. We have also added direct Btrfs snapshot support, like it works with 'grub-btrfs'. This has been greatly tested from our side and works well. The snapshots will be enabled out of the box for all installations which are using Btrfs as a filesystem. We have added a package, called 'cachyos-samba-settings', which configures and sets up Samba support. This has been requested by our users. After discussions with NVIDIA, we have re-enabled the GSP Firmware for the closed-source kernel module. The GSP Firmware had a bunch of improvements in recent releases, and most drawbacks seem to be solved now." Additional details can be found in the release announcement. Distribution Release: CachyOS 241221 |
CachyOS is a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux. It focuses on speed and security optimisations. The project's latest release focuses on performance and Bluetooth support: "One of the most notable changes is that the default kernel is now optimized using AutoFDO. Profiling workloads are run through a diverse set of tests, including sysbench, CachyOS Benchmarker, Git operations, kernel compilation, and several miscellaneous benchmarks. Currently, the profiling is done on a Zen5 machine, but in the future, we plan to support merging multiple profiles for even broader optimization. RustiCL has replaced the default OpenCL driver in the Mesa stack, bringing improved performance and compatibility. Additionally, we now use scx_loader for sched-ext scheduler management in the kernel-manager. This allows for more seamless switching between schedulers and ensures they are properly configured using a dedicated configuration file. We've also enabled Bluetooth support, enhancing the user experience for most users." The project's release announcement offers further details. Distribution Release: CachyOS 241110 |
CachyOS is a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux. It focuses on speed and security optimisations. The project's latest snapshot is CachyOS 241110 which introduces several kernel and firmware updates which should improve gaming performance. "We have backported from the 6.13 Kernel the THP Shrinker, which allows splitting hugepages earlier, reducing memory usage when transparent_hugepages is set to 'always', while maintaining the same performance. Also, we have added the AMD Cache Optimizer, which can be modified at runtime to the preferred mode - cache or frequency. This changes the AMD preferred core ranking. This should help in games using the wrong CCD, for example. You can find instructions in the wiki on how to use this. Additionally, we have backported the AMD-pstate performance fixes for Strix Point laptops. This should generally improve the performance of these laptops." Additional details can be found in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: CachyOS 240313 |
CachyOS, a user-friendly and highly-optimised Linux distribution based on Arch Linux, has received a significant update. Its version 240313 features the brand-new KDE Plasma 6 desktop with Qt 6 and the Wayland display server by default: "This is our third release in 2024 and brings quite big changes. We are dropping our GNOME ISO image due to a lack of maintenance and double testing for every release. Also, this should avoid confusion among users about the net-installation, and supported desktop environments, since we are providing most desktop environments directly in the netinstall. This ISO image is based on Plasma 6 and will also have Wayland enabled by default. This should not have a big impact on NVIDIA users since X11 can still be used after the installation. Plasma 6 seems Wayland-wise in really good shape and as soon wayland-protocols and NVIDIA provide the explicit sync protocol, this should also be the case for most NVIDIA users. Features: Plasma 6 is now shipped in the ISO image and uses Wayland as default, GNOME ISO image got dropped to avoid confusion about netinstall; Calamares - rebased for Qt 6; refind - add f2fs and zfs as option including luks2 encryption...."
