postmarketOS is an Alpine-based Linux distribution for mobile devices. The project's latest release, version 24.12, introduces some key changes, specifically functioning cameras on Android phones. "One thing that people have been asking us over and over is, will it be possible to use cameras with postmarketOS on Androids? While of course we all would like to see that, this is a significant challenge for postmarketOS and other Linux Mobile projects that prefer using the mainline Linux kernel and don't use the proprietary Android userspace blobs for interacting with cameras. But as you can guess from the headline, there has been a significant breakthrough: the Pixel 3A and Fairphone 5 both have front and a rear camera working now, and somebody even reported being able to record video on the FP5. One of the two rear cameras of the Pocophone F1 also works now. As you would expect, this is not on-par with Android's implementation yet and some of the media has a bit of a retro appeal at the moment. Nevertheless, this is a major achievement! Thanks to Robert, Richard, Luca, Joel, Alistair as well as the libcamera and Megapixels folks!" Additional details and changes can be found in the project's release announcement. A list of supported devices and install options are provided. |

Distribution Release: postmarketOS 24.06 |
postmarketOS is an Alpine-based Linux distribution for mobile devices. The project's latest version is postmarketOS 24.06 which is based on Alpine Linux 3.20. "As always we target the most recent Alpine release. In case of v24.06 it is the excellent Alpine Linux 3.20. User Interfaces (UIs): GNOME Shell on Mobile 46_git20240610 replaces 45_git20230908 from v23.12. This version allows triggering the keyboard with double-tap on the bottom bar, and it has a new scheduling manager that improves UI smoothness. Thanks to @verdre, @azisu and all the GNOME contributors! KDE Plasma Mobile 6.0.5 replaces version 5.27.10 from v23.12. After nearly 10 years since the first release of Plasma 5, the KDE MegaRelease 6 brings a huge number of improvements across the whole stack. Among other things, the homescreen has been rewritten for Plasma Mobile 6 and now allows users to customize pages with apps, folders and widgets, as well as using an app drawer and search. There is also a new welcome screen on first launch for setting up Wi-Fi, timezones, etc. Thanks to @EspiDev and all the KDE contributors! Phosh 0.39 replaces version 0.33 from v23.12. Some of the highlights are folders in the app overview, better handling of devices with notches, selecting Wi-Fi networks via the quick settings and opening the on-screen keyboard via a long press on the bottom bar. Thanks to @agx and all the Phosh contributors!" Additional details and a list of supported devices can be found in the project's release announcement. Download options and install instructions for supported devices can be found on the postmaretOS download page. |

Distribution Release: postmarketOS 23.12 |
postmarketOS is an Alpine-based Linux distribution for mobile devices. The project offers four user interfaces (GNOME, Plasma, Phosh, and Sxmo) across 45 supported devices. postmarketOS 23.12 introduces support for 14 new devices (up from 31 in the middle of 2023) and introduces a number of useful updates: "Unlocking of encrypted installations is now done with unl0kr by default, the successor to osk-sdl. The default USB networking gadget was changed from RNDIS to NCM. The default image viewer in Phosh and GNOME is now Loupe, instead of previously Eye of GNOME (EoG). The release upgrade process has been made more robust. There are additional safety checks for a too small boot partition and for having hardcoded versions or packages installed via mrtest. Additionally a bug was fixed that caused Alpine mirrors without /alpine/ in the URL to not get properly replaced during the upgrade." Additional details and a list of known issues can be found in the project's release announcement. A list of supported devices is included in the project's wiki and install options can be found on the project's download page. |

Distribution Release: postmarketOS 22.12 |
postmarketOS is an Alpine-based Linux distribution for mobile devices. The project's latest release is postmarketOS 22.12 which includes upgrades for the mobile operating system's three user interfaces: Sxmo, Phosh, and Plasma Mobile. "Sxmo 1.12.0 replaces version 1.9.0 from v22.06. This version and previous release Sxmo 1.11.0 introduced quite a few improvements for deviceprofiles and explicit support for the OnePlus 6/6T, Pocophone F1, Samsung Galaxy S III, Samsung Galaxy Tab A 9.7 (2015) and Xiamo Redmi 2. There's other cool changes too, read the original announcement posts for more information. Originally it was planned to do a Sxmo 1.10.0 release specifically for v22.06 SP3, but that version was skipped and now you're just getting all of the great improvements at once. Phosh 0.22 brings another style refresh and 10% steps for the battery info icon, as well as actions for notifications on screen. Previously we had 0.21 in v22.06 SP2. Additionally we changed the default text editor from gedit to gnome-text-editor for new installs, and ship phosh-mobile-settings. If that is too many settings apps for your taste, we hear you and have been brainstorming on how to consolidate them." These and other changes are discussed in the project's release announcement. A list of supported devices and download options can be found on the postmarketOS download page. |

Distribution Release: postmarketOS 22.06 |
postmarketOS is an Alpine-based Linux distribution for mobile devices. The project offers three mobile interfaces: Phosh, Plasma Mobile, and Simple Mobile X Interface (Sxmo). The project's latest release is version 22.06 which includes a handy upgrade feature. "First of all, we are happy to announce that one can now upgrade from one release to the next one. We made it work for Sxmo, Phosh and Plasma Mobile. A script that runs every night ensures that this doesn't break for v21.12 -> v22.06 (and v22.06 -> edge to prepare for the next release). While we don't officially support it, the script even allows switching between all possible versions. Say from postmarketOS edge to v22.06 if you are tired of living on the edge. Thanks to Alpine's package manager apk it works fast and reliable. For now this is CLI based, in the future it should be possible to hook this up to graphical apps like GNOME Software and KDE Discover. More on upgrading in the wiki." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement. A list of supported devices and download options can be found on the project's download page. |
