RancherOS
RancherOS was a tiny Linux distribution that runs the entire operating system as Docker containers. This includes system services, such as udev and rsyslog. RancherOS includes only the bare minimum amount of software needed to run Docker. This keeps the binary download of RancherOS very small. Everything else can be pulled in dynamically through Docker.

Rocky Linux 9.1, a distribution built from the source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.1 and 100% compatible with its parent, has been released: "We are pleased to announce the general availability of Rocky Linux 9.1. This release is currently available for the x86-64, aarch64, ppc64le and s390x architectures. Rocky Linux 9.1 was subjected to over 9 days of testing before receiving the team’s approval. Notable changes: Keylime, a remote boot attestation and runtime integrity management solution using Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs) is now available; new module stream versions include Node.js 18, PHP 8.1, Maven 3.8 and Ruby 3.1; new compiler toolset versions include GCC 12, LLVM 14.0.6, Rust 1.62 and Go 1.18. Container images are now available for all x86-64, aarch64, ppc64le and s390x. Vagrant images are now available for x86-64 and aarch64. "From Rocky Linux 9.4 forward, you can specify arbitrary custom mount points except for specific paths that are reserved for the operating system. Creation of different partitioning modes is now available including auto-lvm, lvm, and raw. Customize tailor options for a profile and add it to your blueprint customizations by using selected and unselected options to add and remove rules. Security: Listed below are security-related highlights in the latest Rocky Linux 9.4 release. For a complete list of security-related changes, see the upstream link. SELinux userspace release 3.6 introduces deny rules for further customizing policies. Keylime server components, the verifier and registrar, are available as Containers. Rsyslog processing system introduces customizable TLS/SSL encryption settings and additional options that relate to capability dropping. OpenSSL TLS toolkit adds a drop-in directory for provider-specific configuration files. libkcapi 1.4.0 introduces new tools and options. Notably, with the new -T option, you can specify target file names in hash-sum calculations. stunnel 5.7.1 TLS/SSL tunneling service changes the behavior of OpenSSL 1.1 and later versions in FIPS mode. Louis Abel has announced the release of Rocky Linux 9.3, the latest stable version from a project that develops a community clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux: "We are pleased to announce the general availability of Rocky Linux 9.3. This release is currently available for the x86-64, aarch64, ppc64le and s390x architectures. The 9.3 release brings back cloud and container images for ppc64le that were not released with 9.2 due to issues with QEMU. These images may be divergent from the other architecture's images in some small ways, but we will work to reduce this delta in future releases of the images. The kernel-rt package has been merged into a subpackage of kernel. A new kernel-uki package was introduced as a technology preview, providing a Unified Kernel Image variant for booting. This UKI image is signed with its own SecureBoot key. A java-21-openjdk package was introduced providing a new version of Java. The new release offers GNOME 40, the ability to run different applications on different video cards, and filesystem improvements to reduce latency. "Rocky Linux 9 ships with GNOME 40 as the default desktop environment. Redesigned core apps, settings, and UI make it easier than ever to use Rocky Linux as a desktop operating system. The Activities look and feel provides a better experience when working, launching applications and arranging your personal workspace. Other notable improvements for desktop usage include: Software can be run on a separate graphics card by right-clicking and selecting the appropriate option; the ability to mute notifications by selecting Do not disturb, which will appear as a separate button in the notification; each screen can use a different refresh rate; the Activities program allows you to group application icons into folders using a drag-and-drop method; fractional display scaling." Rocky Linux is a clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, built from the upstream project's source code. The Rocky Linux team have launched version 8.5 of their operating system. One of the major changes in this release is the debut support for Secure Boot. "In less then 48 hours from RHEL-8.5 being released, we had successful tests on our ISOs and just before we were about to pull the string to go GA with 8.5, Microsoft countersigned our Secure Boot shim. We quickly deliberated and decided to backtrack and incorporate that into the 8.5 release. There were some things that we had to get in order and resolved, but it is with great pleasure that this release includes the official Rocky Linux signed shim. As with any security related diligence, it is important to be able to validate the Secure Boot shim is exactly what you expect and that it is properly activated."
