Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2024.3 |
Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution with a collection of security and forensics tools. Version 2024.3 of the distribution offers support for Qualcomm Snapdragon SDM845 SoC and includes eleven new tools. This distribution also begins the work on migrating to a new, significant Python update. "The summary of the changelog since the 2024.2 release from June is: Qualcomm NetHunter Pro Devices - Qualcomm Snapdragon SDM845 SoC now supported; new Tools - 11x new tools in your arsenal. Our focus has been on a lot of behind the scenes updates and optimizations since the last release. There have been some messy migrations, with multiple stacks, all interrelating. After the t64 transition finished up, it was straight into multiple other transitions - GCC 14, glibc 2.40 and Python 3.12. This last one is the most significant. This new Python release removed some long-deprecated APIs, breaking a fair number of packages. We have been busy fixing it all, we are almost there, Python 3.12 will be the default in the next version of Kali, 2024.4." Additional information is provided in the release announcement. These updates enhance stability and include several minor bug fixes, ensuring better support for the latest desktop improvements. Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2023.3 |
Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution with a collection of security and forensics tools. The project's latest release is Kali Linux 2023.3. "Today we are delighted to introduce our latest release of Kali, 2023.3. This release blog post does not have the most features in it, as a lot of the changes have been behind-the-scenes, which brings a huge benefit to us and an indirect positive effect to you as end-users. It always goes without saying, but there are a number of new packages and tools as well as the standard updates. If you want to see what's new for yourself download or upgrade if you have an existing Kali Linux installation. The highlights of the changelog since the 2023.2 release from May: Internal Infrastructure - Major stack changes is under way; Kali Autopilot - The automation attack framework has had an major overhaul; New Tools - 9 new tools added this time round! With the release of Debian 12 which came out this summer, we took this opportunity to re-work, re-design, and re-architecture our infrastructure. It is as massive as it sounds, and should not be a surprise that its not yet complete! This is where a good amount of our focus has been for this release-cycle (and also the next one unfortunately)." Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2023.1 |
Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution with a collection of security and forensics tools. The project's latest release, Kali Linux 2023.1, introduces a few new features, including defensive (purple) tools and Python virtual environments. "There are times where apt may not work for you, such as if there is not yet a Debian package or what is in our network repository is outdated. Look, we get it. You may need the latest version of a Python library and thus pulling from Pip gives you what you are after. However, there are then repercussions of files getting added / updated / removed which either package manager is not aware of. Things may not break straight away, but they might. An example could be when either package manager has an update of the module, or you try and install a module using the other ecosystem. Enter venv (Virtual environment). This creates an area which is completely independent." Details on these and other changes can be found in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2020.2 |
Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution with a collection of security and forensics tools. The project's latest release makes it easier for users to access PowerShell, updates themes for KDE Plasma, and the size requirements for the distribution's ARM-build SD cards has been increased from 8GB to 16GB. "A while ago, we put PowerShell into Kali Linux's network repository. This means if you wanted PowerShell, you had to install the package as a one off by doing 'sudo apt install -y powershell'. We now have put PowerShell into one of our (primary) metapackages, kali-linux-large. This means, if you choose to install this metapackage during system setup, or once Kali is up and running (sudo apt install -y kali-linux-large), if PowerShell is compatible with your architecture, you can just jump straight into it (pwsh). PowerShell isn't in the default metapackage (that's kali-linux-default), but it is in the one that includes the default and many extras, and can be included during system setup." Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2020.1 |
Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution with a collection of security and forensics tools. The project has started off the 2020 year with a new release and a series of significant changes. The new version, 2020.1, of Kali Linux merges the various desktop editions into single download options and does away with running as the root user by default. "Throughout the history of Kali (and its predecessors BackTrack, WHAX, and Whoppix), the default credentials have been root/toor. This is no more. We are no longer using the superuser account, root, as default in Kali 2020.1. The default user account is now a standard, unprivileged, user. For more of the reasons behind this switch, please see our previous blog post. As you can imagine, this is a very large change, with years of history behind it. As a result, if you notice any issues with this, please do let us know on the bug tracker. So with this, should you use Kali as your daily driver, as the primary OS? It's up to you. There wasn't anything really stopping you before, we just don't encourage it. We still don't. But its a helping hand for the people who are familiar with Kali enough." Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2019.4 |
Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution that ships with a collection of security and forensics tools. The project's latest version is Kali Linux 2019.4. The new release features Btrfs support during setup, a new theme, and a "Kali Undercover" mode which makes the distribution's desktop resemble the Windows desktop. "With the change to the environment, we thought we would take a side step and do something fun. Thanks to Robert, who leads our penetration testing team, for suggesting a Kali theme that looks like Windows to the casual view, we have created the Kali Undercover theme. Say you are working in a public place, hacking away, and you might not want the distinctive Kali dragon for everyone to see and wonder what it is you are doing. So, we made a little script that will change your Kali theme to look like a default Windows installation. That way, you can work a bit more incognito. After you are done and in a more private place, run the script again and you switch back to your Kali theme." Additional details can be found in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2018.2 |
Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution with a collection of security, penetration testing and forensics tools. The project's latest release is Kali Linux 2018.2, which includes kernel updates and fixes for the Meltdown and Spectre CPU bugs. "This Kali release is the first to include the Linux 4.15 kernel, which includes the x86 and x64 fixes for the much-hyped Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities. It also includes much better support for AMD GPUs and support for AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization, which allows for encrypting virtual machine memory such that even the hypervisor can't access it. If you spend any significant amount of time writing exploits, you are undoubtedly familiar with the various Metasploit scripts that are available. You are likely also aware that all of these helpful scripts are tucked away and a little difficult to make use of. Fortunately, as of Metasploit Framework 4.16.34, you can now make use of all these scripts directly as we have included links to all of them in the PATH, each of them pre-pended with msf-." There have also been updates to the Bloodhound, Reaver, PixieWPS, Burp Suite and Hashcat packages. Further details can be found in the project's release announcement and in the Change Log. Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2018.1 |
Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution that includes a collection of security and forensics tools. The Kali developers have released a new version, Kali Linux 2018.1, which features an updated kernel and two new security features: "Kali Linux 2018.1 has a shiny new 4.14.12 kernel. New kernels always have a lot of new features and the 4.14 kernel is no exception, although two new features really stand out. AMD Secure Memory Encryption Support - Secure Memory Encryption is a feature that will be in newer AMD processors that enables automatic encryption and decryption of DRAM. The addition of this features means that systems will no longer (in theory) be vulnerable to cold-boot attacks because, even with physical access, the memory will be not be readable. Increased Memory Limits - Current (and older) 64-bit processors have a limit of 64 TB of physical address space and 256 TB of virtual address space (VAS), which was sufficient for more than a decade but with some server hardware shipping with 64 TB of memory, the limits have been reached. Fortunately, upcoming processors will enable 5-level paging, support for which is included in the 4.14 kernel." More details can be found in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2017.1 |
Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution which features several security and forensics tools. The project has adopted a rolling release approach to new versions. The new release, Kali Linux 2017.1, features drivers for RTL8812AU wireless chipsets, improved GPU support and there are now Azure and AWS images of Kali Linux for cloud instances. "Finally, it's here! We're happy to announce the availability of the Kali Linux 2017.1 rolling release, which brings with it a bunch of exciting updates and features. As with all new releases, you have the common denominator of updated packages, an updated kernel that provides more and better hardware support, as well as a slew of updated tools - but this release has a few more surprises up its sleeve. A while back, we received a feature request asking for the inclusion of drivers for RTL8812AU wireless chipsets. These drivers are not part of the standard Linux kernel, and have been modified to allow for injection. Why is this a big deal? This chipset supports 802.11 AC, making this one of the first drivers to bring injection-related wireless attacks to this standard." A summary of available features in version 2017.1 can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (SHA256): kali-linux-2017.1-amd64.iso (2,664MB, torrent, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2016.2 |
Kali Linux is a Debian Testing-based distribution which includes many forensic and data recovery tools. The distribution uses a rolling release model for updates with Kali Linux 2016.2 providing the most recent snapshot of packages. "During these past few months, we've been busy adding new relevant tools to Kali as well as fixing various bugs and implementing OS enhancements. For example, something as simple as adding HTTPS support in Busybox now allows us to preseed Kali installations securely over SSL. This is a quick and cool feature to speed up your installations and make them (almost) unattended, even if you don't have a custom built ISO. To set a preseed file during an install process, choose the 'install' option, then hit Tab and enter the preseed directive, together with a URL pointing to your actual preseed file." Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2016.1 |
Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution that ships with a collection of security and forensics utilities. The distribution recently shifted from issuing fixed releases to a rolling release model. The project has announced the launch of Kali Linux 2016.1, the first version of the distribution's new rolling release series. "Today marks an important milestone for us with the first public release of our Kali Linux rolling distribution. Kali switched to a rolling release model back when we hit version 2.0 (codename `sana'), however the rolling release was only available via an upgrade from 2.0 to kali-rolling for a select brave group. After five months of testing our rolling distribution (and its supporting infrastructure), we're confident in its reliability - giving our users the best of all worlds - the stability of Debian, together with the latest versions of the many outstanding penetration testing tools created and shared by the information security community." Distribution Release: Kali Linux 2.0 |
The developers of Kali Linux, a forensics and security distribution based on Debian, have released Kali Linux 2.0. One of the big changes in the latest version of Kali is that the distribution has shifted to a rolling release model. "One of the biggest moves we've taken to keep Kali 2.0 up-to-date in a global, continuous manner, is transforming Kali into a rolling distribution. What this means is that we are pulling our packages continuously from Debian Testing (after making sure that all packages are installable) -- essentially upgrading the Kali core system, while allowing us to take advantage of newer Debian packages as they roll out. This move is where our choice in Debian as a base system really pays off -- we get to enjoy the stability of Debian, while still remaining on the cutting edge." The new release of Kali Linux is available in 32-bit and 64-bit x86 builds as well ARM builds. Further information is available in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: Kali Linux 1.0.9 |
Mati Aharoni has announced the release of Kali Linux 1.0.9, a bug-fix update of the Debian-based distribution designed primarily for penetration testing and forensic analysis tasks: "Now that we have caught our breath after the Black Hat and DEF CON conferences, we have put aside some time to fix an annoying bug in our 1.0.8 ISO releases related to outdated firmware as well as regenerate fresh new ARM and VMware images (courtesy of Offensive Security) for our new 1.0.9 release. With this release come a few more updates worth mentioning. We are pleased to announce that we have updated our Raspberry Pi Kali image to support the new B+ model so that now it works out of the box. This single image now supports all Raspberry Pi models. We have also included two more images to our Kali ARM image collection for the Odroid U3 and Cubox-i ARM computers." Distribution Release: Kali Linux 1.0.8 |
Mati Aharoni has announced the release of Kali Linux 1.0.8, a minor update of the project's Debian-based distribution with specialist tools for penetration testing and forensic analysis: "The long awaited Kali Linux USB EFI boot support feature has been added to our binary ISO builds, which has prompted this early Kali Linux 1.0.8 release. This new feature simplifies getting Kali installed and running on more recent hardware which requires EFI as well as various Apple MacBook Air and Retina models. Besides the addition of EFI support, there is a whole array of tool updates and fixes that have accumulated over the past couple of months. As this new release focuses almost entirely on the EFI capable ISO image, Offensive Security won't be releasing additional ARM or VMWare images with 1.0.8. As usual, you don't need to re-download Kali if you've got it installed, and apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade should do the job." Auditor Security Linux is a KNOPPIX-based live CD with a large collection of security-related tools and utilities. Version 200605 was released today: "I am proud to announce the release of the new version of the Auditor Security Collection CD-ROM. We put in a lot of effort to bring it into that final look and feel as you can see in the Auditor development log. It seems to be the best version released ever. Not only because of its completeness, but also because it seems to be the most stable and bug-free version. You will see that in this version you have to choose between two different ISO versions. This has to be done because systems with an integrated Intel b/g chip based wireless card will not boot with the ipw2100 driver on the CD." Find more details in the release announcement and changelog. Download: auditor-200605-02-ipw2100.iso (635MB, MD5) or auditor-200605-02-no-ipw2100.iso (634MB, MD5).

Distribution Release: Auditor Security Linux 120305 |
Auditor Security Linux is a KANOTIX-based live CD with a collection of tools for system auditing and forensic analysis. A new version was announced today: "The new version is finished and distributed already on some of the usual mirrors. First of all, it is a major rewrite. Switched over to Kanotix which is much nicer than regular KNOPPIX. I guess most of you are interested in the new bluetooth and wireless stuff: for the bluetooth section, you have all the needed tools for a proof of all known bluetooth attacks; in the wireless section you will find new versions of Cowpatty, File2air and aireplay as well as Wellenreiter and Kismet; new card types are supported now and a lot of fine-tuning was done." You can find much more information in the release announcement and changelog. Download: auditor-120305-01.iso.zip (659MB).
