Minimal Linux Live
Minimal Linux Live is a tiny Linux distribution which is designed to be built from scratch using a collection of automated shell scripts. Minimal Linux Live offers a core environment with just the Linux kernel, GNU C library and Busybox userland utilities. This default build is just 7MB in size. Additional software can be included in the ISO image at build time using a well documented configuration file. Minimal Linux Live can be downloaded as a pre-built image, built from scratch or run in a web browser using a JavaScript emulator.

Ubuntu Studio is a community edition of Ubuntu which strives to provide useful tools for media creation. The project's latest release includes a new dark theme, rEFInd support, and offers three years of updates. "For this release, we have a neutral-toned dark theme by default. While we could have gone with the Breeze Dark color scheme since we dropped the Materia KDE widget and window theme (it was difficult to maintain and work with new Plasma features), we decided to develop our own based on GNOME's Adwaita Dark theme with a corresponding Light theme. This was to help with photography since a neutral tone is necessary as Breeze Dark has a more blueish hue, which can trick the eye into seeing photos as appearing warmer than they actually are. However, switching from the dark theme to the light theme is a breeze (pun somewhat intended). When opening the System Settings, one only has to look at the home screen to see how to do that. rEFInd is a bootloader for UEFI-based systems. Our settings which help to support the low-latency kernel help to create a menu entry to help apply those settings and keep the low-latency kernel as the default kernel detected by rEFInd. To keep it current, simply enter sudo dpkg-reconfigure ubuntustudio-lowlatency-settings in the command line after a kernel update." Additional details can be found in the release announcement. Distribution Release: Ubuntu Studio 24.10 |
The Ubuntu Studio project has announced the launch of Ubuntu Studio 24.10. The new release includes a Minimal install mode, a change in kernel configurations, and offers nine months of support. "We have now implemented minimal installations in the system installer. This will let you install a minimal desktop to get going and then install what you need via Ubuntu Studio Installer. This will make a faster installation process and lets you customize what you need for your personal Studio. Unfortunately, at least for the time being, we also had to get rid of the default shortcuts in the panel since it would cause an error when loading without the applications being installed. A solution for this is coming in 25.04. The generic Ubuntu kernel is now fully capable of low-latency workloads. As such, with this release, we have switched from the low-latency kernel to the generic kernel with the boot options to enable the low-latency configuration enabled by default." The new release updates the Plasma desktop to version 6 and includes PipeWire 1.2.4. Additional information is provided in release announcement and in the release notes. Distribution Release: Ubuntu Studio 24.04 |
Erich Eickmeyer has announced the release of Ubuntu Studio 24.04, a new version of this specialist Ubuntu variant preinstalled with a selection of the most common free multimedia applications available. The new release introduces Pipewire 1.0 as the default multimedia server. "The Ubuntu Studio team is pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu Studio 24.04 LTS, code-named 'Noble Numbat'. This marks Ubuntu Studio's 34th release. This release is a long-term support release and as such, it is supported for 3 years (36 months, until April 2027). In cooperation with the Ubuntu Desktop team, we have an all-new desktop installer. This installer uses the underlying code of the Ubuntu Server installer ('Subiquity') which has been in use for years, with a frontend coded in 'Flutter'. Be on the lookout for a special easter egg when the graphical environment for the installer first starts. For those of you who have been long-time users of Ubuntu Studio since our early days (even before Xfce), you will notice exactly what it is. Now for the big one: PipeWire is now mature and this release contains PipeWire 1.0. With PipeWire 1.0 comes the stability and compatibility you would expect from multimedia audio." Distribution Release: Ubuntu Studio 23.10 |
Ubuntu Studio is a multimedia-focused community edition of Ubuntu. The project's 23.10 release places a focus on improving PipeWire support and audio configuration. "PipeWire has gained numerous improvements, including fixes for prosumer and professional audio. The JACK compatibility now performs in real-time, and some FireWire features have now been implemented. We also include a new utility, called the Ubuntu Studio Audio Configuration utility, found in the Ubuntu Studio Information menu. This can be used to configure the default PipeWire Quantum value, Enable or Disable the PipeWire-JACK compatibility layer (handy for using JACK by itself), or switch to the classic PulseAudio-JACK setup that was the default prior to 23.04. QPrompt is a Qt-based teleprompter application now available in the repositories. While a snap version does exist and is installable from Discover, the version in the repositories is more up-to-date. Since Discover does not see the version in the repositories, it needs to be installed from the command line by issuing the following command: 'sudo apt install qprompt'." Distribution Release: Ubuntu Studio 23.04 |
Ubuntu Studio is a multimedia-focused commuity edition of Ubuntu. The project has published a new release, Ubuntu Studio 23.04, which offers nine months of support. The new version includes KDE Plasma 5.27 and the PipeWire audio server. The distribution also includes a new system installer: "Ubuntu Studio Installer has been completely rewritten from the ground-up and works better on high-DPI displays. It utilizes the Zenity GTK interface to give users a choice of package selection and is even capable of uninstalling entire groups of packages. Ubuntu Studio Installer can still be used to add or remove the Ubuntu Studio Backports PPA as well as switch between the new PipeWire configuration or the traditional PulseAudio/JACK configuration of past releases (which also installs Studio Controls). Wayland is available and installed by default to select upon login and test but is still unsupported. We have done this at the request of KDE so that it can gain more testing and bug reports. We have done our best to configure it with the default theming and to make sure it picks up your settings, but it is possible some things will be missed and not work quite right. However, it has undergone extensive real-world testing and works well on non-NVIDIA systems." Additional details are presented in the project's release announcement and in the release notes. Distribution Release: Ubuntu Studio 22.10 |
Ubuntu Studio, an official variant of Ubuntu that comes pre-installed with a selection of the most common free multimedia applications available, has been upgraded to version 22.10: "The Ubuntu Studio team is pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu Studio 22.10, code-named 'Kinetic Kudu'. This marks Ubuntu Studio's 32nd release. This release is a regular release and as such, it is supported for 9 months (until July 2023)." One of additions to this release is a new "feature uninstaller": "A new addition to the Ubuntu Studio Installer package is the Ubuntu Studio Feature Uninstaller which performs the reverse of the Ubuntu Studio Installer: removes groups of packages from the Ubuntu Studio installation as long as they aren't required by another group of packages. For example, if you have ubuntustudio-photography installed and ubuntustudio-graphics installed but wish to uninstall ubuntustudio-photography, you will still have gimp installed since it's part of the ubuntustudio-graphics metapackage. This method of uninstallation is safe and effective at making your digital studio yours." Read the detailed release announcement and release notes for more information. Distribution Release: Ubuntu Studio 21.10 |
Ubuntu Studio is a community edition of Ubuntu featuring the KDE Plasma desktop and focusing on audio and video production. The project's latest release is version 21.10 which will be supported for nine months. "The Ubuntu Studio team is pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu Studio 21.10, code-named 'Impish Indri'. This marks Ubuntu Studio's 30th release. This release is a regular release and as such, it is supported for nine months, until July 2022. Due to the change in desktop environment that started after the release of 20.04 LTS, direct upgrades from supported releases prior to 21.04 are not supported. This release includes Plasma 5.22.5, the full-featured desktop environment made by KDE. It uses the Materia theme and Papirus icons. Studio Controls has seen further development as its own independent project and has been updated to version 2.2.7. This version has an all-new layout and features, including JACK over network and MIDI over network. Ardour has been updated to version 6.9 and includes a ton of bug fixes and enhancements." Distribution Release: Ubuntu Studio 21.04 |
The Ubuntu Studio team have announced the release of version 21.04 of their multimedia-focused distribution. The project's latest release will be supported through to January 2022 and includes several updated utilities: "This release includes Plasma 5.21.4, the full-featured desktop environment made by KDE. It uses the Materia theme and the icons are Papirus icons. Studio Controls has seen further development as its own independent project and has been updated to version 2.1.4. Ardour 6.6+ (a future 6.7 snapshot). Ardour has been updated to version 6.6+, meaning this is a git snapshot of what will eventually be Ardour 6.7. This had to be done because Ardour 6.5 started to fail to build with a newer library introduced into the Ubuntu archives, and could only be resolved with this snapshot. We hope to have Ardour 6.7 in via official updates once released. Agordejo is new to Ubuntu Studio this release. It was brought-in for those unsatisfied with RaySession's audio session management but found New Session Manager's interface to be too old and clunky." Distribution Release: Ubuntu Studio 20.10 |
The Ubuntu Studio team have announced the release of Ubuntu Studio 20.10, an interim release which received nine months of support. This version makes a shift in desktop environments, migrating from Xfce to using KDE Plasma as the default user interface. "The biggest new feature is the switch of desktop environment to KDE Plasma. We believe this will provide a more cohesive and integrated experience for many of the applications that we include by default. We have previously outlined our reasoning for this switch as part of our 20.04 LTS release announcement. This release includes Plasma 5.19.5. If you would like a newer version, the Kubuntu Backports PPA may include a newer version of Plasma when ready. We are excited to be a part of the KDE community with this change, and have embraced the warm welcome we have received. You will notice that our theming and layout of Plasma looks very much like our Xfce theming. (Spoiler: it’s the same theme and layout!)" Further details can be found in the project's release announcement. Download: ubuntustudio-20.10-dvd-amd64.iso (3,650MB, SHA256, signature, torrent, pkglist). |
