The openSUSE team have announced the availability of a release candidate for openSUSE 15.3 "Leap". The project's new development snapshot includes KDE Plasma 5.18, GNOME 3.34, and Xfce 4.16. "Desktop environments for the release include KDE's Long-Term-Support version of Plasma 5.18, GNOME 3.34 and Xfce 4.16. Packages for artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are available for data scientists who use the release. A list of some of the packages in openSUSE Leap 15.3 can be found on the Wiki. Leap release manager Lubos Kocman recommends Beta and RC testers use the 'zypper dup' command in the terminal when upgrading to the General Availability (GA) once it's released." openSUSE 15.3 will offer 18 months of support once the stable version is released. Further information can be found in the project's release announcement. Development Release: openSUSE 15.5 Beta |
Douglas DeMaio has announced the availability of the beta release of openSUSE 15.5, a distribution also known as "Leap" and developed in parallel with SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE). The release is available for the x86_64, aarch64, PowerPC and s390x architectures. "Leap 15.5 reaches beta phase. The version will offer some newer software versions, but the release is not a feature release. Packages like a newer Mesa and having the OpenH264 repository enabled by default for all new Leap 15.5 installations is planned. Another new element for Leap 15.5 is a migration option. A new single-click migration streamlines a migration process that took three steps in previous openSUSE Leap releases. The users that want to migrate from previous releases or 15.5 alpha can install openSUSE-repos-Leap, which comes with the repo definition and it utilizes zypp services for repo management, although this feature is not enabled by default. However, a zypper-migration-plugin implementation as the main request on the Graphical User Interface has been fulfilled into a separate element related to SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 Service Pack 5." Distribution Release: openSUSE 15.4 |
The openSUSE team has announced the launch of openSUSE 15.4 Leap, the latest version of their distribution which shares a package base with SUSE Linux Enterprise. One of the points of focus for the new version is easier access to media codecs and hardware drivers. "This version of Leap simplifies multimedia codec installation. Progress has been made to bring Cisco's openh264 video codecs to users via a repository present by default on the system, which will come in a maintenance update. The release not only gains muiltimedia improvements; it gains open-source driver support. Besides AMD's and Intel's continual open-source Linux graphics drivers commitment, users of modern NVIDIA GPUs will benefit from it signing firmware images for the latest-generation GeForce 30 series GPUs." Development Release: openSUSE 15.4 RC |
The openSUSE project has published a release candidate for openSUSE 15.4. The new development snapshot offers users a chance to test openSUSE and introduces a new platform for containers and minimal environments: "The openSUSE project has entered the release candidate phase for the next minor release version of the openSUSE Leap distribution. The upcoming release of Leap 15.4 transitioned from its beta phase to'release candidate phase after Build 230.2 passed openQA quality assurance testing. 'Test results look pretty solid as you’d expect from RC,' wrote release manager Lubos Kocman in an email on the openSUSE Factory mailing list yesterday. 'My original ETA was Wednesday, but we managed to get (the) build finished and tested sooner.' The new phase also changes the new offering of Leap Micro, which is a modern lightweight operating system ideal for host-container and virtualized workloads, into its release candidate phase. The RC signals the package freeze for software that will make it into the distribution, which is used on servers, workstations, desktops and for virtualization and container use." Development Release: openSUSE 15.4 Beta |
The openSUSE team have announced the availability of new testing images for the upcoming openSUSE 15.4 release. The new beta snapshot introduces a number of new package updates, in particular in most of the desktop environments. "Unlike previous 15 series versions, Leap 15.4 will offer a refresh of more modern packages for the distribution. A variety of software packages will differ from those in openSUSE Leap 15.3, but some, like the Xfce 4.16 version, will remain the same as in the previous release. Versions of Qt 5, Plasma, GNOME, Enlightenment and many other packages will also have newer versions. The Leap 15.4 beta phase is expected to introduce a running version of Leap Micro 5.2, which is a new offering of a MicroOS for Leap. MicroOS is a variant of Tumbleweed. Leap Micro is a modern lightweight operating system that is immutable and ideal for host-container and virtualized workloads; it provides automated administration and patching. Leap Micro is well suited for decentralized computing environments and is a microservice distribution for developers, distributed computing projects and professionals." Additional information is presented in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: openSUSE 15.3 |
The openSUSE team have announced the release of a minor update to the project's 15.x branch. openSUSE 15.3 is assembled using the same binary packages as SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) which facilitates testing and migration across both platforms. "The newest minor version of openSUSE Leap is the most recent, rock-solid addition to the openSUSE 15.x series that carries all the positive attributes of its predecessors. There is one huge change from the previous Leap versions. openSUSE Leap 15.3 is built not just from SUSE Linux Enterprise source code like in previous versions, but built with the exact same binary packages, which strengthens the flow between Leap and SLE like a yin yang." The new release features a desktop upgrade, bumping Xfce from version 4.14 to 4.16. Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement and in the release notes. Development Release: openSUSE 15.3 Beta |
Douglas DeMaio has announced the availability of the beta build of openSUSE 15.3, an updated version of the popular distribution scheduled for a final release in early June: "openSUSE Leap has entered into the beta release phase today for its 15.3 minor version. This openSUSE Leap 15.3 version is a solidified release that focuses more on the building of the distribution rather than refreshing the distribution's packages, but there are some significant changes to the distribution. Many of the packages will remain the same as those in openSUSE Leap 15.2 with a bit of hardware enablement and security backports. An updated version of glibc brings some Power10 support and the Xfce desktop users will have the new 4.16 version. The distribution also gains s390x architecture. The biggest change for this release is how Leap is built and its relationship with SUSE Linux Enterprise." Continue to the release announcement for further details and relevant links. Development Release: openSUSE 15.3 Alpha |
The openSUSE team have published a new development snapshot of their upcoming openSUSE 15.3 release. The new Alpha snapshot introduces binary compatibility with SUSE Linux Enterprise and reorganizes the way installation media for different CPU architectures are made available. "You may notice that Installation images for all arches can be now found in the Installation tabs, and the tab Ports no longer exist. This new structure corresponds with the way how we build images in 15.3. openSUSE Leap 15.3 is based on the Jump concept that was developed over the past several months, which makes it and SUSE Linux Enterprise compatible. openSUSE Leap aligns with SLE and its Service Packs (SP), which keeps the system updated, stable and patched. Upon General Availability of this release, there will be a whole new level of harmony between Leap 15.3 and SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP3." Details on the new development snapshot can be found in the project's release announcement.
