SolydXK
SolydX and SolydK are Debian-based distributions with the Xfce and KDE desktops respectively. SolydXK aims to be simple to use, providing an environment that is both stable and secure. SolydXK is an open-source alternative for small businesses, non-profit organisations and home users. The project started as an unofficial variant of Linux Mint's "Debian" edition with KDE as the default desktop, but it was later given its own identity as SolydK. SolydX was added after Linux Mint dropped its Debian-based flavour that used the Xfce desktop.

The Ubuntu MATE team has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 20.10 which ships with the MATE 1.24.1 desktop. The new release offers nine months of support. "If you follow the Ubuntu MATE Twitter account you'll know that MATE Desktop 1.24.1 was recently released. Naturally Ubuntu MATE 20.10 features that maintenance release of MATE Desktop. In addition, we have prepared updated MATE Desktop 1.24.1 packages for Ubuntu MATE 20.04 that are currently in the SRU process. Given the number of MATE packages being updated in 20.04, it might take some time for all the updates to land, but we're hopeful that the fixes and improvements from MATE Desktop 1.24.1 will soon be available for those of you running 20.04 LTS. The Ubuntu Desktop team added the option to enroll your computer into an Active Directory domain during install. We've been tracking that work and the same capability is available in Ubuntu MATE too." Further information and screenshots can be found in the project's release announcement. About Ubuntu MATE
Ubuntu MATE is a desktop Linux distribution which aims to bring the simplicity and elegance of the Ubuntu operating system through a classic, traditional desktop environment - the MATE desktop. MATE is the continuation of the GNOME 2 desktop environment which was used as Ubuntu's default desktop until 10.10 (when it was replaced by Unity). The project began its life as an Ubuntu "remix", but starting with version 15.04, it was formally accepted as an official member of the Ubuntu family of Linux distributions.

Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 23.04 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 23.04. The project's new version is a gentle upgrade from the previous short-term support release and includes version 1.26.1 of the MATE desktop. "Ubuntu MATE 23.04 is the least exciting Ubuntu MATE release ever. The good news is, if you liked Ubuntu MATE 22.10 then it is more of the same; just with better artwork! I entered this development cycle full of energy and enthusiasm off the back of the Ubuntu Summit in Prague, but then I was seriously ill and had a long stay in hospital. I'm recovering well and should be 100% in a couple of months. This setback and also changing jobs a few months ago has meant that I've not been able to invest the usual time and effort into Ubuntu MATE. I'm happy to say that I've been able to deliver another solid release with the help of the Ubuntu community. What changed since the Ubuntu MATE 22.10? Both MATE Desktop and Ayatana Indicators have seen some version bumps that fix an assortment of minor bugs; Flatpak is no longer installed by default, but can still be installed should you want to use it...." This release also includes the PipeWire media stack installed by default and offers version 6.2 of the Linux kernel. The release announcement and release notes offer additional details. Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 22.10 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 22.10. This release reportly offers a number of small, polishing changes rather than a lot of large, technical adjustments. Some of the desktop tweaks include the following: "The usual point release updates to MATE desktop and Ayatana Indicators have been included that fix an assortment on minor bugs. The main change in MATE desktop is to MATE Panel, where we've included an early snapshot release of mate-panel 1.27.0 along with a patch set that adds centre alignment of panel applets. This much requested feature comes from Ubuntu MATE community contributor Gordon N. Squash and allows panel applets to be centre aligned, as well as the usual left and right alignment. I'm sure you'll all join me in thanking Gordon for working on this feature. Centre aligning of applet icons will ship with MATE Desktop 1.28, but we're including it early for Ubuntu MATE users. We've updated MATE Tweak to correctly save/restore custom layouts that use centre aligned applets and all the panel layouts shipped with Ubuntu MATE 22.10 have been updated so they're compatible with center alignment of applets." Further details can be found in the project's release announcement and in the release notes. Download: ubuntu-mate-22.10-desktop-amd64.iso (3,051MB, SHA256, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 22.04 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 22.04, a long-term support Ubuntu community edition. The new release ships with version 1.26.1 of the MATE desktop, offers an updated HUD, and refreshes the MATE Tweak tool. "MATE Tweak has refreshed its supported for 3rd party compositors. Support for Compton has been dropped, as it is no longer actively maintained and comprehensive support for picom has been added. picom has three compositor options: Xrender, GLX and Hybrid. All three are can be selected via MATE Tweak as the performance and compatibility of each varies depending on your hardware. Some people choose to use picom because they get better gaming performance or screen tearing is reduced. Some just like subtle animation effects picom adds. Recent versions of rofi, the tool used by MATE HUD to visualise menu searches, has a new theme system. MATE HUD has been updated to support this new theme engine and comes with two MATE specific themes (mate-hud and mate-hud-rounded) that automatically adapt to match the currently selected GTK theme." Development Release: Ubuntu MATE 22.04 Beta |
The Ubuntu community has published a new development release, leading into the distribution's 22.04 long-term support (LTS) scheduled for April. Along with the flagship Ubuntu Server distribution its many official community editions have also released beta snapshots. Perhaps the most documented community edition is Ubuntu MATE which offers pages of updates and screenshots of the beta. The release announcement mentions some important changes: "Ubuntu MATE, like its lead developer, was starting to get get a bit large around the mid section. During the development of 22.04, the image got to 4.1GB. So, we put Ubuntu MATE on a strict diet. We've removed the proprietary NVIDIA drivers from the local apt pool...." Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 21.10 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 21.10. The new version will receive nine months of support and features MATE 1.26.0 as the default desktop environment. "A significant effort has been invested in fixing bugs in MATE Desktop 1.26.0, optimising performance and plugging memory leaks. MATE Desktop is faster and leaner as a result and its underpinnings have been modernised and updated. This last point mostly benefits developers working on MATE, but is important to highlight to users at it demonstrates MATE Desktop is being maintained to ensure its longevity. Here are some of the other quality of life improvements in MATE Desktop 1.26: The Control Center features: Improved Window Preferences dialog with a more comprehensive window behaviour and placement options presented. Display preferences now has an option for discrete display scaling. Power Manager has a new option to enable keyboard dimming. Notifications now support for hyperlinks. Caja can format drives and has a new Bookmarks sidebar." Further details can be found in the release announcement and release notes. Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 21.04 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 21.04. The new version offers nine months of support and includes several visual changes. "The MATE Desktop team released maintenance updates for the current stable 1.24 release of MATE. We've updated the MATE packaging in Debian to incorporate all these bug fixes and translation updates and synced those packages to Ubuntu so they all feature in this 21.04 release. There are no new features, just fixes. Ayatana Indicators: A highlight of the Ubuntu MATE 20.10 release was the transition to Ayatana Indicators. You can read the 20.10 release notes to learn what Ayatana Indicators are and why this transition will be beneficial in the long term. We've added new versions of Ayatana Indicators including ‘Indicators' settings to the Control Center, which can be used to configure the installed indicators." Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 20.04 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 20.04. The new release, which will receive three years of support, ships with version 1.24 of the MATE desktop and introduces a firmware update tool called fwupd. "Those of you who follow the desktop Linux news will know that upstream MATE Desktop recently released version 1.24. Ubuntu MATE 20.04 is shipping with MATE Desktop 1.24. Thus, all of the improvements in MATE Desktop 1.24 are present in Ubuntu MATE 20.04 LTS. Since the last LTS we worked on the following: added multiple coloured theme variations as one-click installs for those of you who simply don't like Chelsea Cucumber; added experimental ZFS install option; added GameMode from Feral Interactive; fixed several crashers in Brisk Menu and added keyboard navigation; fixed panel layout switching which is now stable and reliable via MATE Tweak Tweak and Ubuntu MATE Welcome; fixed rendering window controls on HiDPI displays; fixed irregular icon sizes in MATE Control Center and made them render nicely on HiDPI displays." Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 19.10 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 19.10. The new version provides nine months of support and addresses a number of minor desktop bugs. "Upstream MATE Desktop recently released 1.22.2. All the updates are present in Ubuntu MATE 19.10 plus I've cherry picked a good deal of fixes from MATE Desktop development snapshots. In total, 67 additional patches have been applied to the MATE desktop packages in Ubuntu MATE 19.10 to fine tune this release prior to launch day. Included in those patches are fixes for locking the screen on resume from suspend, adding a Media Information extension to the file manager, performance improvements for the window manager and cycling external displays using Super + p. All this work has also been submitted to Debian. Since the final beta we worked on the following: added experimental ZFS install option; fixed rendering window controls on HiDPI displays; fixed irregular icon sizes in MATE Control Center and made them render nicely on HiDPI displays; fixed Caja extensions not loading." In addition, Thunderbird has been replaced by Evolution as the default e-mail client and GNOME MPV has replaced VLC. Both of the replaced applications are still available in the distribution's repositories. Further details can be found in the release announcement and in the release notes. Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 19.04 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the launch of Ubuntu MATE 19.04 which ships with version 1.20 of the MATE desktop and updated video drivers. "Ubuntu MATE 19.04 is shipping with MATE Desktop 1.20. Albeit, the latest maintenance release of MATE Desktop 1.20 with some of the bug fixes and new features from MATE Desktop 1.22 included. In fact, the version of MATE Desktop being shipped in 19.04 is derived from the same MATE packages that will feature in the upcoming Debian 10 (Buster) release. You may be wondering why we're not shipping MATE Desktop 1.22? The answer: stability. MATE Desktop 1.22 introduces some underlying API changes in core components and while all first party MATE Desktop applications are compatible with the changes and completely stable, some third party applications are not. Some third party applications are big crashers now and we've not been able to fix them in time. So, we are playing it safe and sticking with MATE Desktop 1.20 and working with upstreams so we can land MATE Desktop 1.22 early in the Ubuntu MATE 19.10 development cycle." Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 18.10 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 18.10. The new version ships with version 1.20.3 of the MATE desktop environment and will receive nine months of support. "Curiously, the work during this Ubuntu MATE 18.10 release has really been focused on what will become Ubuntu MATE 18.04.2. Let me explain. The upstream MATE Desktop team have been working on many bug fixes for MATE desktop 1.20.3, that has resulted in a lot of maintenance updates in the upstream releases of MATE desktop. The Debian packaging team for MATE Desktop, of which I am member, has been updating all the MATE packages to track these upstream bug fixes and new releases. Just about all MATE desktop packages and associated components, such as AppMenu and MATE Dock Applet have been updated. Now that all these fixes exist in the 18.10 release, we will start the process of SRU'ing (backporting) them to 18.04 so that they will feature in the Ubuntu MATE 18.04.2 release due in February 2019. The fixes should start landing in Ubuntu MATE 18.04 very soon, well before the February deadline. Ubuntu MATE 18.04.2 will include a hardware enablement stack (HWE) based on what is shipped in Ubuntu 18.10...." Additional information can be found in the distribution's release announcement. Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 18.04 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 18.04, the latest version of the popular Ubuntu variant featuring the MATE desktop environment. This new version comes with the new MATE 1.20.1: "The MATE Desktop has transitioned from the GTK+ 2.24-based MATE 1.12 to the very latest MATE 1.20.1 based on GTK+ 3.22. This migration has been several years in the making, and most of 2016 and 2017 was spent refining the GTK+ 3 implementation. The move to GTK+ 3 has made it possible to introduce many of the new features you'll read about below. Support for libinput has been added and is now the default input handler for mouse and touchpad, which has resulted in much improved responsiveness and support for multi-finger touch gestures. Thanks to our friends at Hypra.fr, accessibility support (particularly for visually impaired users) has seen continued development and improvement. MATE Desktop is proud to provide visually impaired users the most accessible open-source desktop environment. MATE Desktop 1.20 supports HiDPI displays and if you have one then Ubuntu MATE will automatically enable pixel scaling, presenting you with a super crisp desktop and applications." Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 17.10 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 17.10. The new version features a number of desktop changes, including a global menu bar placed at the top of the screen. The 17.10 release also features an improved Heads-Up Display (HUD) which makes it possible to search through application menus using only the keyboard. "This is something we started during Ubuntu MATE 16.10 and never perfected, but is now ready for prime time. A favourite of Unity 7 users is the Heads-Up Display (HUD) which provides a way to search for and run menu-bar commands without your fingers ever leaving the keyboard. So if you're trying to find that single filter in GIMP but can't remember which filter category it fits into or if you can't recall if preferences sits under File, Edit or Tools on your favourite browser, you can just search for it rather than hunting through the menus. Just like Global Menus the HUD is currently only available via the Contemporary, Cupertino and Mutiny [layouts]." Development Release: Ubuntu MATE 17.10 Alpha 2 |
Dustin Krysak has announced the availability of a new alpha release of Ubuntu's community editions. The new development snapshot, 17.10 alpha 2, presents users with early previews for Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Budgie and Ubuntu Kylin. "This milestone features images for Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, Ubuntu Budgie and Ubuntu Kylin. Pre-releases of the Artful Aardvark are not encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu flavour developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs as we work towards getting this release ready. Alpha 2 includes some software updates that are ready for wider testing, however, it is quite an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs." Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 17.04 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the launch of Ubuntu MATE 17.04. The new release, which features nine months of support, ships with MATE 1.18 as the default desktop environment. With this release, the distribution's MATE desktop has completed the transition from using GTK+ 2 libraries to GTK+ 3. "This is our favourite release of Ubuntu MATE so far and, we believe, a real return to form. Ubuntu MATE 16.10 was a transitional release, in every sense, and 17.04 concludes the upheaval of migrating to GTK+ 3. We’ve put a great deal of effort into refining Ubuntu MATE 17.04 in the following ways: the MATE team did an amazing job releasing MATE 1.18.0 which completes the transition to GTK+ 3, fixes countless bugs and introduces some much-needed new features and modernisations; Daniel Foré from elementary contributed new icons which deliver style and panache; Ikey Doherty from Solus created Brisk menu in collaboration with Ubuntu MATE; Dave from Linux & Other Stuff contributed a new dark theme called Ambiant-MATE Dark...." Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 16.10 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the launch of Ubuntu MATE 16.10. The new version of this official Ubuntu community edition offers a desktop environment and applications which have been ported to the GTK+ 3 toolkit, replacing GTK+ 2. "Ubuntu MATE 16.10 is, more or less, a re-working of Ubuntu MATE from scratch, not just to accommodate GTK+ 3 but to also make most of the packages shipped by default with Ubuntu MATE 'Recommended'. This means most default applications can now be uninstalled without issue. The work to port MATE Desktop to GTK+ 3 has been ongoing for a couple of years and Ubuntu MATE is the first major distribution to ship a full GTK+ 3 implementation of the MATE Desktop. And the absolute latest release too, MATE Desktop 1.16! Firefox and LibreOffice are also GTK+ 3 only in Yakkety. This has been no small undertaking, we've changed toolkits twice this cycle. First from GTK+ 2.24.x to GTK+ 3.18, and then again to GTK+ 3.20. The themes required two significant upgrades during this process." Development Release: Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Beta 1 |
The upcoming release of Ubuntu 16.10 is getting closer as the developers deliver the first beta build. Five of the official Ubuntu sub-projects participate in the testing - Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu MATE and Ubuntu Studio. Ubuntu MATE is the first with the release announcement: "We are underwhelmed to announce, quite possibly, our most uninteresting beta release ever. This beta release is all about the plumbing that transitions Ubuntu MATE to GTK+ 3.20. It really isn't very interesting from an end-users perspective. From this point forward we'll be focusing on fixing as many issues as we can on the lead up to beta 2 and the final release of Ubuntu MATE 16.10." Development Release: Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Alpha 1 |
Martin Wimpress has announced an early development snapshot for Ubuntu MATE. The new test release, Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Alpha 1, features a lot of changes to the default list of installed packages and features a MATE desktop built using GTK+ 3 libraries (past versions used GTK+ 2). The enthusiastic release announcement reads: "We're stoked to announce Ubuntu MATE 16.10 alpha 1, the first distro to ship a fair dinkum MATE desktop implementation built entirely against GTK+ 3. What changed since Ubuntu MATE 16.04 was released? GNOME Main Menu (as used in the openSUSE layout) has been dropped, no one in the MATE team believes this applet is good enough to port to GTK+ 3; the openSUSE layout is currently missing, but will be re-instated in MATE 1.16; the Mutiny layout is currently missing but will be re-instated...." Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 16.04 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the launch of Ubuntu MATE 16.04. The new version marks Ubuntu MATE's first long term support release and features an up to date MATE desktop environment as well as support for Ubuntu's Snappy command line package manager. "Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS has not just been in development for 6 months. Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS has been in development for nearly 2 years. Since the project started in June 2014 this release, this our first official LTS, is what we've been working towards. This was the goal we had firmly in our sights every step of the way. I extend my sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to Ubuntu MATE over the last 22 months. None of this would have been possible without the countless contributions from the amazing Ubuntu MATE community. I can't thank you all enough for what you've helped create. I only hope this release makes you all proud." A list of changes and known issues can be found in the distribution's release announcement. Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2, an updated build of the Ubuntu-based distribution featuring the MATE desktop environment. Although the DVD image name sports the LTS (long-term support) tag, this version of Ubuntu MATE is not an "official" Ubuntu flavour as the project was formally accepted as an Ubuntu family member just before the recent 15.04 beta 1 release. From the release announcement: "Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 is available for download. This release fixes a few issues that were present in 14.04.1, adds some new features and updates some packages. It is important to state clearly that Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 is not an official Ubuntu flavour! The upside of maintaining an unofficial Ubuntu derivative is that we can roll out new features and package updates. So we did, most notably LibreOffice 4.4.1. The advantage of the newer Linux kernel is that it resolves most of the screen tearing issues some people experienced in Ubuntu MATE 14.04.1."
