RUNT Linux
RUNT (ResNet USB Network Tester) was Slackware Linux designed to run from a 128MB USB pen drive. It consists of a boot floppy image and a zip file, similar to "zipslack". It was intended to be a fairly complete Linux installation for use as a testing tool capable of booting on any x86 computer with a USB port and a bootable floppy drive. The boot floppy was based on Slackware's bare kernel. It contains an initial ramdisk to load USB-storage related modules and it pauses for 5 seconds to allow the drive to initialize. The bootdisk also contains Memtest86, a very useful RAM testing tool, which can be started by typing memtest at the boot prompt. The zip file contains a UMSDOS filesystem designed to be extracted onto a 128MB pen drive with an MSDOS filesystem using 2K clusters.

BSD Release: OpenBSD 7.5 |
Theo de Raadt has announced the release of OpenBSD 7.5, the latest stable version of the free, multi-platform 4.4BSD-based UNIX-like operating system, in active development since 1996: "We are pleased to announce the official release of OpenBSD 7.5. This is our 56th release. We remain proud of OpenBSD's record of more than twenty years with only two remote holes in the default install. As in our previous releases, 7.5 provides significant improvements, including new features, in nearly all areas of the system: added bt(5) and btrace(8) support for binary modulo operator; added a TIMEOUT_MPSAFE flag to timeout(9); added IBM encoded version of the "Spleen 8x16" font, usable as console font; cleanup and machine-independent refactoring of three context switch paths outside of mi_switch(): when a process forks and the new proc needs to be scheduled by proc_trampoline, cpu_hatch: when booting APs, and sched_exit: when a proc exits; made vscsi(4) 'vscsi_filtops' mpsafe and extended the 'sc_state_mtx' mutex(9) to protect 'sc_klist' knotes list; made out-of-swap checking more robust, preventing potential deadlocks...." BSD Release: OpenBSD 7.4 |
The OpenBSD team have announced the release of OpenBSD 7.4, the latest version of the project's security-focused operating system. The new version includes a lot of virtual machine improvements, better SMP performance, wireless networking updates and an interesting random timing feature for the cron daemon. "In cron(8) and crontab(5), add support for random offsets when using ranges with a step value in cron. This extends the random range syntax to support step values. Instead of choosing a random number between the high and low values, the field is treated as a range with a random offset less than the step value. This can be used to avoid thundering herd problems where multiple machines contact a server all at the same time via cron jobs. Extend and improve the ibuf API in libutil and add functions for more specific data types, for modifying data at specific offsets, for getting and setting the file descriptor stored on the ibuf and for efficient wrapping of ibufs into imsgs. The ibuf API is mostly used in network daemons. In wsconsctl(8), add button mappings for two- and three-finger clicks on clickpads. In pax(1) and tar(1), do not open files that will be skipped, speeding up archive creation when many files are skipped." Additional details can be found in the release announcement. BSD Release: OpenBSD 7.1 |
The OpenBSD team have announced the release of OpenBSD 7.1, the latest version of this security-oriented operating system. The project has done a lot of work in the last six month, with efforts going into making OpenBSD compatible with Apple's M1 architecture. Improvements have also included wireless driver updates, fixes for tmux, and changes to how OpenSSH handles file transfers. "Near miss in sshd(8): fix an integer overflow in the user authentication path that, in conjunction with other logic errors, could have yielded unauthenticated access under difficult to exploit conditions. This situation is not exploitable because of independent checks in the privilege separation monitor. Privilege separation has been enabled by default in since OpenBSD 3.2 (released in 2002) and has been mandatory since OpenBSD 6.1 (released in 2017). Potentially incompatible changes: In OpenSSH 8.9 the FIDO security key middleware interface changed and increments SSH_SK_VERSION_MAJOR. This release switches scp(1) from using the legacy scp/rcp protocol to using the SFTP protocol by default." Further information can be found in the project's release announcement. BSD Release: OpenBSD 6.4 |
OpenBSD is a security-focused operating system with a design that emphasises correct code and accurate documentation. The project has released OpenBSD 6.4 which includes many driver improvements, a feature which allows OpenSSH's configuration files to use service names instead of port numbers, and the Clang compiler will now replace some risky ROP instructions with safe alternatives. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the unveil() system call which allows applications to sandbox themselves, blocking their own access to the file system. This is especially useful for programs which operate on unknown data which may try to exploit or crash the application: "New unveil(2) system call to restrict file system access of the calling process to the specified files and directories. It is most powerful when properly combined with privilege separation and pledge(2)." Other security improvements include: "Implemented MAP_STACK option for mmap(2); new RETGUARD security mechanism on amd64 and arm64 - use per-function random cookies to protect access to function return instructions, making them harder to use in ROP gadgets...." Further details can be found in the project's release notes and in the changelog. Download: amd64/install64.iso (343MB, SHA256, signature), i386/install64.iso (324MB, SHA256, signature). |

Review: OpenBSD 3.6 Shows Steady Improvement |
NewsForge has published a review of the recently released OpenBSD 3.6: "What strikes me most about OpenBSD in general is the professional manner in which it is developed and released. By professional I don't mean 'corporate', as in meaningless meetings, bad design strategies, incompetent bosses, unreasonable deadlines, etc. I mean it's released on time with few problems and it does exactly what it claims to do. Each release is a small step forward; operating system development should be a battle of inches instead of historically disastrous attempts at giant leaps, and OpenBSD 3.6 personifies that philosophy. With the exception of SMP support, every enhancement new to 3.6 is a few inches forward." Read the rest of the review here.

OpenBSD - For Your Eyes Only |
Not a week goes by without a new computer security bulletin being issued. The problem is particularly acute on servers, and diligent system administrators face an endless (and often thankless) task watching for security alerts and downloading the relevant patches as soon as these become available. Not surprisingly, a lot of sysadmins would kill for an operating system in which the code was carefully audited in advance so that vulnerabilities were squashed before they could be exploited. In the following article, we explore OpenBSD, an operating system built from the ground up with security in mind. Though not suitable for every taste, OpenBSD will no doubt save many system administrators gray hairs. Even for those not running a server, this is a very stable and powerful OS and you don't necessarily need to be paranoid (though it helps) to enjoy using it.

Review: OpenBSD 3.4 SPARC64 Edition |
OSNews has published a technical review of OpenBSD 3.4 on SPARC64: "All of the operating systems under evaluation (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and coming soon Linux and Solaris) have one or more options available to make the system an effective and secure firewall. FreeBSD, NetBSD, and of course OpenBSD have the ability to run OpenBSD's pf (packet filter). They, along with Solaris, also have the ability to run IPFilter, which is what powered OpenBSD's firewall capabilities until a very public and very nasty spat between Darren Reed (author of IP Filter) and Theo De Raadt (infamous head of the OpenBSD) over licensing issues led to OpenBSD creating its own packet filter." The complete review.
