| About Tails
| The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The product ships with several Internet applications, including web browser, IRC client, mail client and instant messenger, all pre-configured with security in mind and with all traffic anonymised. To achieve this, Incognito uses the Tor network to make Internet traffic very hard to trace.

Distribution Release: Tails 7.0 |
A major update of Tails, a Debian-based portable Linux distribution that protects against surveillance and censorship, is now available. Tails 7.0 is based on the recently-released Debian 13 and includes GNOME 48: "We are very excited to present you Tails 7.0, the first version of Tails based on Debian 13 'Trixie' and GNOME 48 'Bengaluru'. Tails 7.0 brings new versions of many applications included in Tails. Tails 7.0 starts 10 – 15 seconds faster on most computers. We achieve this by changing the compression algorithm of the Tails USB and ISO images from xz to zstd. As a consequence, the image is 10% bigger than it would be with the previous algorithm. While testing this change, we noticed that Tails on USB sticks of poor quality can also start 20 seconds slower than on quality USB sticks. If you are in a place where counterfeit electronics are common, we recommend that you buy your USB stick from an international supermarket chain, which should have a more reliable supply chain. Included software: replace GNOME Terminal with GNOME Console; replace GNOME Image Viewer with GNOME Loupe; update Tor Browser to 14.5.7...." Continue to the release announcement for more information. Development Release: Tails 7.0 RC1 |
The Tails project, which builds a Debian-based live Linux distribution with focus on online anonymity, has announced the availability of the initial release candidate for Tails 7.0. The new version is based on the upcoming Debian 13 and ships with GNOME 48: "We are very excited to present you with a release candidate of the upcoming Tails 7.0. We plan to release Tails 7.0 officially on October 16. You can help us by testing this release candidate already. Tails 7.0 will be the first version of Tails based on Debian 13 'Trixie' and GNOME 48. It will bring new versions of many applications included in Tails. We have tested 7.0rc1 with the same extensive automatic and manual test suites that we use for regular releases. But it might still contain undiscovered issues. We will provide automatic security upgrades for Tails 7.0rc1, like we do for regular versions. Changes and updates: replace GNOME Terminal with GNOME Console; we broke the Root Terminal while working on this change, to open a root terminal, execute 'sudo -i' in a regular Console; replace GNOME Image Viewer with GNOME Loupe; remove Kleopatra from the Favorites menu...." Distribution Release: Tails 6.14.1 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (better known as Tails) distribution has a new release which changes how confinement is handled for the Tor web browser. "We improved the confinement technology that we use to protect your files from possible security vulnerabilities in Tor Browser. Until now, Tor Browser could only save downloads to and read files from a limited number of folders. With Tails 6.14.1, you can safely access any folder in your Home folder or Persistent Storage from Tor Browser. This new integration also solves other usability and accessibility issues: The Large Text accessibility feature works in Tor Browser. The Cursor Size accessibility feature works in Tor Browser. The minimize and maximize buttons are available again in the title bar. These improvements rely on 2 security technologies: the flexibility of the new XDG Desktop Portals of Flatpak allowed us to relax the AppArmor confinement, improving usability without compromising on security." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: Tails 6.11 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project has published an update for its 6.x series which fixes a serious security vulnerability. "The vulnerabilities described below were identified during an external security audit by Radically Open Security and disclosed responsibly to our team. We are not aware of these attacks being used against Tails users until now. These vulnerabilities can only be exploited by a powerful attacker who has already exploited another vulnerability to take control of an application in Tails. If you want to be extra careful and used Tails a lot since January 9 without upgrading, we recommend that you do a manual upgrade instead of an automatic upgrade. Prevent an attacker from installing malicious software permanently. In Tails 6.10 or earlier, an attacker who has already taken control of an application in Tails could then exploit a vulnerability in Tails Upgrader to install a malicious upgrade and permanently take control of your Tails. Doing a manual upgrade would erase such malicious software." The project also introduced new features, such as detecting when a USB thumb drive might be corrupted or have damaged partitions. Additional details can be found in the distribution's release announcement. Distribution Release: Tails 6.8 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release, Tails 6.8, improves handling of persistent storage, updates Tor Browser, and provides a better explanation when MAC randomization fails. "When the file system of the Persistent Storage has errors, Tails now offers you to repair the file system when unlocking from the Welcome Screen. Because not all file system errors can be safely recovered this way, we wrote comprehensive documentation on how to recover data from the Persistent Storage using complementary techniques. Update Tor Browser to 13.5.6. Improve the notification when a network interface is disabled because MAC address anonymization failed. Increase the maximum waiting time to 8 minutes when unlocking the Persistent Storage before returning an error. Hide shown password while unlocking Persistent Storage." A full list of changes can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (pkglist): tails-amd64-6.8.img (1,484MB, signature, torrent), tails-amd64-6.8.iso (1,474MB, signature, torrent). |

Distribution Release: Tails 6.4 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The distribution's latest version, Tails 6.4, introduces a random seed to help strength cryptographic functions: "Tails now stores a random seed on the USB stick to strengthen all cryptography. Having a secure random number generator is critical to some of the cryptography used in Tails, for example, in the Persistent Storage, Tor, or HTTPS. This random seed is stored outside of the Persistent Storage so that all users can benefit from stronger cryptography. Changes and updates: switch to using HTTPS addresses instead of an onion addresses for the Debian and Tails APT repositories, this makes the Additional Software feature more reliable; update Tor Browser to 13.0.16; update the Tor client to 0.4.8.12; update Thunderbird to 115.12.0. Fixed problems: fix more issues when unlocking the persistent storage; fix connecting to a mobile broadband network on some hardware; enable again the PDF reader of Thunderbird that we disabled in Tails 6.3 for security reasons; improve the error message of Tails Cloner when the target USB stick cannot be unmounted because it is being used...." Additional details can be found in the release announcement. Download (pkglist): tails-amd64-6.4.iso (1,396MB, signature, torrent), tails-amd64-6.4.img (1,406MB, signature, torrent). |

Distribution Release: Tails 6.0 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release, version 6.0, places a focus on accessing storage and protecting the user from malicious storage devices. "Tails 6.0 warns you about errors when reading or writing from your Tails USB stick. These alerts can help you diagnose hardware failures on your USB stick and backup your Persistent Storage before it's too late. Mount external devices automatically - When you plug in an external storage device, a USB stick or an external hard disk, Tails 6.0 mounts it automatically. If the storage device contains an encrypted partition, Tails 6.0 offers you to unlock the encryption automatically. This feature also simplifies how to unlock VeraCrypt encrypted volumes. Protection against malicious USB devices - If an attacker manages to plug a malicious USB device in your computer, they could run software that breaks the security built in Tails without your knowledge. To protect from such attacks while you are away from your computer, Tails 6.0 ignores any USB device that is plugged in while your screen is locked." These and additional features are covered in the release announcement. Download: tails-amd64-6.0.img (1,359MB, signature, torrent, pkglist). |
