Openfiler
Openfiler was a storage management operating system based on rPath Linux. It was powered by the Linux kernel and open source applications such as Apache, Samba, Linux Volume Management, ext3, Linux NFS and iSCSI enterprise target. Openfiler combines these ubiquitous technologies into a small, easy-to-manage solution fronted by a powerful web-based management interface. Openfiler allows building a Network Attached Storage (NAS) and/or Storage Area Network (SAN) appliance, using industry-standard hardware, in less than 10 minutes of installation time.

Lucas Holt has announced the release of MidnightBSD 1.2, the latest stable version of the project's FreeBSD-derived operating system with a goal to create an easy-to-use desktop with graphical ports management and system configuration. This version is mostly a security and bug-fix update: "I'm happy to announce the availability of MidnightBSD 1.2 for the amd64 and i386 architectures. This release focused on updating base system libraries and security. A significant effort has been put into updating various mports. Portsnap is now included in the base system. You can use it to fetch mports. As this is a relatively new feature, please report any issues. Bug fixes: fixed spell(1) by bringing back deroff(1); fixed a bug with the mdnsd startup script (/etc/rc.d/mdnsd) where it wouldn't modify the /etc/nsswitch.conf properly when enabling mDNSresponder. Security fixes: the kernel driver for /dev/midistat implements a handler for read(2) - this handler is not thread-safe, and a multi-threaded program can exploit races in the handler to cause it to copy out kernel memory outside the boundaries of midistat's data buffer...." MidnightBSD is a FreeBSD-derived operating system. A critical goal of the project is to create an easy-to-use desktop environment with graphical ports management. The project has published a new update, MidnightBSD 3.2.0, which introduces Ravenports: "Ravenports is available in MidnightBSD for the amd64 architecture. The initial installation process will prompt you to bootstrap Ravenports. This will initialize it in /raven/, and you will be able to install software packages using /raven/sbin/ravensw. By default, /raven/bin, /raven/sbin, and so on are not on the path. You can add them to the path to make running software in your shell easier. Please visit their website to learn more about Ravenports and find quickstart guides. You can choose either mports or Ravenports at installation time or use packages from both systems. Please note that mixing packages may have some complications, although they are installed in a completely different place from mports. There are various benefits to Ravenports, but a few are more updated packages and quite a few unique packages that mports doesn’t provide currently. For example, Ravenports has an updated Firefox package available. You will not see Ravenports presented as an option on an i386 install." MidnightBSD is a desktop-oriented operating system derived from FreeBSD. The project's latest stable release is MidnightBSD 3.0.0 which is available in i386 and x86_64 builds. With this leap in version from the 2.x series, there are a number of significant changes. "There are known issues with the Firefox, Chromium-bin, Midori and Epiphany web browser packages and mports that need to be corrected. (detected late, sorry). Issues were created on GitHub in mports repo to track these. (mesa issue, see below) i386 and amd64 packages are available, but there was an issue with our mesa version. It has been updated in mports but new packages haven't been built yet. When upgrading from a previous release, be sure to get on at least MidnightBSD 2.2.5 before jumping to 3.0. There are issues with usr.bin/lex on some systems. When doing a major upgrade from 2.x to 3.x, sometimes it's necessary to disable Perl builds in usr.bin/Makefile. If you get an error with buildworld in src/rescue/rescue, try removing camcontrol and df from the makefile temporarily." A complete list of changes can be found in the release notes. This release focused on updating third party software in the base system and some smaller enhancements. Bug fixes and new features: use md library sha256 implementation for lzma; /bin/sh updated based on FreeBSD 12-stable sources; root shell changed to tcsh from csh - this adds history to the root user's interactive shell; introduce a patch to dummynet from pfsense to increase max value to 4Gb/s instead of 2Gb/s; mport 2.2.0; fixed issues with desktop startup and created an initial .xinitrc file for GUI installs; a Hyper-V vPCI emulation change can cause SR-IOV (Single-Root I/O Virtualization) and DDA (Discrete Device Assignment) devices to fail to operate correctly under Hyper-V; Netcat - add sctp support from FreeBSD; add ptsname_r to libc...." Lucas Holt has announced the release of MidnightBSD 2.1.0, the latest stable build of the project's FreeBSD-derived operating system for desktops: "I am happy to announce the availability of MidnightBSD 2.1 for amd64 and i386. This is an incremental release focusing on bug fixes, improvements to the package manager and a new system compiler. LLVM updated to 10.0.1, mport 2.1.4. The majority of improvements come from the MidnightBSD package manager, mport. A number of long-standing bugs have been fixed. It now can update dependencies properly on install, update or upgrade scenarios. Previously, it would sometimes crash and force the user to do it manually. Several fixes have been made around PLIST processing. The mport utility now sets a character encoding so that extracting files with libarchive with special characters is more likely to work properly without a crash occurring. (lang/go port is a fun trigger of this bug). The libmport library no long relies on libdispatch. This is slower in a few scenarios, but most invocations are now faster as it doesn't need to setup the thread pools or do the locking it once did." Lucas Holt has announced the release of MidnightBSD 2.0, a major new version of the project's FreeBSD-derived operating system developed with desktop users in mind. Besides providing package upgrades, security updates and bug fixes, this release also imports features from FreeBSD 11: "I am happy to announce the availability of MidnightBSD 2.0 for amd64 and i386 architectures. This is a massive release focusing on base system improvements. We've imported many features from FreeBSD 11.x as part of the release. Changes: LLVM updated to 8.0.1; ELF ToolChain updated; OpenSSL updated; ZFS now supports parallel mounting; kernel logs jail IDs when a process exits; network firmware updates. Updated DRM code is now in mports for 2.0 and later - this allows us to update it outside of a release. Due to the nature of the release, there are a few minor build issues when upgrading from MidnightBSD 1.2.x by source." The project's latest release, MidnightBSD 1.1, mostly focuses on security updates and improving hardware support. "I'm happy to announce the availability of MidnightBSD 1.1 for amd64 and i386. This is a minor release to fix a few hardware and security issues that have come up since the 1.0 release. It is strongly recommended that you upgrade, particularly if you have newer Intel hardware. This release also includes a new version of OpenSSL. This is a move from 1.0.1 to 1.0.2p in base. Many mports are built with a package and will likely not be affected. It is still recommended that you rebuild any mports using SSL or update the packages as appropriate. OpenSSH was also updated and removes support for older SSH v1 connections." Lucas Holt has announced the availability of MidnightBSD 1.0, a new stable release of the project's FreeBSD-derived operating system with a goal to create an easy-to-use desktop environment with graphical ports management and system configuration: "I'm happy to announce the availability of MidnightBSD 1.0 for amd64 and i386. Over the years, many ambitious goals were set for our 1.0 release. As it approached, it was clear we wouldn't be able to accomplish all of them. This release is more of a natural progression rather than a groundbreaking event. It includes many updates to the base system, improvements to the package manager, an updated compiler and tools. Of particular note, you can now boot off of ZFS and use NVME SSDs and some AMD Radeon graphics cards support acceleration. AMD Ryzen support has greatly improved in this release. We also have added bhyve from FreeBSD. The single largest removal of functionality was the sensors framework. We found that there were some locking issues that couldn't easily be addressed without some major work. Sudo was removed from the base system and replaced with doas(1) from OpenBSD." Lucas Holt has announced the release of MidnightBSD 0.8, a new stable build of the project's FreeBSD-derived operating system developed with desktop users in mind: "MidnightBSD 0.8 released. MidnightBSD 0.8 includes several enhancements to the system. We switched system compilers from GCC 4.2 to LLVM/Clang 3.3 with plans to update to newer versions. We're making use of libdispatch in our package manager. Several long-standing bugs with the mports framework have been fixed." The release comes with several interesting mports (MidnightBSD's packages), but also a warning: "Notable mports to try: mlogind - the new MidnightBSD login manager; mport manager - a graphical front-end to MidnightBSD's package manager; Lumina desktop environment (there is no package for this yet); Xfce 4.12; Gnome 3.16.2. Note: this release is a little weak on packages and that will be corrected over time. Many ports actually work if you build from source, including Ruby, and GNOME 3.
