Void

The NetBSD project develops a lightweight operating system which runs on a wide range of hardware architectures. The project's latest release in the 7.x series is NetBSD 7.2, which offers USB 3.0 support, enhancements to Linux emulation, support for running on the Raspberry Pi 3 computer and updated drivers. "The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce NetBSD 7.2, the second feature update of the NetBSD 7 release branch. It represents a selected subset of fixes deemed important for security or stability reasons, as well as new features and enhancements. Some highlights of the 7.2 release are: support for USB 3.0; enhancements to the Linux emulation subsystem; fixes in binary compatibility for ancient NetBSD executables; iwm(4) driver for Intel Wireless 726x, 316x, 826x and 416x series added; support for Raspberry Pi 3 added; fix interrupt setup on Hyper-V VMs with Legacy Network Adapter; SVR4 and IBCS2 compatibility subsystems have been disabled by default (besides IBCS2 on VAX), these subsystems also do not auto-load their modules any more; various USB stability enhancements; numerous bug fixes and stability improvements." The developers of the highly portable NetBSD operating system have announced the release of an update to their NetBSD 9.x branch. The new NetBSD 9.4 release mostly contains bug fixes and minor upgrades. The project has also issued a warning about the 9.4 release containing an out of date version of OpenSSL for compatibility purposes: "NetBSD 9.4 contains various improvements pulled up from the current branch to the netbsd-9 stable branch since NetBSD 9.3 was cut on August 4, 2022. NetBSD 9.4 is primarily a bug and security fix release, however, there are some new features, such as support for more MegaRAID controllers, ZTE MF112 and D-Link DWM222 USB 3G modems, and improved CPU feature detection for newer AMD/Intel devices. All users of netbsd-9 should upgrade if they are not following the stable branch. Important: the version of OpenSSL included with NetBSD 9.x is now unsupported unless a support contract is purchased from OpenSSL, and cannot be upgraded without breaking the ABI compatibility we’ve promised for the netbsd-9 branch. The portable NetBSD operating system has reached a new milestone with the release of NetBSD 10.0. The new version introduces a number of performance and security improvements: "Benchmarks of NetBSD 10 show huge performance and scalability gains over NetBSD 9.x, especially on multiprocessor and multicore systems, for compute and filesystem-bound applications. Areas of improvement included: switched the kernel's file path lookup cache to use faster per-directory red-black trees; improved scheduler performance, including the ability to more appropriately spread load on a mixture of slow and fast cores (e.g. big.LITTLE Arm CPUs); various optimizations for the machine-independent virtual memory system; improved tracking of clean/dirty pages, speeding up fsync(2) on large files by orders of magnitude; improved parallelization - rewritten page allocator with awareness of CPU topology, replaced global counters with per-CPU counters, and reduced lock contention; improved the performance of the select(2) and poll(2) system calls; improved the performance of tmpfs; implemented lazy update of atime/mtime; various optimizations of architecture-dependent x86 and AArch64 code, vastly improved network and I/O throughput on aarch64...." NetBSD is a highlight portable operating system with a focus on having a clean, minimal design. The project's latest development snapshot is probably the last release candidate for NetBSD 10.0. "Since RC1 there have been numerous changes, including major updates to external software included in the release: Postfix, OpenSSH, and the firmware used for Raspberry PI devices. Various issues with RC1 have been fixed, including installer (sysinst) crashes. Lots of architecture specific fixes happend, e.g. various toolchain changes for VAX (so it is now finaly self-hosting again), and kernel changes for macppc, netwinder, and alpha. For RC3 only few (relatively) minor changes were made, including https certificate verification in libfetch (which is used by pkg_ad(1)), and also improvements to the EFI bootloader to better deal with booting from CD (or in virtual machines ISO images), plus lots of various bug fixes. Especially on amd64 machines please notes that we got a new DRM/KMS subsystem version, and this may lead to fallout on some hardware." NetBSD is a highly portable operating system which offers a minimal and clean design. The project has published its second (and probably final) release candidate for NetBSD 10.0. Among the enhancements in this snapshot are cyptographic updates and an experimental implementation of WireGuard. "Compatibility with WireGuard: A new interface, wg(4), provides a VPN tunnel compatible with the WireGuard specification. The driver is experimental and needs more testing. A userspace implementation using a rump kernel server is also included, see wg-userspace(4)/ The NetBSD implementation works with WireGuard implementations used by commercial VPN providers, Android, Linux, and more. Stronger, faster cryptography: Added an implementation of the Adiantum cipher for efficient disk encryption with cgd(4) on systems without AES acceleration. Added support for shared keys to cgdconfig(8), allowing multiple derived subkeys to be used across multiple drives. Switched the default password hashing algorithm to Argon2id, winner of the Password Hashing Competition. The algorithm's hardness automatically scales with system performance. Added support for Argon2id to cgdconfig(8) for use in password-based disk encryption. The kernel now takes advantage of CPU acceleration and vectorization for common cryptographic algorithms on x86 and Arm, including AES and ChaCha. All in-kernel implementations of AES are now constant-time on all architectures. Swap encryption is now automatic using the vm.swap_encrypt=1 sysctl(8) variable." Martin Husemann has announced the availability of first release candidate for NetBSD 10.0, nearly 11 months after its beta snapshot: "The NetBSD project is pleased to announce the first release candidate of the upcoming 10.0 release, please help testing. The netbsd-10 release branch is more than a year old now, so it is high time the 10.0 release makes it to the front stage. This matches the long time it took for the development branch to get ready for branching, a lot of development went into this new release. This also caused the release anouncement to be one of the longest we ever did. Especially on amd64 machines, please notes that we got a new DRM/KMS subsystem version and this may lead to fallout on some hardware. Unfortunately not all known bugs from the release engineering pre-release task list could be fixed in time for this release - we will continue to improve the current state and hope to have more of them solved for the next (10.1) release." NetBSD is a lightweight and highly portable operating system. Following three years of development, the NetBSD project has published a development snapshot for their upcoming 10.0 release: "While NetBSD 10.0 is expected to be a major milestone on performance, especially on multi-core systems, currently the BETA builds have some extra kernel diagnostics enabled that may reduce performance somewhat. Among the features you can expect to find in NetBSD 10 are reworked cryptography, including compatibility with WireGuard, automatic swap encryption, new disk encryption methods, and CPU acceleration in the kernel. In hardware support, there are updated GPU drivers from Linux 5.6, support for more ARM hardware (including Rockchip RK356X, NXP i.MX 8M, Amlogic G12¸ Apple M1, and Raspberry Pi 4), support for new security features found in the latest ARM CPUs, and support for Realtek 2.5 gigabit and new Intel 10/25/40 gigabit ethernet adapters. compat_linux has been ported to AArch64 and DTrace has been ported to MIPS. For retrocomputing enthusiasts, there's improved multiprocessor support on Alpha, and more iMac G5 support. The Xen hypervisor support has received a major rework." A malicious DomU could trigger a Dom0 kernel panic. xen: removed support for rx-flip mode in xennet(4) and xvif(4) as part of XSA-362 fixes (driver already defaulted to the faster rx-copy mode). zfs: various stability fixes. Fixed 'panic when creating a directory on a NFS served ZFS'. coda: fixed 'coda client opens wrong files instead of cache containers'. hyperv: fixed 'unable to ifconfig(8) up/down with hvn device'. msdosfs: fixed 'BOOTSIG0 and BOOTSIG1 checks prevent mounting Raspberry Pi Pico’s USB mass storage'."
