MoviX, MoviX², eMoviX
MoviX was a package that allows you to create bootable CDs able to boot & autoplay your multimedia files. It was intended mainly to play video files but if you want it can be used to play also audio files. I plan to release eventually a distro similar to MoviX but aimed at audio only, so stay tuned! The philosophy behind MoviX was to make possible to generate video/audio CDs that are self-sufficient, i.e. that you can play on every PC regardless of what was installed on it: just insert the MoviX CD inside a CD/DVD-ROM and boot the PC from there! MoviX2 was a small Linux distro on CD aimed at playing multimedia: when you boot your PC with the MoviX2 CD the distro should be able to start X-Window and launch gmplayer, the GUI interface to mplayer, so that you are left with a nice user-friendly interface you can control by your mouse. At that point you can safely remove the MoviX2 CD and play all multimedia files you want: DVD [no zone constraint], VCD, DivX, avi, mpg, mp3, ogg etc.

Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 17.10. The new version features a number of desktop changes, including a global menu bar placed at the top of the screen. The 17.10 release also features an improved Heads-Up Display (HUD) which makes it possible to search through application menus using only the keyboard. "This is something we started during Ubuntu MATE 16.10 and never perfected, but is now ready for prime time. A favourite of Unity 7 users is the Heads-Up Display (HUD) which provides a way to search for and run menu-bar commands without your fingers ever leaving the keyboard. So if you're trying to find that single filter in GIMP but can't remember which filter category it fits into or if you can't recall if preferences sits under File, Edit or Tools on your favourite browser, you can just search for it rather than hunting through the menus. Just like Global Menus the HUD is currently only available via the Contemporary, Cupertino and Mutiny [layouts]." Further information on this release, along with screen shots, can be found in the project's release announcement. About Ubuntu MATE
Ubuntu MATE is a desktop Linux distribution which aims to bring the simplicity and elegance of the Ubuntu operating system through a classic, traditional desktop environment - the MATE desktop. MATE is the continuation of the GNOME 2 desktop environment which was used as Ubuntu's default desktop until 10.10 (when it was replaced by Unity). The project began its life as an Ubuntu "remix", but starting with version 15.04, it was formally accepted as an official member of the Ubuntu family of Linux distributions.

This version includes the MATE 1.26.2 desktop, reverts to the Slick Greeter applications, and reduces the ISO size by almost an entire gigabyte. "Here are the highlights of what's changed since the release of Ubuntu MATE 24.04: ships stable MATE Desktop 1.26.2 with a handful of bug fixes; switched back to Slick Greeter (replacing Arctica Greeter) due to a race condition in the boot process which results the display manager failing to initialise; returning to Slick Greeter reintroduces the ability to easily configure the login screen via a graphical application, something users have been requesting be re-instated; Ubuntu MATE 24.10 ISO image is now 3.3GB, down from 4.1GB in the 24.04 LTS release - this is thanks to some fixes in the installer that no longer require as many packages in the live-seed; accompanying MATE Desktop 1.26.2 and Linux 6.11 are Firefox 131, Celluloid 0.27, Evolution 3.54, LibreOffice 24.8.2." Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 23.04 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 23.04. The project's new version is a gentle upgrade from the previous short-term support release and includes version 1.26.1 of the MATE desktop. "Ubuntu MATE 23.04 is the least exciting Ubuntu MATE release ever. The good news is, if you liked Ubuntu MATE 22.10 then it is more of the same; just with better artwork! I entered this development cycle full of energy and enthusiasm off the back of the Ubuntu Summit in Prague, but then I was seriously ill and had a long stay in hospital. I'm recovering well and should be 100% in a couple of months. This setback and also changing jobs a few months ago has meant that I've not been able to invest the usual time and effort into Ubuntu MATE. I'm happy to say that I've been able to deliver another solid release with the help of the Ubuntu community. What changed since the Ubuntu MATE 22.10? Both MATE Desktop and Ayatana Indicators have seen some version bumps that fix an assortment of minor bugs; Flatpak is no longer installed by default, but can still be installed should you want to use it...." This release also includes the PipeWire media stack installed by default and offers version 6.2 of the Linux kernel. The release announcement and release notes offer additional details. Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 22.10 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 22.10. This release reportly offers a number of small, polishing changes rather than a lot of large, technical adjustments. Some of the desktop tweaks include the following: "The usual point release updates to MATE desktop and Ayatana Indicators have been included that fix an assortment on minor bugs. The main change in MATE desktop is to MATE Panel, where we've included an early snapshot release of mate-panel 1.27.0 along with a patch set that adds centre alignment of panel applets. This much requested feature comes from Ubuntu MATE community contributor Gordon N. Squash and allows panel applets to be centre aligned, as well as the usual left and right alignment. I'm sure you'll all join me in thanking Gordon for working on this feature. Centre aligning of applet icons will ship with MATE Desktop 1.28, but we're including it early for Ubuntu MATE users. We've updated MATE Tweak to correctly save/restore custom layouts that use centre aligned applets and all the panel layouts shipped with Ubuntu MATE 22.10 have been updated so they're compatible with center alignment of applets." Further details can be found in the project's release announcement and in the release notes. Download: ubuntu-mate-22.10-desktop-amd64.iso (3,051MB, SHA256, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 22.04 |
Martin Wimpress has announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 22.04, a long-term support Ubuntu community edition. The new release ships with version 1.26.1 of the MATE desktop, offers an updated HUD, and refreshes the MATE Tweak tool. "MATE Tweak has refreshed its supported for 3rd party compositors. Support for Compton has been dropped, as it is no longer actively maintained and comprehensive support for picom has been added. picom has three compositor options: Xrender, GLX and Hybrid. All three are can be selected via MATE Tweak as the performance and compatibility of each varies depending on your hardware. Some people choose to use picom because they get better gaming performance or screen tearing is reduced. Some just like subtle animation effects picom adds. Recent versions of rofi, the tool used by MATE HUD to visualise menu searches, has a new theme system. MATE HUD has been updated to support this new theme engine and comes with two MATE specific themes (mate-hud and mate-hud-rounded) that automatically adapt to match the currently selected GTK theme."
