The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based distribution which is designed for anonymous web browsing and communication over the Internet. The Tails project has announced the availability of Tails 2.11. The new version features a number of bug fixes, including a fix for local root privilege escalation and the Tor Browser has been updated to version 6.5.1. The project has also reported the alternative anonymizing network utility I2P will be dropped in future versions of the distribution: "We are very sad to announce that Tails 2.11 will be the last version to include I2P, an alternative anonymizing network. Maintaining software like I2P well-integrated in Tails takes time and effort and our team is too busy with other priorities. Unfortunately, we failed to find a developer outside of our team to maintain I2P in Tails. As a consequence, the last version of I2P being shipped in Tails is 0.9.25, which is nearly one year old now at this moment. This random seed is stored outside of the Persistent Storage so that all users can benefit from stronger cryptography. Fixed problems: fix more issues when unlocking the persistent storage; fix connecting to a mobile broadband network on some hardware; enable again the PDF reader of Thunderbird that we disabled in Tails 6.3 for security reasons; improve the error message of Tails Cloner when the target USB stick cannot be unmounted because it is being used...." Mount external devices automatically - When you plug in an external storage device, a USB stick or an external hard disk, Tails 6.0 mounts it automatically. If the storage device contains an encrypted partition, Tails 6.0 offers you to unlock the encryption automatically. This feature also simplifies how to unlock VeraCrypt encrypted volumes. Protection against malicious USB devices - If an attacker manages to plug a malicious USB device in your computer, they could run software that breaks the security built in Tails without your knowledge. To protect from such attacks while you are away from your computer, Tails 6.0 ignores any USB device that is plugged in while your screen is locked." The Tails project, which develops a Debian-based live DVD/USB with built-in Internet anonymity features, has announced the availability of the initial release candidate for the upcoming Tails 6.0. The new version is based on Debian 12 and features the GNOME 43 desktop environment: "We are very excited to present you a release candidate of the upcoming Tails 6.0. We plan to release Tails 6.0 officially on February 27. You can help us by testing a release candidate of Tails 6.0 before February 18. Tails 6.0 will be the first version of Tails based on Debian 12 'Bookworm' and GNOME 43. It will bring new versions of most of the software included in Tails as well as several important security and usability improvements. We will provide security upgrades for Tails 6.0~rc1 like we do for regular versions of Tails. New features: mount external devices automatically; protection against malicious USB devices; dark mode and night light; asier screenshots and screencasts; easier Gmail in Thunderbird...." The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project has added a few new tools to the distribution in Tails 5.13, including the cURL downloading program which will run over the Tor network by default. Encryption for persistent storage has also been upgraded. "Add curl, a command line tool to download over HTTPS, FTP, and other protocols. curl can be useful for online investigations as an alternative to wget. Everything you do with curl goes through the Tor network. If you want to use curl on a local network, use /usr/bin/curl instead. Use LUKS2 by default for all new Persistent Storage and LUKS encrypted volumes. LUKS2 provide stronger cryptography by default. We will provide a migration plan from LUKS1 to LUKS2 for existing Persistent Storage in Tails 5.14 (early June). Update Tor Browser to 12.0.6." Although the new version continues to be based on Debian 11, it brings some surprising changes, including improved persistence features as well as Wayland as a replacement of X.Org: "Tails 5.8 is the most important release of Tails in years. It includes both major redesign of existing features, important usability improvements, and hardened security. After 2 years of hard work, we are extremely proud to present you a complete redesign of Persistent Storage. Persistent Storage hasn't changed much since its first release in 2012 because the code was hard to modify and improve. This release also disables forced HTTPS connections to make it easier for users to connect to wi-fi networks where a sign-in is required. "Harden several aspects of our Linux kernel. Disable HTTPS-only mode in the Unsafe Browser to make it easier to sign in to Wi-Fi networks. Update Tor Browser to 11.5.2. Update tor to 0.4.7.10. Update the Linux kernel to 5.10.136.
