Clemens Toennies has announced a new release of the Maui Linux distribution. Maui Linux is a continuation of Netrunner's Kubuntu-based edition, but Maui Linux has been re-based on the KDE neon project. The new version, Maui Linux 2, includes many package upgrades and cloned package repositories for increased flexibility. The distribution has also switched to using the Calamares system installer. "We decided to move our repositories to a new infrastructure and cloned the Neon-based repo so we have control over when to push new updates to the user and let the users themselves decide when they want to move to a new Plasma version or KDE Frameworks 5 version. That way we provide a very stable KDE Plasma user experience without losing the option to have the latest and greatest of KDE Plasma. In order to streamline the installation process we decided to switch to the distribution independent installer Calamares. This one installs automatically all language packs for the default applications shipped with Maui and the language you choose during installation." Further details on the new version can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (SHA256): maui-2-64bit.iso (1,924MB, torrent, pkglist). |

About Maui
Maui Linux is a desktop Linux distribution based on KDE neon and featuring KDE's Plasma desktop. It was created in August 2016 as a continuation of Netrunner's Kubuntu-based "Desktop" edition, but it was re-based on KDE neon which is a more cutting-edge project with frequent updates and a semi-rolling release model. Besides providing a KDE-centric distribution with many popular KDE packages included on the live DVD, the project also focuses on integrating non-KDE software, such as Firefox, Thunderbird or VLC with the underlying infrastructure of the Plasma desktop.

Distribution Release: Maui Linux 17.03 |
Leszek Lesner has announced the release of Maui Linux 17.03, a new version of the project's desktop Linux distribution featuring the latest KDE Plasma desktop. It is based on KDEneon. This release comes with updated packages, an improved Calamares system installer, and various desktop enhancements: "The Maui team is happy to announce the release of Maui Linux 17.03, code name 'Cuba Libre'. This release comes with plenty new package updates and KDE Plasma 5.9.3. It also ships Frameworks 5.31, Qt 5.7.1 and LTS Linux kernel 4.4. Firefox has been updated to version 51 and Thunderbird to version 45. Calamares has been updated to its latest version 3.1. Instead of the standard volume applet, this release ships the volume applet from 'Zren' found in the KDE Store. This release restores the 'Minimize All' functionality as a hot corner trigger (instead of the default 'Show Desktop'). Touching the lower right corner once with your mouse cursor minimizes all windows, while doing it right again brings them all up in the previous order." Distribution Release: Maui Linux 2.1 |
Clemens Toennies has announced a new release of Maui Linux 2.1, an updated version of the project's distribution featuring the KDE Plasma 5.8.3 desktop. It is based on Ubuntu and KDE neon. This version represents an updated installation image for new installations: "Maui installation ISO image has been updated to 2.1. This mainly focuses on fixing some reported installer issues and it comes with some newer package versions, otherwise it is the same as Maui 2. Due to Maui being a part-rolling distribution based on Ubuntu 'Xenial', updating to Maui 2.1 is not required, nor is it technically correct. All versions of Maui share the same base, so the Backports channels is the common shared source where updated packages from Maui and KDE neon land after being tested for all Maui versions. So if you installed from any Maui version so far and enable the Backports channels and Update, you should have the same updated system. We release updated ISO images from time to time so that new users don't need to update too many packages right from the start." Here is the full release announcement. Distribution Release: Maui Linux 1 |
The Netrunner project has discontinued its Kubuntu-based edition and replaced it with a new distribution, called Maui Linux, which uses KDE neon as a base. The first release of the new distribution, version 1, is built on a lon-term support (LTS) base, but it is expected to provide cutting edge versions of KDE software in a semi-rolling release model. "Maui will continue as the full desktop version of the previously Kubuntu-based Netrunner line. What basically equals Netrunner+1 is simply released under the new name 'Maui 1'. Being based on KDE neon, Maui also marks the transition to an LTS base, where some parts are receiving regular updates during its life cycle (so called 'partially rolling'). The main parts which will be kept up-to-date are Plasma, Frameworks and KDE Applications, single ones like Firefox and Thunderbird, plus anything that gets updated on Xenial via backporting. This allows us to frequently release updated ISOs shipping the latest KDE software." The release announcement, as well as the project's About page have more information.
