Clement Lefebvre has announced a new release of the Linux Mint distribution. The new release, Linux Mint 17.3, is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and is available in MATE and Cinnamon editions. Some of the key changes in this release involve the handling of software updates and managing hardware drivers. "Linux Mint 17.3 is a long term support release which will be supported until 2019. It comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop experience more comfortable to use. Software repositories are very important. We use them all the time when installing new software or performing updates. They need to be fast and reliable. This was a major point of focus in the development of Linux Mint 17.3. Software repositories are mirrored (i.e. duplicated on many servers) all over the world. The main goal of the Software Sources configuration tool is to make it easy to find the best available mirror for you; one that is: reliable and fully up to date; fast and responsive. To find the fastest mirrors, the Software Sources tool now detects your location and starts its speed tests with mirrors near you." Further information can be found in the release announcements for the Cinnamon and MATE editions. Distribution Release: Linux Mint 20.1 |
The Linux Mint team has announced the release of Linux Mint 20.1, a long-term support release which will continue to receive updates until 2025. The project's newest version features a new web apps manager which will assist users in setting up websites to act more like native applications. The project is also including the Hypnotix IPTV application and the ability to mark files as favourites for quick access. "Time and time again we need to access the same files. Up until Linux Mint 20.1 we would remember where they were stored and slowly get to them using the file manager, bookmark their containing folder to get to them faster, look in the recently opened document section, hoping to find them in there, clutter our desktop with direct links... Well, there's a much better way now! If you're working on a file and you know you access it often, right-click it and select 'Add to Favorites'. You'll see a little star pop up in your panel. That's where all favorite files are, just one click away. You'll also find them in your application menu." Further information can be found in the project's release announcements for its three editions (Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce) and in the release notes (Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce). Distribution Release: Linux Mint 20 |
The Linux Mint team have announced the release of Linux Mint 20. The new version is based on Ubuntu 20.04 and provides five years of support. The new release is available in three flavours: Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce. Linux Mint 20 offers support for different scaling on HiDPI displays, includes a new tool called Warpinator for sharing files on the local area network, and the welcome window provides quick access to changing the desktop colour theme. "The star of the show in Linux Mint 20 is a new application called Warpinator. 10 years ago, Linux Mint 6 featured a tool called "Giver" which could share files across the local network. Without any server or configuration, computers would automatically see each others and you could simply drag and drop files from one to another. When the Giver project was discontinued it had to be removed from Linux Mint and we’ve been missing that functionality ever since. Warpinator is a reimplementation of Giver. Server configuration (FTP, NFS, Samba) is overkill for casual file transfers between two computers, and it's a real pity to use external media (Internet services, USB sticks, external HDDs) just to share files when there’s a local network which could do just that." Further information can be found in the project's release announcements (Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce) and in the release notes (Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce). This major new release is based on Ubuntu 20.04 and, as usual, comes in three separate desktop editions with Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce. It will be supported with bug fixes and security updates for five years. "Linux Mint 20 is a long-term support release which will be supported until 2025. Development Release: Linux Mint 4 Beta "LMDE" |
The Linux Mint team has announced the availability of a new beta version of Linux Mint Debian Edition, a platform which provides Mint-specific packages and technology while using the Debian distribution as its foundation. "This is the beta release for LMDE 4 'Debbie'. LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for 'Linux Mint Debian Edition'. Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE is also one of our development targets, to guarantee the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu. LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead. Known issues: the root account is locked by default; to add support for shared folders, drag and drop, proper acceleration and display resolution in VirtualBox, click on the 'Devices' menu of VirtualBox and choose 'Insert Guest Additions CD Image'; if you're facing issues with your microphone or your sound output, please install 'pavucontrol'...." The release announcement includes further information, including minimum hardware requirements while tips and known issues can be found in the distribution's release notes. Distribution Release: Linux Mint 19.3 |
The Linux Mint team has published an update to the project's 19.x series, which is based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. The distribution's newest release is Linux Mint 19.3 which is available in three editions (Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce). One of the big new features in this release is proactive System Reports which will notify the user of potential problems. "You'll notice something new in your system tray after you install Linux Mint 19.3. A little warning icon tries to catch your attention and indicates there are a few things for you to review. In the past, we worked on improving documentation (such as the installation guide) and the welcome you get when you first log in (the first steps section of the Welcome Screen for instance). In Linux Mint 19.3, we're going a step further and we're trying to detect potential issues in your computer. If you're missing a language package, a multimedia codec, if a hardware driver or a new version of Linux Mint is available, this little icon will let you know and provide solutions." Further details can be found in the release announcements (Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce). Development Release: Linux Mint 19.3 Beta |
The Linux Mint team has published a new beta version of the project's upcoming 19.3 release. The beta offers a preview of some new features, including a more advanced System Reports tool which will try to proactively let the user know about potential problems: "You'll notice something new in your system tray after you install Linux Mint 19.3. A little warning icon tries to catch your attention and indicates there are a few things for you to review. In the past, we worked on improving documentation (such as the Installation Guide) and the welcome you get when you first log in (the first steps section of the Welcome Screen for instance). If you're missing a language package, a multimedia codec, if a hardware driver or a new version of Linux Mint is available, this little icon will let you know and provide solutions. In the documentation, the release notes and to some extent the welcome screen, we document broad issues which affect all users in general." Further details can be found in the project's release announcements (Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce) and in the What's New document. Distribution Release: Linux Mint 19.2 |
The Linux Mint team has published an update to the distribution's 19.x series. The new version, Linux Mint 19.2, is based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, offering five years of support. The new update offers several user interface improvements. For instance, it is now possible to configure the width overlay scrollbars, and programs with the same name show up with added descriptions in the application menu so that users can tell X-Apps from GNOME programs and Flatpaks from Deb packages. "The application menu is faster and it now identifies and distinguishes duplicates. If two applications have the same name, the menu will show more information about them. In your application menu, Xed is the 'Text Editor'. If you install Gedit, you no longer end up with two 'Text Editor' entries. Instead, you'll see 'Text Editor (Xed)' and 'Text Editor (Gedit)'. The same goes for Flatpaks, if you install the Flatpak of an application you already have, the menu will distinguish between the two to let you know which one is the one from the repositories and which one is the Flatpak." Further details can be found in the project's release announcements for each edition (Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce). Download (pkglist): linuxmint-19.2-cinnamon-64bit.iso (1,916MB, SHA256, signature, torrent), linuxmint-19.2-mate-64bit.iso (1,994MB, SHA256, signature, torrent), linuxmint-19.2-xfce-64bit.iso (1,875MB, SHA256, signature, torrent). |
