Neptune
Neptune is a GNU/Linux distribution for desktops. It is based on Debian's Stable branch, except for a newer kernel, some drivers and newer versions of popular applications, such as LibreOffice. It also ships with the latest version of the KDE desktop. The distribution's main goals are to provide a good-looking general-purpose desktop with pre-configured multimedia playback and to offer an easy-to-use USB installer with a persistence option.

Tomasz Jokiel has announced the release of Porteus Kiosk 3.6.0, the latest quarterly update of the project's single-purpose Gentoo-based distribution for web kiosks. This release introduces a server edition which designed for monitoring, accessing and managing Porteus Kiosk clients: "I'm pleased to announce that Porteus Kiosk 3.6.0 is now available for download. The new version sums all the development which happened in the last three months. Linux kernel has been updated to version 4.1.13, Mozilla Firefox to version 38.4.0 ESR and Google Chrome to version 46.0.2490.86. Packages from the userland are upgraded to portage snapshot tagged on 20151128. Here is a short overview of the most notable features introduced in this release: implemented support for associating the kiosk clients with Porteus Kiosk Server - our brand new operating system which allows monitoring, accessing and managing the clients even if they are placed behind a NAT, proxy or firewall; added support for injecting or replacing default browser preferences with a text file hosted on the network...." | About Porteus Kiosk
|
| Porteus Kiosk is a lightweight Gentoo-based Linux operating system which has been downscaled and confined to allow the use of one application only - the Firefox web browser. The browser has been locked down to prevent users from tampering with settings or downloading and installing software. When the kiosk boots, it automatically opens Firefox to the user's preferred home page. The browsing history is not kept, no passwords are saved, and many menu items have been disabled for increased security. When Firefox is restarted all caches are cleared and the browser reopens with a clean session. Note: Up to version 5.5.0 Porteus Kiosk was free to download and use. Version 6.0.0 and up require an on-line account to download and a paid subscription to activate.

Major software upgrades in this release include: Linux kernel 6.1.20, Google Chrome 108.0.5359.124 and Mozilla Firefox 102.9.0 ESR. Packages from the userland are upgraded to the Portage snapshot tagged on 2023-03-18. Added a possibility to enable watchdog timer in our systems. Watchdog is supposed to automatically restart the PC when a failing condition occurs. This is useful for unattended deployments, e.g. digital signage. Added support for downloading components and system updates from the server mirrors. The nearest server is determined automatically by the system. The MD5 authentication protocol is now supported in 802.1x wired networks. Added support for storage devices formatted with an exFAT filesystem. Porteus Kiosk is a lightweight Gentoo-based Linux operating system which has been scaled down and confined to allow the use of one application only: a web browser. The project has published a new release, Porteus Kiosk 5.4.0, which improves hardware decoding and enables the OpenH264 plugin for Firefox. Major software upgrades in this release include Linux kernel 5.20.25, Google Chrome 87.0.4280.141 and Mozilla Firefox 78.8.0 ESR. Packages from the userland are upgraded to portage snapshot tagged on 2021-03-14. This is the last kiosk release which supports Adoble FlashPlayer plugin. Within the next 6 months we are planning to upgrade the browsers to versions where Flash support is removed by the upstream developers. If your web pages still contain a Flash content then please migrate it to HTML 5 and JavaScript as soon as possible. In Kiosk 5.2.0 we have added a libva-intel-media-driver package and updated the VAAPI stack. This is in preparation for a much welcome 'hardware accelerated video decode' which should become a reality in the next kiosk version on selected GPUs.
