The LXLE project, which creates a lightweight desktop distribution based on Ubuntu, has announced the availability of a beta release of new small office and business edition. "I recently setup a small local garage with Linux. Particularly LXLE which is now handling all their business needs. This led me to attempt an LXLE version specifically designed for small to micro businesses. Probably businesses with 10 or less employees and of course freelancers should be able to install and use the system to handle most business interactions. What does the LS stand for? The LS stands for LanShop, which basically indicates that the main business apps are available to anyone on the network or LAN." The new edition offers a point of sale system, employee time clock, a content management site, business account software and a built in web server using Lighttpd, among other features. A complete list of business oriented features is available in the development build can be found in the project's release announcement. Downloads: lxle-ls-14.04.2.iso (1,459MB, MD5, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: LXLE 16.04.1 |
Ronnie Whisler has announced the availability of LXLE 16.04.1, a new major release from the distribution project that builds a lightweight Ubuntu-based variant with LXDE as the default desktop. This is the distribution's first stable release based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS: "LXLE 16.04.1 'Eclectica' released. LXLE is built upon Ubuntu Mini LTS releases. Lubuntu core is used as a starting point. This version is based on 16.04.1. All software has been updated to their latest stable versions available for Ubuntu 16.04.1. Added PPAs ensure up-to-date applications of some of the most popular software, such as LibreOffice. Overall the applications have been streamlined and slimmed down, even with the inclusion of three small Assistive Technology programs, like a magnifier and onscreen keyboard. This version of LXLE was pretty difficult. A number of GNOME applications had to be replaced with their MATE twin applications to maintain a consistent user interface. Programs and solutions had to come from many different sources. A very eclectic OS, hence the name, Eclectica." See the complete release announcement for more information and screenshots. Distribution Release: LXLE 14.04.4 |
LXLE is a lightweight distribution based on Ubuntu's long term support releases. The LXLE project has released a stable update to the distribution's 14.04 LTS branch. The new version, LXLE 14.04.4, features security fixes, updated Seamonkey packages and various small visual improvements. "The 'Posh' version of LXLE has been readied and tested since its last release candidate and in the subsequent days of the update to Seamonkey 2.40, which is a core component of the overall desktop experience provided by the operating system; ensuring performance and compatibility with the suite update was critical before official release. During this wait, small polish to the browser and overall user interface was applied, essentially smoothing out any rough edges of the new 'Posh Paradigm' introduced in this release. Posh is expected to provide not only a familiar yet dynamic low resource LXDE desktop but also a layout easily mimicked by LXQt if a version is ever officially offered." Additional information and screen shots are available in the project's release announcement. Download: lxle-14.04.4-64bit.iso (1,401MB, MD5, pkglist). |

Development Release: LXLE 14.04.4 RC |
The LXLE project, which produces a lightweight desktop distribution based on Ubuntu, has published a new release candidate for their upcoming launch of LXLE 14.04.4. The new development snapshot polishes the desktop implementation and features a number of bug fixes. "While working on changes to the user interface, components and software that were to be included with the upcoming 16.04 release, it became clear that updating 14.04 to match 16.04 was inevitable as 12.04 has been. So instead of backing tracking, the distribution tippy toed to the edge with the latest LXDE core to bring the features necessary to implement the new LXLE user interface with the 'Posh Paradigm'. Building on the ideas of many desktops of the past and present paradigms while taking advantage of new and existing features of the latest LXDE desktop most users should find themselves to be in a comfortable, familiar, highly productive environment. While trying not to take away features the goal was to streamline running services, remove buggy features while providing LXLE with its own distinct user interface." A list of changes and screen shots can be found in the project's release announcement. Downloads (MD5): lxle-14.04.4-64bit.iso (1,351MB, pkglist). |

Development Release: LXLE 14.04.4 Beta |
The LXLE project which produces a lightweight distribution based on Ubuntu, has launched a new beta for its users to test. LXLE 14.04.4 Beta offers mostly bug fixes and application updates over the precious release. "Only minor changes in this version such as polish, theme cohesion, browser enhancements and bug squashing. Just two small software changes occurred. The first was replacing Xsane scanner with Flegita to provide a simpler interface with some nice options for scanning while also integrating with GIMP. Xscreensaver was replaced with light-locker since Xscreensaver had been causing conflicts with Winpick. Switching to light-locker seems to have resolved that while also freeing up some RAM. LX-Colors themes for Openbox/GTK is now standard, providing numerous elegant themes for the LXDE desktop. LXLE now uses the LX-Mixed theme as its default system wide look. The elementary icon set has also been updated system wide, this includes the default icon set used in LibreOffice." Further details can be found in the project's release announcement. This update to the 14.04 series includes a number of package updates while some default applications have been changed. "Delays, delays. First with SeaMonkey then Lanshop. Still, moving forward with the release of LXLE 14.04.3 OS for both 32 and 64-bit machines. 12.04.5 32-bit has also been updated to reflect the same changes. Notable new features in this release include, 'Xautolock' providing a top left hotcorner that invokes the 'WinPick" script which is an expose like utility and finally 'OpenSnap' added true aerosnap with just a simple drag and drop. All software has been updated to its latest stable version given its availability in the main software repositories and additional PPAs. Changelog: Galculator dropped for GNOME Calculator due to user requests; StartupDiskCreator dropped for MultibootUSB, more features and flexibility; Minitube removed, now depends on VLC, producing duplicate codecs; DejaDup removed since Systemback provides similar options...." Distribution Release: LXLE 14.04.2, 12.04.5 |
The developers behind the LXLE distribution have announced the availability of LXLE 14.04.2 and LXLE 12.04.5, the project's respective 64-bit and 32-bit branches. The new release features a number of important application changes. For example, Firefox, Thunderbird and Filezilla have been replaced by the SeaMonkey suit and FireFTP. The Vokoscreen reader has also been replaced by the RecordMyDesktop application. Plus the update manager application has been dropped in favour of the Synaptic package manager. "The next incremental update of LXLE has been released, ticking it up to 14.04.2 along with the last 32-bit version of LXLE ever, which is based on 12.04.5. The 32-bit closely mirrors the changes to the latest 64-bit edition of the OS. As announced in our beta release LXLE now sports a highly customized version of the SeaMonkey Internet Suite. A fairly lengthy article was written on why this decision was made and that it wasn't something taken lightly. To add to that the other underlying reason was we wanted the distribution to showcase an excellent community driven browser to help spur support and perhaps encourage developers to join the project and lend a hand to the overworked small team of Mozilla volunteers still moving forward with Netscape's original suite idea." Further details and screen shots are included in the project's release notes. Downloads (MD5): lxle-14.04.2.iso (1,312MB, MD5, pkglist). |
