Tails, The Amnesic Incognito Live System, version 1.4, has been released. The new version of the Debian-based live disc offers users a number of new features, including an updated copy of the Tor Browser and the Tor anonymity software has been upgraded to version 0.2.6.7. Tails 1.4 also ships with Paperkey, a program which allows users to print physical copies of their security keys. "Tor Browser 4.5 now has a security slider that you can use to disable browser features, such as JavaScript, as a trade-off between security and usability. The security slider is set to low by default to provide the same level of security as previous versions and the most usable experience. We disabled in Tails the new circuit view of Tor Browser 4.5 for security reasons. You can still use the network map of Vidalia to inspect your circuits. Tails OpenPGP Applet now has a shortcut to the gedit text editor, thanks to Ivan Bliminse. Paperkey lets you print a backup of your OpenPGP secret keys on paper." Further information is available in the distribution's release announcement. It is recommended users upgrade to the latest version of Tails and read the project's list of known issues in order to achieve the highest level of on-line safety. Distribution Release: Tails 6.4 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The distribution's latest version, Tails 6.4, introduces a random seed to help strength cryptographic functions: "Tails now stores a random seed on the USB stick to strengthen all cryptography. Having a secure random number generator is critical to some of the cryptography used in Tails, for example, in the Persistent Storage, Tor, or HTTPS. This random seed is stored outside of the Persistent Storage so that all users can benefit from stronger cryptography. Changes and updates: switch to using HTTPS addresses instead of an onion addresses for the Debian and Tails APT repositories, this makes the Additional Software feature more reliable; update Tor Browser to 13.0.16; update the Tor client to 0.4.8.12; update Thunderbird to 115.12.0. Fixed problems: fix more issues when unlocking the persistent storage; fix connecting to a mobile broadband network on some hardware; enable again the PDF reader of Thunderbird that we disabled in Tails 6.3 for security reasons; improve the error message of Tails Cloner when the target USB stick cannot be unmounted because it is being used...." Distribution Release: Tails 6.0 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release, version 6.0, places a focus on accessing storage and protecting the user from malicious storage devices. "Tails 6.0 warns you about errors when reading or writing from your Tails USB stick. These alerts can help you diagnose hardware failures on your USB stick and backup your Persistent Storage before it's too late. Mount external devices automatically - When you plug in an external storage device, a USB stick or an external hard disk, Tails 6.0 mounts it automatically. If the storage device contains an encrypted partition, Tails 6.0 offers you to unlock the encryption automatically. This feature also simplifies how to unlock VeraCrypt encrypted volumes. Protection against malicious USB devices - If an attacker manages to plug a malicious USB device in your computer, they could run software that breaks the security built in Tails without your knowledge. To protect from such attacks while you are away from your computer, Tails 6.0 ignores any USB device that is plugged in while your screen is locked." These and additional features are covered in the release announcement. Download: tails-amd64-6.0.img (1,359MB, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: Tails 5.13 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project has added a few new tools to the distribution in Tails 5.13, including the cURL downloading program which will run over the Tor network by default. Encryption for persistent storage has also been upgraded. "Add curl, a command line tool to download over HTTPS, FTP, and other protocols. curl can be useful for online investigations as an alternative to wget. Everything you do with curl goes through the Tor network. If you want to use curl on a local network, use /usr/bin/curl instead. Use LUKS2 by default for all new Persistent Storage and LUKS encrypted volumes. LUKS2 provide stronger cryptography by default. We will provide a migration plan from LUKS1 to LUKS2 for existing Persistent Storage in Tails 5.14 (early June). Update Tor Browser to 12.0.6." Distribution Release: Tails 5.8 |
Version 5.8 of Tails (The Amnesic Incognito Live System), a Debian-based live DVD/USB that attempts to provide complete Internet anonymity for the user, is now available. Although the new version continues to be based on Debian 11, it brings some surprising changes, including improved persistence features as well as Wayland as a replacement of X.Org: "Tails 5.8 is the most important release of Tails in years. It includes both major redesign of existing features, important usability improvements, and hardened security. After 2 years of hard work, we are extremely proud to present you a complete redesign of Persistent Storage. Persistent Storage hasn't changed much since its first release in 2012 because the code was hard to modify and improve. But we learned from users that Persistent Storage could do a lot more for you if it had more features and was easier to use: you don't have to restart any more after creating Persistent Storage or each time you activate a new feature; you can change the password of Persistent Storage from this new application; you can choose to create Persistent Storage directly from Welcome Screen, if you don't have one already." Distribution Release: Tails 5.0 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release, Tails 5.0, is the first version of the distribution to be based on Debian 11. "We are especially proud to present you Tails 5.0, the first version of Tails based on Debian 11 (Bullseye). It brings new versions of a lot of the software included in Tails and new OpenPGP tools. We added Kleopatra to replace the OpenPGP Applet and the Password and Keys utility, also known as Seahorse. The OpenPGP Applet was not actively developped anymore and was complicated for us to keep in Tails. The Password and Keys utility was also poorly maintained and Tails users suffered from too many of its issues until now. Kleopatra provides equivalent features in a single tool and is more actively developed." Additional information is provided in the project's release announcement. Tails is provided via two separate downloads for DVD and thumb drives. Download (pkglist): tails-amd64-5.0.img (1,218MB, signature, torrent), tails-amd64-5.0.iso (1,208MB, signature, torrent). |
