Chris Kawalek has announced the availability of the release candidate for Oracle Linux 7, a distribution rebuilt from source code of the recently released Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7: "It's an exciting day for the Oracle Linux team because the Oracle Linux 7 release candidate is now available for download from Oracle Technology Network." Although the release announcement doesn't contain any information about the release, the Oracle Linux 7 download page tell us about the Linux kernel used in the release: "The early development builds of Oracle Linux 7 are provided for testing purpose only. Oracle Linux 7 includes two kernels: the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 Update 2 (default kernel); the Red Hat compatible kernel." The earlier Oracle Linux 7 beta release notes, published in April 2014, cover the product in some details, but they have yet to be updated to include information about this release candidate. Interested testers should head for this page to register and account and to download the "Server" edition of the distribution. |

About Oracle Linux
Oracle Linux is an enterprise-class Linux distribution supported by Oracle and built from source packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Some of the special features of Oracle Linux include a custom-build and rigorously-tested Linux kernel called "Oracle Unbreakable Kernel", tight integration with Oracle's hardware and software products including most database applications, and "zero downtime patching" - a feature that enables administrators to update the kernel without a reboot.

Distribution Release: Oracle Linux 9.3 |
Simon Coter has announced the release of Oracle Linux 9 Update 3, an updated build of Oracle's distribution built from the just-released Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.3: "Oracle Linux 9 Update 3 for the 64-bit Intel and AMD (x86_64) and 64-bit Arm (aarch64) platforms is now generally available. This release continues to be application binary compatible with the corresponding Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 Update 3 release, as has been the case since the first release in 2006. Oracle Linux 9 Update 3 ships with the newest Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 7 Update 2 (UEK R7U2) and Red Hat Compatible Kernel (RHCK) packages. Oracle Linux now supports automatic reboot of systems after patches are installed through DNF. With enhanced DNF, automatic reboot with different options (never, when-changed, when-needed) can speed-up patch management operations. The enhanced DNF utility introduced two new options: dnf leaves - to list the installed packages that aren't required by any other installed packages; dnf show-leaves - to list newly installed leaf packages and packages that have become leaves after a transaction." Distribution Release: Oracle Linux 9.2 |
Simon Coter has announced the release of Oracle Linux 9 Update 2, the latest stable version of Oracle's distribution built from the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.2 source code but optionally using a custom-compiled "Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK)": "The latest releases of Oracle Linux enhance the user experience across on-premises, cloud and edge deployments, with a focus on operational consistency and improved efficiency, to accelerate time-to-market for critical infrastructure assets. Oracle Linux now supports offline upgrades. Offline upgrades can help protect a system during upgrades by performing package installations after a reboot and before libraries that might be affected by package updates have loaded. With this enhancement, running services won't be impacted by operating system updates. With offline upgrades, DNF does not apply the updates directly, but it notifies the systemd process that updates need to be applied."
