Puppy Linux 5.6 "Slacko" edition, a small and fast distribution built from and compatible with Slackware's binary packages, has been released: "This is an improved version of the successful Slacko 5.5. The biggest enhancement in this version is full support of the f2fs filesystem. Slacko 5.6 has many improvements due to the heavy development of the Woof build system and the many bugfixes to the Slacko base packages (independent from Woof). Lots of packages have been updated for the 5.6 series including but not limited to the following: improved SFS Manager, Updates Manager, improved graphics support, updated ffmpeg-2.0 and supporting programs including Pmusic and Mplayer, Abiword-2.9.4 and geany-1.23.1, Sylpheed-3.3.0, Firefox ESR, plus many other updated programs. Slacko 5.6 is available with a choice of kernels, 3.4.52 (with f2fs patch) compiled for processors that do not support PAE, and 3.10.5 for processors that do." About Puppy Linux
Puppy Linux is yet another Linux distribution. What's different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full-featured. Puppy boots into a ramdisk and, unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, it loads into RAM. This means that all applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any USB memory device, CDROM, Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy disks, internal hard drive. It can even use a multisession formatted CD-RW/DVD-RW to save everything back to the CD/DVD with no hard drive required at all.

Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 6.3 "Slacko" |
Barry Kauler has announced the release of a new version of the Puppy Linux distribution. Puppy Linux provides users with a lightweight, installable live CD which strives to be easy to use. The new release, Puppy Linux 6.3, is built from Slackware packages and is available in 32-bit and 64-bit builds. "It has been awhile since the last announcement of an official release of Puppy Linux, 6.0.3 'Tahrpup', starting with 6.0 in October 2014. Mick Amadio, the coordinator for Puppy built from Slackware 14.1 binary packages, has brought Puppy to a new release, version 6.3. This is distinct from Puppy 6.0.x, which is built from Ubuntu Trusty Tahr binary packages, coordinated by Phil Broughton. Mick coordinated Puppy 5.7.x which is also built with Slackware packages. For the first time, Puppy is released in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions." Further information on the new Puppy Linux release can be found in the project's release announcement. There are also release notes for the 32-bit and 64-bit builds. Download: slacko64-6.3.0.iso (234MB, MD5). |

Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.7 "Precise" |
Bary Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.7 "Precise" edition, a minimalist and fast distribution featuring the JWM window manager and compatible with Ubuntu 12.04 packages: "This is going to take everyone by surprise. I decided that 5.7beta2 is pretty good, so haven't bothered with an RC. Here is a short announcement. Another pup in the Precise series! This pup comes in two flavours, one for older hardware and/or those on dial-up Internet, the other for those with relatively modern hardware. The 'retro' flavour is an upgrade path for those who have used our 'Wary' Puppy, that targeted older PCs and analog modem dial-up - unlike most other Linux distributions, it continues to support a wide range of analog winmodems. It also has two web browsers, SeaMonkey and Opera, the latter preferred for PCs with less than 256 MB RAM." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.6 "Precise" |
Bary Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.6 "Precise" edition, a minimalist distribution and live CD featuring the JWM window manager and built from Ubuntu 12.04 binary packages: "It's out! Our latest and greatest Puppy. Relative to Precise Puppy 5.5, this latest pup brings some exciting new features, including a new X.Org video wizard (with forced-reboot recovery mechanism), new non-PAE 3.2.44 kernel with lots of analog modem drivers (making this an excellent pup for those still on dial-up Internet), many more applications internationalized, many applications upgraded, lots of bug fixes, and so on. Plus, a huge number of fixes and improvements at the infrastructure/system level. In all, a great new version of the Precise series." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.5 "Precise" |
Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.5 "Precise" edition, a small distribution built from and compatible with Ubuntu 12.04.2 binary packages: "Well, time marches on and Ubuntu have released their second build of 'Precise Pangolin', 12.04.2. Precise Puppy 5.5 is built from 12.04.2 DEBs, but of course it is extremely important to understand with Puppy Linux that our use of the binary packages of another distro is only a convenience for us, to obtain binary compatibility, hence compatibility with that distro's package repositories -- in all other respects, from the lowest levels of the infrastructure upward, Puppy is unique. There have been many bug fixes and improvements at the Woof level since Precise 5.4.3 was released, plus many package fixes and upgrades. Enough to warrant the number jump to 5.5." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.5 "Wary", "Racy" |
Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.5 "Wary" and "Racy" editions, special Puppy builds targeting (not only) older computer systems: "Wary, our edition of Puppy for older computers, has now reach version 5.5 (along with Racy, that we think of as 'Wary on steroids', intended for not-so-old hardware). Most of the system libraries and some major applications have not been upgraded since 5.3, but a lot of smaller applications and utilities have, notably those created 'in house' by our very enthusiastic developers. What really has progressed significantly since 5.3 is the Woof infrastructure, bringing a plethora of bug fixes and enhancements. These improvements have made it imperative to release a new Wary (and Racy). Note that Wary 5.5 has the same old 2.6.32.59 kernel (configured for uniprocessor i486 CPU)." It is all-puppy right through, with the advantage of binary compatibility with Slackware 14.0 and access to the Slackware package repositories. Changes: significant improvements in using the Aufs layered file system; improved automatic detection and configuration of analog and 3G modems; Samba printing issues resolved; the X.Org wizard has improved detection and configuration options; many improvements and bug fixes for boot-up and shut-down scripts...." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.4 "Precise" |
Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.4 "Precise" edition, a small Linux distribution built from Ubuntu 12.04.1 and compatible with Ubuntu 12.04 DEB packages: "This is it, the very first official release of Precise Puppy. Precise Puppy is built from Ubuntu 'Precise Pangolin' 12.04.1+ binary DEB packages, hence has binary compatibility with Ubuntu and access to the vast Ubuntu package repository. Couple that with Puppy's tiny size, speed and ease of use, and this is one incredible pup. It is assigned version 5.4 to indicate its position relative to the other puppies, such as Wary 5.3 and Slacko 5.3.3 (5.4 coming soon). A lot of work has happened at the 'Woof level' since the release of Wary 5.3 in April 2012 - of particular importance to Precise are the many enhancements to the Puppy Package Manager (PPM)." Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.3.3 "Slacko" edition, an updated version of the lightweight distribution compatible with Slackware Linux 13.37: "Puppy Linux 5.3.3 'Slacko' is an updated release of the recent 5.3.1. It has binary compatibility with Slackware Linux 13.37, which simply means that it is a Puppy built with packages from the Slackware, Salix and Slacky repositories. The main variant has been upgraded with Linux kernel 3.1.10 compiled with Aufs layered file system support, in the typical Puppy manner. There is also a PAE variant to cater for machines with large amounts of RAM. Both ISO images have SCSI boot support. The SeaMonkey 2.9.1 suite is the default browser and email suite but Firefox, Chromium, Opera, Netsurf, Iron, Dillo and Links are only a few clicks away." Here is the full release announcement. Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.3 "Wary", "Racy" |
Barry Kauler has announced that newly updated releases of "Wary" and "Racy" editions of Puppy Linux, targeting older computers, are ready and available for download: "Wary Puppy 5.2.2 was released on 18 November 2011 (also Racy Puppy made his début). Since then, there has been the usual feverish pace of development. We now have a significant upgrade, hence the version jump from 5.2.x to 5.3. Wary Puppy is our build of Puppy Linux targeting older hardware. Racy Puppy made a début at the previous release (5.2.2) and is 'Wary on steroids' -- identical except with later X.Org and kernel, to suit more recent hardware. Version 5.3 has a fairly small number of application upgrades, however there are fundamental changes at the infrastructure level, that is, the 'Woof' level - in particular, pervasive support for internationalization, plus a multitude of bug fixes. There are now 'langpacks' available for many languages." Here is the full release announcement. Download: wary-5.3.iso (137MB, MD5), racy-5.3.iso (113MB, MD5).

The main version has kernel 2.6.37.6 compiled with Aufs, layered file system support, in the typical Puppy manner. There is also a PAE_HIGHMEM version to cater for machines with large amounts of RAM. Both ISO images have SCSI boot support. The Seamonkey suite is the default browser and email suite, but Firefox Aurora, Chromium, Opera, Netsurf, Iron, Dillo and Links are only a few clicks away. This is a minor upgrade and bug-fix release of Wary 5.2. Although if you look in the release notes you will might not think it so 'minor'. Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.3 "Slacko" |
Here comes a new edition of Puppy Linux: "Slacko Puppy". As the name suggests, it is a distribution which maintains binary compatibility with Slackware Linux and which is pre-configured to access some of the more popular Slackware package repositories. From the release notes: "Puppy Linux 5.3 'Slacko' is a child, or better a pup, of Barry Kauler's Woof build system. It has binary compatibility with Slackware 13.37 which means that it is a Puppy built with packages from Slackware, Salix and Slacky repositories. The main version has kernel 2.6.37.6 compiled with Aufs and layered file system support. Some new features of Slacko are a rebuilt GtkDialog, a program which allows Bash scripts to run in GUI. A showcase of this are Pmusic and Pequalizer, tiny applications to organise and play your music collection. Slacko Puppy introduces Frisbee Network Manager to connect wirelessly. There is also Simple Network Setup and Network Wizard to offer choice." Download: slacko-5.3-MAIN.iso (124MB, MD5).

Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.2 "Wary" |
Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.2 "Wary" edition, a small, fast and very light distribution designed for old and low-resource computers: "This is a massive upgrade relative to the 5.1.x series. All of the base packages were recompiled in T2. Certain choices were made in T2 with the plan of seamless upgrading from X.Org 7.3 to 7.6 - that is, the default Wary system has X.Org 7.3, but it is planned that Wary can be upgraded to X.Org 7.6 by installation of a single PET package, and all applications will work before and after. This required some very careful configuration. The idea is to 'have our cake and eat it too' - X.Org 7.3 for old hardware, easy upgrade to 7.6 for newer video hardware. The plan actually seems to be working. As usual, huge changes yet only a small version-number change. Many bug fixes, upgrades, new packages." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.2.8 |
Larry Short has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.2.8, a small and fast desktop distribution built from scratch and compatible with Ubuntu binary packages: "Lucid Puppy is our edition of Puppy Linux that is built from Ubuntu binary packages, hence has compatibility with, and access to, the vast Ubuntu package repositories. Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 is the fastest and friendliest Lucid yet. It is the fastest because it is the first Lucid to use the C and FFmpeg libraries optimized for i686 computers rather than the older i386 computers. Lucid 5.2.8 has also received a thorough going-over under the hood. There is new and updated firmware and drivers for many devices and the hardware detection and configuration routines have been extensively tested and enhanced." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.1.3 "Wary" |
Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.1.3 "Wary" edition, a mini-distribution targeting old and low-resource computers: "Wary is our flavour of Puppy that targets older hardware. Version 5.1.3 is mostly bug fixes and minor upgrades to 5.1.2. There have been some significant improvements at the Woof level, such as a close-box on desktop drive icons and faster boot-up. New applications: Default Applications Chooser, Urxvtset. New utilities: picscale, pngoverlay, yad. I decided to stay with SeaMonkey 1.1.18, as 2.2 has a badly broken Composer module. Also, 1.1.18 is smaller and better suited to older hardware -- FlashBlock and AddBlock plugins are included to suit those on dial-up. A couple of projects that have been upgraded in Wary and are worthy of special mention: BaCon and gtkdialog. BaCon is a superb BASIC compiler, and gtkdialog provides sophisticated GUIs for shell scripts." The release announcement. Download: wary-5.1.3.iso (121MB, MD5).

Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.1.2 "Wary" |
Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.1.2 "Wary" edition, a lightweight distribution specifically designed for running on old and low-resource hardware: "I was thinking of this release as a bug-fix release of 5.1.1, but when I started to tally the changes, I realised that there are a lot and probably I should have bumped the version to 5.2! Wary 5.1.2 is the latest of the Wary series of Puppy Linux that focuses on supporting older hardware. The emphasis is on incremental improvements and bug fixes rather than quantum changes, and 5.1.2 has many bug fixes, improvements and upgrades relative to 5.1.1, many more than you might expect from a sub-minor version increment. Built from the latest Woof, there are major improvements with hardware detection, some new helpful system-level GUIs, and 'fido' non-root user account is introduced (for experimenters only at this stage)." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.2.5 |
Larry Short has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.2.5: "Lucid Puppy is our official flagship Puppy Linux release. Version 5.2 was released on January 6th and since then the team has been feverishly developing the next version -- and it has now arrived! Lucid Puppy 5.2.5 is the most leading-edge Lucid ever. It has Bash 4.1.0, Syslinux 4.03, and e2fsprogs 1.41.14, the latest from Ubuntu 'Natty'. It now has JWM 500, up from 493. Gnumeric 1.10.13 is a necessity because a forum member had posted a bug to Gnumeric that is corrected in 1.0.13. Lucid 5.2.5 uses the Woof of February 28 replacing the Woof of November 28 for three months of progress in Woof development. All of the favorite Puppy programs are there in their latest versions." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.1 "Wary" |
Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.1 "Wary" edition, a small, fast and light distribution designed for older hardware: "Wary Puppy 5.1 has been released. Wary Puppy is our Puppy Linux variant that targets support for older hardware, especially in the areas of video and analog modem dial-up. Wary Puppy 5.1 is a bug-fix and minor upgrade of Wary 5.0. The default kernel is now the long-term supported 2.6.32.28. The PET package repository is still small but is growing, with many major applications added to it. For a 'minor upgrade', rather a lot of applications have been upgraded, as well as one new one, the 'Wcpufreq' CPU frequency scaling tool, added. There have been numerous tweaks in the underlying infrastructure." Read the release announcement and check out the more detailed release notes for more information. Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.2 |
Larry Short has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.2, an independent, minimalist Linux distribution for the desktop. From the release notes: "To create Lucid Puppy 5.2 we began with the popular Lucid Puppy 5.1.1. We then upgraded, updated, and/or improved all of the main programs as well as many of the other programs in the menu and system. We have incorporated numerous improvements from the latest version of Barry Kauler's Puppy builder, Woof. We have refined operation throughout. The first thing up is a very tidy Quickset dialog to accept or change video resolution, time zone, language, locale and keyboard. Next up could be the browser installer with browser default allowing you to change which one you use as the default. And then there's Quickpet with as much good stuff as a Swiss army knife." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.0 "Wary" |
Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux "Wary" edition, a distribution for older hardware. Despite the name, this is NOT an Ubuntu-based distribution, but an independently developed distro with support for installing packages from Ubuntu repositories. From the release announcement: "Puppy Linux 'Wary' is a parallel development to our other flagship Puppy, Luci Puppy, but with a different target market - older hardware. Puppies built with recent Linux kernel and X.Org may not work properly on older computers. In particular, some analog dial-up modem drivers cannot be compiled with recent kernels. Another major area is old video hardware not working with latest X.Org drivers. Wary is built with an old kernel (currently 2.6.31.14) and X.Org 7.3 so as to provide better drivers for the older hardware. However, Wary is in all other respects at the leading-edge like the other puppies, with recent applications, and support for all modern peripherals." Download: wary-500.iso (124MB, MD5).

Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 3.01 |
Barry Kauler has released Puppy Linux 3.01, a bug-fix update to the earlier Puppy 3.00: "Puppy version 3.01 released. Puppy 3.01 is a bug-fix upgrade of 3.00. If you are currently using 3.00 (or have tried to use 3.00 and have encountered a show-stopper bug), please read the blog first to find out if your particular problem has been addressed -- if not, it may be addressed in 3.02. The purpose of 3.01 is simply to fix the most urgent bugs and niggles in 3.00, not apply any major changes or package upgrades. This Puppy (3.00 and 3.01) is a massive upgrade from the previous (v2.17.1). I decided to aim for close binary compatibility with Slackware 12, with the objective of being able to install Slackware packages and have all or most of the required dependencies already in place. To that end, I used all the building block packages from Slackware 12, such as glibc 2.5, GCC 4.1.2 and GTK+ 2.10.13. Most of the libraries in Puppy are now from Slackware." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 2.11 |
Puppy Linux has been updated to version 2.11: "Puppy version 2.11 is out. Puppy 2.10 was the first Puppy to use LZMA compression for the 'pup_210.sfs' Squashfs file (the file that has all of the applications). We found however that it doubled the start-up time for each application, not very noticeable on a modern fast CPU, however very much a problem on older hardware. Thus, for 2.11 we have gone back to the standard GZIP compression. Version 2.11 is basically an improved 2.10. Apart from reverting to GZIP compression, this release has various bug fixes. There is also an 'xorgdrvrs' ISO that includes the extra X.Org basic video drivers." Read the release announcement and release notes for more information and a complete list of changes. The Puppy Linux development team has released a new edition of Puppy Linux - OneBone Puppy. Without any graphical applications, the entire distribution takes only 26.4 MB: "This is a play-thing, requested by a few people on the forum, and definitely not for the average user. In other words, Linux command line nerds only! OneBone does not have any X GUI applications. It does have Elinks web browser, Ytree file manager and MP text editor. The Lucent and SmartLink modem drivers are included. There are lots of text-mode applications out there and a very interesting flavour of Puppy could be created, based on this starting point." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 1.0.8 |
Puppy Linux 1.0.8 is out: "Puppy Linux version 1.0.8 is released. The biggest news item is the move from OSS to ALSA sound. A modified version of the alsaconf script is used to auto-configure the sound at boot-up. Puppy 1.0.7 has the Xvesa and X.Org X servers, but the latter is stuck on 'us' keyboard layout as the xkb component of X.Org is missing. Puppy 1.0.8 has a reduced xkb component that will now give correct keyboard layout and characters for the major countries. Lior Tubor has greatly improved the original Blinky taskbar network monitor, and we now have Lior's version 0.6 of Blinky...." Continued reading the release notes for more details. Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 1.0.7 |
Puppy Linux 1.0.7 has been released. What's new? "The big news is the move from the Xvesa Kdrive X server to the sophisticated X.Org X server (6.8.1). However, Xvesa is retained as a fallback. The Xorg Video Wizard has been written from scratch to give a very pleasant experience setting up and modifying X.Org. Gaim is upgraded from version 1.0.2 to 1.5.0. Puppy has the full set of plugins supplied with the source package. There is now a very nice little program to graphically view the sizes of directories and files, called Gdmap. Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 1.0.6 |
Puppy Linux has been updated to version 1.0.6: "Puppy Linux version 1.0.6 released. The two big items in this release are AbiWord 2.4.1 and the multisession DVD. With the 2.4 series, AbiWord has come of age. This is now professional wordprocessing, and Puppy enhances the pleasant experience with a large number of plugins included in the live CD, including grammar checker and equation editor. The Puppy multisession DVD-R is a very smooth experience. For the uninitiated, this boots up from DVD and saves everything back to DVD, no hard drive required at all." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 1.0.5 |
A brand new version of Puppy Linux is out: "Puppy version 1.0.5 is released. Although the version number has only changed from 1.0.4 to 1.0.5, the number and quality of new features are ...awesome! Many Puppy developers have created applications that are making their début, and those guys are justly proud of what has been created. Release notes, in no particular order: Mark Ulrich has developed DotPup Downloader, a brilliant GUI application for downloading and installing DotPup packages (for the uninitiated, Puppy has two package systems, DotPup and PupGet). Keenerd has developed WAG (Wireless Access Gadget), a superb GUI for configuring a wireless networks...." Find more details on the project's news page. Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 1.0.3 |
Puppy Linux has been updated to version 1.0.3: "Puppy version 1.0.3 released. We wanted a calendar and appointment program that is compact, easy to use, powerful and not tied to just one browser suite. We found ical. Puppy now has the full Bash, but Busybox Ash is still retained. Also, the full cp, mkdir and mv replace the Busybox versions. There is a great little file find application called Gtkfind. This complements the existing Gtkcat which is more of a disk/CD cataloguer. Puppy live-CD now has WvDial version 1.42." Read the complete release notes on the project's news page. Reviews: Getting to Know Puppy Linux |
DesktopLinux has published a review of Puppy Linux, a 60MB live CD distribution designed for older computers: "Using Puppy Linux brings back many memories of my early years using computers. Seeing Puppy Linux perform so well as a desktop Linux and taking up only 60 MB storage, one is reminded of how elegant programming used to be when computing used to be fun and useful with very little RAM and very little storage. ... Thanks to a small distribution like Puppy Linux, it is possible to set up a fully functional workstation with a motherboard, low-cost processor, power supply, case, 128 MB DRAM and either a 128 MB thumb drive or a CDROM drive, at a cost of about $150 (USD) without a monitor." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 1.0.2 |
Puppy Linux has been updated to version 1.0.2. From the release notes: "The main news for this release is the migration from the 2.4 kernel to the 2.6 series, specifically 2.6.11.7. A lot of under-the-hood work went into achieving this. I have upgraded AbiWord to 2.2.7. There are significant improvements, including improved stability, better MS Word import, and text flow around images. I have also included more plugins: import/export AbiWord documents compressed with bzip2, xsl-fo files, XHTML/HTML, WMF image support, and embedded editing of images (using mtPaint). The install-to-hard-drive script previously only created a boot floppy, but now GRUB installation on the hard drive is an option.... Download: puppy-1.0.2-mozilla.iso (60.9MB).

To ensure a correct upgrade, "If you have been testing version 1.0.1rc1, please edit /etc/puppyversion and change it from "101" back to "100", without on end of line. Also, as a precaution, please uninstall any packages installed by PupGet and completely erase all files in /root/.usr." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 1.0.0 |
Puppy Linux 1.0.0 has been released. From the release notes: "The big news item for this release is Scribus, version 1.2.1. This is the premier Linux desktop publishing application. It is really great and extremely easy to use. Of course, it is big, hence the size jump in the ISO files. The second big news item is VYM, an acronym for View Your Mind, version 1.6.0. This is a fascinating visual 'brainstorming' kind of outliner. I have removed Knowde, which was in earlier Puppies. TuxCards, another outliner, is not in the prebuilt ISOs but is in Unleashed. VYM is most intriguing - try it and give us your thoughts on the forum." Download: puppy-1.0.0-firefox.iso (58.4MB), puppy-1.0.0-mozilla.iso (61.9MB), puppy-1.0.0-opera.iso (55.8MB).

Development Release: Puppy Linux 1.0.0 Alpha |
The world's first live CD that allows users to save their data back to the CD has been born. It is called Puppy Linux and the first experimental alpha release is now available for download and testing: "So, how does it work? What you have to do is boot the PC with the multi-session CD inserted in the CD-burner drive -- thus, Puppy automatically knows which drive is the CD-burner, in case you have more than one CD/DVD drive. Then you use Puppy in the normal way. At shutdown, all the changed files in your home directory are saved back to CD. That's it. Next time you boot, all the personal files are restored." Certainly an interesting concept; find out more about it on this page. Download the ISO image from here: puppy-1.0.0alpha-firefox-multisession.iso (52.5MB).

Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 0.9.3 |

A new version of the small, but full-featured Puppy Linux live CD is out. From the release notes: "Puppy is now upgraded to the 2.4.27 Linux kernel. A lot more driver modules are now in Puppy, especially Ethernet card drivers, and the Ethernet/network wizard has been updated. Wireless networking drivers are also included, with a view to future support. There has been a major structural change in Puppy since v0.9.2. Previously, the file image.gz contained all of Puppy (and file vmlinuz is the Linux kernel operating system), however image.gz is now split into two files, image.gz and usr_cram.fs. The latter was previously inside image.gz. File usr_cram.fs is the compressed contents of the entire /usr folder...." Download version 0.9.3 from here: cd-puppy.iso (49.9MB).

Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 0.9.1 |
Puppy Linux 0.9.1 has been released. These are some excerpts from the release notes: Mozilla has been upgraded to version 1.7, with Skipstone as the GUI front end. Skipstone displays as version 0.8.4 however it is actually a hybrid of 0.8.4 and 0.9.3. The problem with Skipstone crashing when flipping tab-views is now fixed, however there are still some minor problems with tabbed-windows view. GTK applications in Puppy can now have anti-aliased fonts, courtesy of the libgdkxft package, and this is applied on a per-application basis. Font anti-aliasing is applied to Skipstone, Dillo (web browser), Amaya (HTML editor) and Ted (word processor). Download: cd-puppy.iso (49.0MB).

Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 0.8.0 |
A new version of Puppy Linux is out: "Puppy version 0.8.0 released. Version 0.7.9 was compiled on a Redhat 8.0 system, and this version is completely rebuilt based on the uClibc C library and a custom root filesystem. As this version is a complete rebuild, there may be quirks that weren't there before -- let me know. To bootup from the live-CD, the PC must have at least 128M RAM and must have a hard drive partition of type vfat, ext2/3 or reiserfs with at least 256M free space. ntfs partitions not yet supported. Puppy will create a file on the hard drive partition in which to store your personal data -- if Puppy is unable to find a suitable hard drive partition, Puppy will still run but your settings and files will not be saved." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 0.7.9 |
Puppy Linux, version 0.7.9, has been released: "Puppy version 0.7.9 is uploaded. The ISO file is 44.2M. Release notes: This version is still 'Red Hat based', meaning that Puppy requires a i686 class of CPU minimum. Minimum RAM requirement is 128M, except for the new lo-RAM USB installation. There is now a script that makes it very easy to install Puppy on a USB memory device, such as a Flash card. Furthermore, the script has an option of a lo-RAM installation, which will work on PCs with much less than 128M -- a minimum has not yet been tested. This script is in the 'Utilities' menu." Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 0.7.8 |
This is a new release from the Puppy Linux project: "Puppy live-CD version 0.7.8 uploaded. The ISO is now 41MB, and has the 'kitchen sink' in it, including Mozilla web browser and Scribus desktop publishing. Release notes: To run Puppy, just burn the cd-puppy.iso to CD and boot up your PC from the CD. This version of Puppy runs in a 48M ramdisk. Yes, Mozilla, Scribus, everything, the entire filesystem, is in the ramdisk, so no application has to ever be loaded off the hard drive. This means speed, speed, speed! Puppy so far has been developed on a Redhat 8.0 host, however I am now going to investigate rebuilding Puppy from scratch using Slackware 9.1. Slackware is designed to run on a minimum 586 class CPU. Also, I plan to design Puppy to run on PCs with very little RAM, as little as 32M. I'm reluctant to predict anything, as this is basically a fun project and I follow whims, but roughly this is what to expect in the next release." See the complete release announcement. Puppy Linux has been updated to version 0.7.4. From the release notes: "Upgrading from a previous version, delete .etc folder and .fvwm95rc. If you wish to connect to the Internet by dial-up analog modem, please unplug any Ethernet network cable, as Puppy senses its presence during boot-up. Puppy now has DHCP and Samba clients, so you can get onto a LAN and presumably the Internet (untested). Any feedback on configuring these most welcome!
