Canaima GNU/Linux is a Debian-based desktop Linux distribution from Venezuela. An updated build, version 3.1 based on "Squeeze", was released a couple of days ago. According to the project's website, the distribution is built in the spirit of social and technological policies leading to increased knowledge, innovation and technological independence in Venezuela and is meant for use in government organisations and communities of users. Some of the changes in this release include: software updates to LibreOffice 3.4, Cunaguaro 8.0 web browser with complete support for HTML 5, Turpial 1.6.6, Amigu 0.7.2; new applications, such as Ucumari - a control centre based on Ailurus Centro, Canaima Instalador - a new system installer written in Python.... Canaima GNU/Linux 4.0 has been released. Canaima is a government-sponsored Venezuelan distribution based on Debian's stable branch. Code-named "Kerepakupai" (named after the world's highest waterfall), this major new release incorporates many new features and updated applications, including the following: GNOME desktop environment with GNOME Shell 3.4; Linux kernel 3.2; X.Org 7.7 X window server; LibreOffice 4.0.1 office suite; Cunaguaro 22.0 web browser (a Firefox fork); Guácharo 17.0.5 mail client (a Thunderbird fork): GIMP 2.8 image manipulation program; a software centre; Canaima welcome screen based on huayra-bullets; Jockey hardware detector; Canaima dynamic desktop backgrounds; Inkscape 0.48 vector graphics editor; Python 2.7 and 3.2, Perl 5.14 languages. Canaima GNU/Linux is a Debian-based desktop Linux distribution sponsored by the government of Venezuela and widely deployed in the country's schools and public offices. Following the recent stable release of Debian GNU/Linux 7.0, the Canaima developers have launched a first development build of their distribution. Canaima 4.0 promises to revolutionise the computing by providing an operating system for the variety of devices on the market, including tablets and other touch-screen devices. This initial alpha release includes the GNOME 3.4.2 desktop, Linux kernel 3.2, X.Org 7.7, LibreOffice 4.0.1, the Cunaguaro 22.0 web browser (a fork of Iceweasel), GIMP 2.8, and Inkscape 0.48. Luis Alejandro Martinez Faneyth has announced the availability of the first "version candidata" (VC) of Canaima GNU/Linux 3.0, a Venezuelan distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux. This release represents a technological paradigm shift intended to improve the way that groups and communities involved in the process of creating free software interact. It also incorporates visual elements and innovative applications created by national communities in Venezuela. Some of the default new applications include: Deluge - a Python-based torrent downloader; emesene - a Python-based instant messenger client; Turpial - a Python-based Twitter and Identi.ca client developed locally; Exaile - a Python-based media player; LibreOffice - an office suite free of corporate restrictions; Canaima Notas - a bug reporting utility.... Canaima GNU/Linux is a Debian-based desktop distribution created mainly for use in Venezuela's government departments, but also available to general public as a desktop operating system. Version 2.0.1 was released yesterday. Some of its characteristics include: Modified bootsplash and desktop theme with Canaima artwork and logos; inclusion of OpenOffice.org 3.0.1 with a Spanish (Venezuela) dictionary; additional Impress templates and support for extended picture gallery; addition of OpenOffice.org Presenter; addition of XChat, a software package facilitating access to the distribution's IRC channel; updates to Freemind, an application for creating mind maps; update to OpenProj, project management software; update to the Pidgin instant messenger; update to Firefox 3.0.10 with support for Flash and GStreamer plugins. Development Release: Canaima GNU/Linux 2.0.1 RC1 |

The first release candidate for Canaima GNU/Linux 2.0.1 is now available for download. Canaima is a Venezuelan desktop Linux distribution designed primarily for the country's government and schools, based on Debian GNU/Linux. According to the release announcement, this is mostly a bug-fix and security update affecting around 400 upstream packages. These include some important upgrades to OpenOffice.org 3.0.1, Mozilla Firefox 3.0.8, Pidgin 2.5.5, FreeMind 0.8.1 and OpenProj 1.4 among others. Existing Canaima 2.0 installations can be upgraded with "aptitude". Testing will continue until 24 April and interested testers are invited to submit bug reports via the project's Trac infrastructure.
