Silvan Calarco has announced the release of openmamba GNU/Linux 2.0.10.1, an updated version of the project's independently developed distribution featuring the KDE desktop and using the RPM package management format: "The openmamba maintainer is happy to announce the immediate availability of the milestone2 2.0.10.1 release of the openmamba distribution. Features: KDE-based live desktop system for standard personal computers (Intel x86 compatible hardware); top applications include LibreOffice, Chromium, Amarok, Kaffeine, WINE, GIMP, Kopete, Audacity and K3b; 3D graphical desktop support with open and proprietary drivers; automatic hardware detection and configuration; NTFS read and write support using NTFS-3G; fixed disk installation interface." | openmamba GNU/Linux is a distribution for personal computers (Intel i686-compatible) that can be used on notebooks, desktops and servers. It works as an installable live CD, offering out-of-the box support for proprietary graphics drivers and wireless network cards, a variety of media codecs and 3D desktop with KDE. The distribution, which has roots in the discontinued QiLinux project, uses APT for RPM and Synaptic as its package management tools.

This new release adds the following new features: long-term Linux kernel 2.6.35.11; Linux kernel 2.6.37.6 can now be installed optionally by enabling the new milestone2-kernel channel; KDE desktop environment 4.5.5; network connections management is now based on NetworkManager in order to provide an integrated and simple solution for Ethernet, wireless, mobile broadband, ADSL (PPPoE) and more; 500+ software components updated." Silvan Calarco has announced that the third pre-release build of openmamba GNU/Linux 2.0, a general-purpose distribution for notebooks, desktop and servers, is ready for testing: "The third pre-release of openmamba milestone 2 is out with over 1,000 software updates. The system is based on Linux kernel 2.6.33.7 and provides a modern desktop environment that includes, among others, KDE 4.5.3, OpenOffice.org 3.2, Firefox 3.6.12, Amarok 2.3.2. The openmamba distribution is available for PC (x86 compatible) in English, Italian and Spanish languages and it is distributed as ISO images in live CD, live DVD and live games flavours. The ISO image can be burned on a CD/DVD media or installed on a USB pen drive and used to boot a live system and install it. The system is based on Linux kernel 2.6.31.13 and offers a modern desktop environment that includes KDE 4.4.4, OpenOffice.org 3.2, Mozilla Firefox 3.6.3, Amarok 2.3.1 and much more. Changes were made to the installation application from live media, as it now supports a 'cloned' installation of the live pen drive system and the configuration of a separate partition for the /home folder.
