OpenELEC
OpenELEC is a Linux-based embedded operating system built specifically to run Kodi, the open source entertainment media hub. The idea behind OpenELEC is to allow people to use their Home Theatre PC (HTPC) like any other device one might have attached to a TV, like a DVD player or Sky box. Instead of having to manage a full operating system, configure it and install the packages required to turn it into a hybrid media center, OpenELEC is designed to be simple to install, manage and use, making it more like running a set-top box than a full-blown computer.

Development Release: GNOME 4.0 Beta |
 |
The GNOME project has announced the availability of the first beta release of GNOME 4.0, a new major version of the popular open-source desktop environment. Some of the new features include unified look and feel across a wide range of devices, simplified user interface, and much improved front-end with focus on accessibility. Robert Storey has an in-depth review (with screenshots) in First Look at GNOME 4 - the Future of Portability: "One glance at the following screenshot and I think that all will agree that the GNOME developers have really outdone themselves this time. It's obvious that they've given the whole 'desktop' metaphor a complete rethink. Gone are menus, icons, task bars, minimize and maximize buttons, the archaic Start button, wallpapers or even a command prompt. Rather, we are presented with a pleasant default blue screen (note that the color is non-configurable). It is the bold simplicity of this approach that makes GNOME 4 so powerful. Read the rest of this exclusive special report to find out more about the improvements in GNOME 4 and to see some early screenshots of the brand-new desktop.
