Distribution Release: Tails 5.13 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project has added a few new tools to the distribution in Tails 5.13, including the cURL downloading program which will run over the Tor network by default. Encryption for persistent storage has also been upgraded. "Add curl, a command line tool to download over HTTPS, FTP, and other protocols. curl can be useful for online investigations as an alternative to wget. Everything you do with curl goes through the Tor network. If you want to use curl on a local network, use /usr/bin/curl instead. Use LUKS2 by default for all new Persistent Storage and LUKS encrypted volumes. LUKS2 provide stronger cryptography by default. We will provide a migration plan from LUKS1 to LUKS2 for existing Persistent Storage in Tails 5.14 (early June). Update Tor Browser to 12.0.6." |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release, Tails 5.11, introduces zRAM for increasing memory capacity which should allow for longer sessions. "Tails 5.11 is out. New features: Tails now uses the zRAM Linux kernel module to extend the capacity of the computer's memory; you can run more applications or use your session for longer periods of time; Tails will handle more load before freezing and become slow more progressively; you can record screencasts using the integrated feature of GNOME, we configured this feature to allow unlimited screencasts. Changes and updates: update Tor Browser to 12.0.4; update Thunderbird to 102.9.0; redesigned the unlocking section of the Welcome Screen. Known issues: none specific to this release. Distribution Release: Tails 5.8 |
Version 5.8 of Tails (The Amnesic Incognito Live System), a Debian-based live DVD/USB that attempts to provide complete Internet anonymity for the user, is now available. Although the new version continues to be based on Debian 11, it brings some surprising changes, including improved persistence features as well as Wayland as a replacement of X.Org: "Tails 5.8 is the most important release of Tails in years. It includes both major redesign of existing features, important usability improvements, and hardened security. After 2 years of hard work, we are extremely proud to present you a complete redesign of Persistent Storage. Persistent Storage hasn't changed much since its first release in 2012 because the code was hard to modify and improve. But we learned from users that Persistent Storage could do a lot more for you if it had more features and was easier to use: you don't have to restart any more after creating Persistent Storage or each time you activate a new feature; you can change the password of Persistent Storage from this new application; you can choose to create Persistent Storage directly from Welcome Screen, if you don't have one already." Distribution Release: Tails 5.4 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based Linux live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release, Tails 5.4, introduces an updated kernel with newer hardware support, along with some kernel-related security hardening. This release also disables forced HTTPS connections to make it easier for users to connect to wi-fi networks where a sign-in is required. "Harden several aspects of our Linux kernel. Disable HTTPS-only mode in the Unsafe Browser to make it easier to sign in to Wi-Fi networks. Update Tor Browser to 11.5.2. Update tor to 0.4.7.10. Update the Linux kernel to 5.10.136. This should improve the support for newer hardware: graphics, Wi-Fi, and so on. It will also fix an important vulnerability. For more details, read our changelog." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement. Tails offers separate download images for DVD and USB thumb drives. Distribution Release: Tails 5.0 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release, Tails 5.0, is the first version of the distribution to be based on Debian 11. "We are especially proud to present you Tails 5.0, the first version of Tails based on Debian 11 (Bullseye). It brings new versions of a lot of the software included in Tails and new OpenPGP tools. We added Kleopatra to replace the OpenPGP Applet and the Password and Keys utility, also known as Seahorse. The OpenPGP Applet was not actively developped anymore and was complicated for us to keep in Tails. The Password and Keys utility was also poorly maintained and Tails users suffered from too many of its issues until now. Kleopatra provides equivalent features in a single tool and is more actively developed." Additional information is provided in the project's release announcement. Tails is provided via two separate downloads for DVD and thumb drives. Download (pkglist): tails-amd64-5.0.img (1,218MB, signature, torrent), tails-amd64-5.0.iso (1,208MB, signature, torrent). |

Distribution Release: Tails 4.25 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release is Tails 4.25 introduces a number of package updates for key components. It also features a backup utility to copy important files in persistent storage to a thumb drive. "We added a utility to make a backup of the Persistent Storage to another Tails USB stick. This utility automates the process described until now in our documentation on making a backup of your Persistent Storage, which used the command line. It's pretty basic and we still want to do something better in #7049, but we didn't want to wait more because we know that backups are a big issue for our users. External Hard Disk - we added a new entry called Tails (External Hard Disk) to the GRUB boot loader. Changes and updates: update Tor Browser to 11.0.2; update Tor to 0.4.6.8; add a shortcut to restart Tails when the Unsafe Browser was not enabled in the Welcome Screen; add a link from the error screen of the Tor Connection assistant to our documentation on troubleshooting connecting to Tor." Additional details can be found in the release announcement. Download: tails-amd64-4.25.iso (1,129MB, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: Tails 4.22 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release introduces a number of polishing touches to the user interface. In particular, the system does a better job of checking to see if a Tor connection is possible and is more forgiving of slow network connections. "Reduce the timeout that determines whether we can connect to Tor at all from 30 seconds to 10 seconds. Increase the timeout to start Tor entirely from 120 seconds to 600 seconds. Tor Connection now fails quicker when it's impossible to connect to Tor, while being more robust on slow Internet connections. Allow trying again to connect to Tor from the error screen. Unsafe Browser: Stop restarting Tor when exiting the Unsafe Browser. Only mention the Persistent Storage in the Unsafe Browser warning when there is already a Persistent Storage. Others: Make sure that automatic upgrades are downloaded from a working mirror." Additional information can be found in the release announcement for Tails 4.22. Distribution Release: Tails 4.20 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release, Tails 4.20, introduces a new way to connect to the Internet using the Tor Connection Assistant. "Tails 4.20 completely changes how to connect to the Tor network from Tails. After connecting to a local network, a Tor Connection assistant helps you connect to the Tor network. This new assistant is most useful for users who are at high risk of physical surveillance, under heavy network censorship, or on a poor Internet connection: It protects better the users who need to go unnoticed if using Tor could look suspicious to someone who monitors their Internet connection (parental control, abusive partner, school or work network, etc.). It allows people who need to connect to Tor using bridges to configure them without having to change the default configuration in the Welcome Screen. It helps first-time users understand how to connect to a local Wi-Fi network. It provides feedback while connecting to Tor and helps troubleshoot network problems. We know that this assistant is still far from being perfect, even if we have been working on this assistant since February." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: Tails 4.17 |
Version 4.17 of Tails (The Amnesic Incognito Live System), a Debian-based live image designed for anonymous browsing of internet websites, has been released. The new release mostly includes fixes for a smoother upgrade process, and upgrades key software packages. "This release fixes known security vulnerabilities. You should upgrade as soon as possible. Reliability improvements to automatic upgrades: Repair automatically the file system used during upgrades. Automatic upgrades were sometimes failing even after doing a manual upgrade because of an unclean file system. Resume automatically when the download of an upgrade fails. Other changes and updates. Update Tor Browser to 10.0.14. Update Thunderbird to 78.8.0. Update Tor to 0.4.5.7. Update GRUB to 2.04-16. Update some firmware packages. This should improve the support for some Wi-Fi interfaces, especially Intel, Broadcom, and Cypress interfaces."
