NordisKnoppix
NordisKnoppix was a version of Klaus Knopper's Knoppix, supporting Nordic and Baltic languages, and maintained by Conrad Newton. Presently, the supported languages include Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Faroese, Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian, Northern sami, Norwegian bokmål, Norwegian nynorsk, Swedish and US English, to the extent that Debian packages for these languages are available, and that they fit on the CD. Aside from the Nordic/Baltic language components, NordisKnoppix was the same as standard Knoppix.

Philip Newborough has announced the release of CrunchBang Linux 10 R20110207, a lightweight Debian-based distribution for the desktop: "CrunchBang 10 'Statler' has been in development since early last year. The first alpha release came out in March 2010 and several development builds have followed whilst Debian 'Squeeze' remained in testing. Now that 'Squeeze' has migrated from testing to stable, CrunchBang 'Statler' will also adopt the stable moniker. The new CrunchBang 10 'Statler' R20110207 images were built on Monday, 7th February 2011 using the stable Debian 'Squeeze' and CrunchBang 'Statler' repositories. Changes from the previous builds have been kept to a minimum. The changes that have been made include: Chromium browser (version 9) replaces Google Chrome stable; Debian Installer (GUI & text) replaces the previous Live Installer; other minor changes and bug fixes." Philip Newborough has announced the release of CrunchBang Linux 11, a lightweight Debian-based distribution with Openbox as the default desktop user interface, suitable for both new and older computers: "CrunchBang 11 'Waldorf' released. Debian 7 'Wheezy' was released on May 4th; now that Wheezy has migrated to the stable branch of Debian, this means that Waldorf is the new stable CrunchBang release. To acknowledge this occasion, I have rebuilt the Waldorf images. The new images are available now from the download page. For anyone unaware, Waldorf has been in development for well over a year and has seen numerous development releases. Philip Newborough has announced the availability of a new development build of CrunchBang, a lightweight Debian-based distribution featuring the Openbox window manager: "It has been approximately three months since the previous 'Waldorf' images were built, so I figured the time was right to upload some updated builds. To be honest, I was tempted to wait until Debian 'Wheezy' migrates to stable before updating the builds, but Debian being Debian (released when ready), it could mean waiting a week, a month, or even a year. Anyhow, the new images contain some fixes to the installer that affected installations performed using DVD media. Personally, I tend to install via a USB stick, so I had not come across the bug myself, until somebody else mentioned it. The bug appeared as an error message just before the GRUB install screen, where it asked the user to insert an additional disk." These new images were built to address an issue with the live session, whereby under certain conditions the live session would spawn two X sessions. Whilst this bug only affected live sessions and was not present once an installation had been performed, I still figured it was worth addressing to ensure any live users can more accurately evaluate the system, before performing an installation. Other changes have been kept to an absolute minimum and any existing Waldorf users should not need to perform a new installation, unless they wish to help with testing the install process." The updated images include the Debian installer 7.0 beta 2 release. The main bug fix in the installer that concerns CrunchBang is #683849. This bug affected a number of users and rendered the previous images as uninstallable. Other changes have been kept to an absolute minimum and any existing Waldorf users should not need to perform a new installation unless they wish to help with testing the install process. The only changes of minor note are: due to improvements and fixes applied upstream, the previous Compton/VLC workaround package is now rendered obsolete; some basic example templates have been included for Thunar; some depreciated syntax in the default Openbox menu...." This is a lightweight distribution with Openbox based on Debian's testing branch. From the release announcement: "Updated 'Waldorf' images are available now. A good few months have passed since the initial 'Waldorf' images were made available and during this time I received lots and lots of comments, suggests and bug reports. I have done my best to work my way through this feedback and make the necessary changes to improve Waldorf's out-of-the-box experience. What's changed: ARandR has replaced grandr as the default tool to help with configuring multi-screen set-ups; a new GUI app has been developed to help configure the login manager; an additional 486 image has been made available for use on PCs with a single processor not supporting PAE...." Philip Newborough has announced the availability of the first public testing build of CrunchBang Linux 11, a lightweight desktop distribution with Openbox, now based on Debian "Wheezy": "The first CrunchBang 11 'Waldorf' development builds are now available for testing. For anyone unaware, these are the first builds to be based on Debian 'Wheezy' sources. Wheezy is the current testing branch of Debian and therefore is likely to experience changes, bugs and breakages. These first builds are not recommended for anyone who requires a stable system, or is not happy running into occasional breakages. Of note, the following has changed: SLiM replaces the deprecated GDM; Chromium replaces Iceweasel; Compton replaces xcompmgr and Cairo Composite Manager; PulseAudio is now installed by default." Philip Newborough has released an updated set of CrunchBang Linux 10 "Statler" CD images, a lightweight Debian-based distribution featuring the Openbox window manager: "As previously discussed, I have updated the 'Statler' images. The new images do not constitute a new release, at least not for anyone who is content with using the previous 20111125 images. However, due to some concerns which were expressed over the default use of Backports packages, there are now two sets of images, 'stable' and 'backported'. The 'stable' images ship with Debian's stable kernel (2.6.32) and stable X.Org (7.5), while the 'backported' images ship with Linux 3.2 and X.org (7.6) and automatically track any packages that enter the Debian Backports repository. Both sets of images use backported versions of Iceweasel (10.0) and Geany (0.20). Also, GDM has been restored as the default display manager. These new images contain some significant changes since the last release. The main thing to have been removed/retired is the Xfce edition. I love Xfce and I thought about this long and hard, but I really want to concentrate on making CrunchBang give the best possible out-of-the-box Openbox experience possible. Besides, there are plenty of brilliant Xfce-based distributions available, and if you know what you are doing, installing Xfce under Debian is really not too difficult. CrunchBang Linux 9.04.01, an Ubuntu-based distribution featuring the lightweight Openbox window manager, is now available: "After a slight delay and a prolonged testing period, the final builds of CrunchBang Linux 9.04.01 are now available. As the version number suggests, it is based on Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope. As with all previous releases, 9.04.01 has been built from scratch using the Ubuntu MinimalCD. The builds were completed on the 6th July 2009 and contain all security and package updates available at that time. For the first time, CrunchBang Linux is available to download in both 32 and 64-bit builds. Other noticeable changes as a result of moving to the latest stable Ubuntu release include: much improved boot performance with faster start-up times; improved support for wireless cards; ext4 filesystem support."
