Devuan GNU+Linux
Devuan GNU+Linux is a Linux distribution forked from Debian in 2015. The project's primary goal is to provide a variant of Debian without the complexities and dependencies of systemd, an init system and services manager originally developed by Red Hat and later adopted by most other Linux distributions. Devuan's initial beta release was made available in April 2016, together with an upgrade path from Debian 7.0 "Wheezy" and a possibility to switch to Devuan from Debian 8.0 "Jessie". The distribution adopted Xfce as its default desktop.

Ben Gras has announced the release of MINIX 3.1.8, a very small, UNIX-like computer operating system based on a microkernel architecture and targetted primarily at embedded systems and low-power laptops: "MINIX 3.1.8 is released. Major features: new package management infrastructure: - pkgsrc and pkgin; UNIX Domain Socket support; multi-boot support; ext2 support; ACPI driver; full APIC mode including IO APICs; experimental AHCI support. Known issues: VirtualBox - MINIX 3.1.8 cannot be installed without hardware acceleration support (VT-x, AMD-V), workaround - see user's guide; VirtualBox 3.1 cannot boot MINIX, please use VirtualBox 3.2; some packman packages have not been ported to pkgsrc yet." |
| MINIX is a UNIX-like computer operating system based on a microkernel architecture. It is extremely small, with the part that runs in kernel mode in about 5,000 lines of source code, while the parts that run in user mode are divided into small, insulated modules which enhance system reliability. Originally designed as an educational tool, the latest versions of MINIX are also targetted at embedded systems and low-power laptops. By the project's own admission, MINIX is work in progress and is nowhere near as mature as BSD or Linux. It is released under a BSD-type licence.

Andy Tanenbaum has announced the release of MINIX 3.3.0, a major new version of the UNIX-like operating system based on a microkernel architecture - now also with support for the ARM processor: "We are pleased to present the MINIX 3.3.0 stable release. The major new features and improvements of this release include: the first release with ARM support, three Beagle targets are supported; experimental USB support for the Beaglebones (hubs and mass storage); cross-compiling for both ARM and x86 - the buildsystem is very portable; big source code cleanup - cleaner C types in messages, improved NetBSD compatibility, all MINIX-specific code moved to a top-level minix/ folder; updated packages overall - a big set is built now; and they are dynamically linked now; improved driver modularity...." Thomas Veerman has announced the release of MINIX 3.2.1, an updated version of the UNIX-like operating system based on a microkernel architecture: "The MINIX team is proud to announce the latest MINIX release, named 3.2.1, a year after the previous release, 3.2.0. 3.2.1 boasts significantly more polish again in terms of base-system expansion and cleanup, in areas such as userland utilities, libraries, the build system, but also drivers and kernel improvements, various performance improvements, and more. A detailed list: support for dynamically linked executables, also build shared versions of base system libraries; remove the use of Intel segments altogether, giving a performance boost while context switching; full new clean updated NetBSD build system import...." Thomas Veerman has announced the release of MINIX 3.2.0, a free and open-source operating system based on a tiny microkernel architecture: "We are pleased to announce the release of MINIX 3.2.0 today. It is a major upgrade from 3.1.8, being much more NetBSD-like than any previous version. With pkgsrc, the BSD compiler (Clang/LLVM), and the NetBSD C library, it will be much easier to port software to MINIX 3. Other changes include using ELF as the executable format, an asynchronous VFS, /proc file system, FUSE, and much more. Major Features: Clang is the default compiler (GCC is also supported); NetBSD C library; ELF is the default executable format; asynchronous, multi-threaded virtual file system (VFS) server; experimental SMP support; FUSE support; NetBSD password file format; NetBSD bootloader; smaller boot images (using gzip)...." Major features: userspace scheduling and a scheduling server; proper support for multiple Ethernet cards of the same type; bug fixes (such as workaround to run on recent KVM); debug features ('verbose' boot monitor variable, access to debug registers DR0-DR7 in kernel); boot monitor allows loading images larger than 16 MB; root partition size increased to 64 MB (and setup script can now more or less safely deal with root partitions with non-default sizes); buildsystem support for building MINIX with GCC; source tree reorganization and clean-up; new ports - Git, GCC updated to version 4.4.3; secondary FS cache layer in VM that uses all available memory, reducing I/O wait time a lot."
