Robert Gabriel has announced that the second alpha release of Kongoni GNU/Linux 1.12.3, a Slackware-based desktop distribution, is available for testing: "It took a while, but now the second alpha of Kongoni GNU/Linux is here. I've been working a lot to make sure that the installer (KSI) works right, taking into consideration that there were many issues with it. The main issue was the fact that you couldn't install the system if there wasn't any swap partition set up before, which had to be fixed. Besides working on KSI, we also moved up with the kernel and now Kongoni runs on 2.6.34. Of course you will find the same things built in, like Squashfs 4 with LZMA support, Aufs 2, Btrfs, Logfs, Nouveau and so on. Since the last release we have synchronized Kongoni with the stable version of Slackware 13.1." Read the complete release announcement for additional information. Distribution Release: Kongoni GNU/Linux 2011 |
Robert Gabriel has announced the release of Kongoni GNU/Linux 2011, a Slackware-based desktop distribution built exclusively from libre software: "I'm very happy to announce the stable release of Kongoni 2011 (code name 'Firefly'). Most bugs and glitches have been removed and we can say now that Kongoni is ready for the stable release. Some extensive work has gone into the live CD and initrd. We have moved to initramfs for the live CD, udev is used now and there is no limitation in space when creating the initramfs as we dropped dd and mkfs.ext2 in favor of cpio. This also should make the live CD a bit faster and much more reliable. KDE has been updated to version 4.6.5 due to some bug fixes, IceCat updated to version 5.0, Gnash updated to version 0.8.10-dev, BackInTime 1.0.8 added as a default backup tool and LibreOffice 3.4.1 is now available in the repository." Development Release: Kongoni GNU/Linux 2011 RC2 |
Robert Gabriel has announced the availability of the second release candidate for Kongoni GNU/Linux 2011, a Slackware-based desktop distribution and live CD containing strictly free software only: "Due to a major bug in the installer (KSI) RC2 had to be released. Thanks to a couple of bug reports regarding the impossibility of installing Kongoni 2011 RC release and some investigation in this matter, it turned out that KSI had a mistype, making KSI totally useless. This usually doesn't happen, but for some reason RC (my fault) went out with a unusable installer. The error/mistype has been corrected in KSI and also the partitioning and formatting of disks was improved. Now KSI uses PartitionManager to partition the disks. Formatting the partitions is now optional." Continue reading the release announcement for more details. Download: kongoni-2011-i486-rc2-firefly.iso (673MB, MD5).

Development Release: Kongoni GNU/Linux 2011 RC |
Robert Gabriel has announced the availability of the release candidate for Kongoni GNU/Linux 2011, a Slackware-based desktop distribution and live CD with KDE: "I'm very happy to announce the release candidate of Kongoni 2011 (Firefly). Since beta 2 a lot of bug fixes were done to this candidate, a lot of packages were migrated from Slackware and also brand new packages were added. There is a better accessibility support in KDE, Speech Dispatcher and eSpeak are installed by default in the live CD and also they were built against KDE Accessibility. KDE was updated to version 4.6.3 due to some bugs in the core of KDE and in some applications coming with KDE. Chromium was fully removed from the live CD and repository; apparently I didn't check if Chromium is FSF-compliant and it turns out that it is not. So now, the default web browser in Kongoni is IceCat which was upgraded to version 4.0.1." More details in the release announcement. Download: kongoni-2011-i486-rc-firefly.iso (673MB, MD5).

Development Release: Kongoni GNU/Linux 2011 Beta 2 |
Robert Gabriel has announced the availability of the second beta release of Kongoni GNU/Linux 2011 5.6, a Slackware-based desktop distribution containing exclusively "libre" software code: "After a couple of weeks of working in improving and resolving some important bugs and updating packages, 'Firefly' is ready for the second and hopefully the last beta of this release. KDE was updated to version 4.6.2 as also the kernel was moved to version 2.6.37.6-libre. For the moment, Kongoni will stick with the 2.6.37 kernel branch, as it seems very stable and fast. Besides KDE and the kernel, there was a bug found when using udisks. The problem was that no external USB disks were mounted by udisks, even if udisks and udev found them. This issue got fixed in beta 2 and now everything works at it should." Read the rest of the release announcement for more information. Download: kongoni-2011-i486-beta2-firefly.iso (694MB, MD5).

Development Release: Kongoni GNU/Linux 1.12.3 RC2 |
Robert Gabriel has announced the availability of the second release candidate for Kongoni GNU/Linux 1.12.3, a Slackware-based desktop-oriented operating system with a strong belief in being truly free software: "To start with the main changes in Kongoni, the top of the list has to be taken by GRUB2 replacing LILO. Yes, Kongoni now uses GRUB2 as the default boot loader and also has a very good OS detection setup. Now you can have dual or multi boot using Kongoni, very similar to how it works in Ubuntu/Debian/Fedora. Another major modification done to Kongoni is moving from the classic kernel found at kernel.org to the FSF kernel, which has removed all of the non-free firmware. Also removed form git repository any trace of non-free software and firmware. This means that there will be no Adobe Flash, no Radeon non-free firmware, no non-free codecs and so on. Everything is now open source or free...." Continue reading the release announcement for a full list of updates. Download: kongoni-1.12.3-rc2-i486.iso (663MB, MD5).

Development Release: Kongoni GNU/Linux 1.12.3 RC1 |
Robert Gabriel has announced the availability of the first release candidate for Kongoni GNU/Linux 1.12.3, a Slackware-based distribution for the desktop: "Finally I can release RC1 of Kongoni GNU/Linux 1.12.3. Since alpha 2 a lot of things have changed, a lot of things got added and the same removed. First of all, the kernel was upgraded to version 2.6.34.1, of course patched with Aufs and LZMA support for Squashfs 4. Removed Firefox and built and added Icecat 3.6.4, PIG was re-added, but also rebuilt and it comes with new icon theme, fully moved the git repository to gitorious.org and the build packages moved to SourceForge. Removed gtk-qt-engine and replaced it with kcm-gtk (gtk-qt-engine has some weird issues with Icecat/Firefox), added QtCurve package, flash-nonfree package (not installed by default), radeon-firmware (not installed by default), upgraded GParted to version 0.5.2...." Distribution Release: Kongoni GNU/Linux 1.12.2 |
A. J. Venter has announced the availability of Kongoni GNU/Linux 1.12.2, a free African GNU/Linux distribution based on Slackware with significant inspiration from the BSD architectures: "It is my pleasure to announce that Kongoni version 1.12.2, code-named Nietzsche, has been officially released. This marks the first official and stable release of the Kongoni GNU/Linux distribution after several development releases. The most significant Kongoni feature is its source-based software installation system (known as a ports tree), a feature that originated in the BSD UNIX world and remains a popular power-users tool on present-day BSD UNIXes, Apple's Mac OS X and source based GNU/Linux distributions. Kongoni, however, is not a source-based distribution. The distribution itself is shipped as binaries which work out of the box. The ports tree is used only for installing additional software."
