And we've updated some packages containing bug fixes - Digikam 1.1.0, ghostscript 8.71, kdebase-workspace 4.3.4-5 and wl-modules 5.60.48.36. The community is hard at work on translations, updated manual, and a couple of new utilities. I expect RC3 to be ready in a week or so. It should be the last RC before we go final with 8.5.' Distribution Release: SimplyMEPIS 8.5 |
Warren Woodford has announced the release of SimplyMEPIS 8.5, a beginner-friendly desktop Linux distribution with KDE 4, based on Debian GNU/Linux: "For SimplyMEPIS 8.5 we started with the stable Debian 'Lenny' core and then selectively introduced updated packages that make SimplyMEPIS 8.5 a more timely operating system. Specifically, 8.5 uses a 2.6.32 kernel for up-to-date hardware support. It has the new KDE 4.3.4 desktop, yet retains much of the familiar MEPIS/KDE look and feel, so users can slowly become familiar with the new features in KDE 4.3. The new MEPIS Welcome Center guides users through their first steps with MEPIS including finding documentation, connecting with the community, and optionally installing additional applications and language packs." Development Release: SimplyMEPIS 8.5 RC3 |
Warren Woodford has announced that the third release candidate for SimplyMEPIS 8.5 is ready for testing: "MEPIS has released SimplyMEPIS 8.5.00, RC3 of MEPIS 8.5, now available from MEPIS and public mirrors. We've updated the kernel to 2.6.32.10. The release notes from the Linux kernel team indicated that they have been hard at work making improvements. We have changed the live media to use isolinux. This gave us the opportunity to add a hardware exploration tool to the boot options. Also we've expended the number of languages that can be selected at live boot. Soon we expect to take advantage of this to build a larger international Live media release, that will have appropriate KDE localizations built-in. There have been a number of improvements to the MEPIS Assistants." See the remainder of the release announcement for additional notes. Development Release: SimplyMEPIS 8.5 Beta 2 |
Warren Woodford has announced the availability of the second beta release of SimplyMEPIS 8.5, a beginner-friendly Linux distribution based on Debian stable, but with updated KDE 4 desktop. From the announcement: "The rapid response of the Debian KDE team made it possible for us to recompile KDE 4.3.4 in time for this beta. And we were able to fix the perpetually problematic Python toolchain well enough that system-config-printer finally works. Also there have been numerous suggestions from the community; some are included now, and some will be in the next beta. The MEPIS artistic team made some tweaks to the theme graphics. To also improve the look, mepis-init has been changed to default to 24-bit depth display for most modern graphics drivers. We're being cautious about this change, since we don't want to make things worse for users with older graphics chips." Read the rest of the release announcement for additional notes. Warren Woodford reported on the progress in the 8.5 release cycle: 'This beta includes a 2.6.32 kernel that is one patch short of the final. The next beta will probably contain kernel 2.6.32.1. We still use KDE 4.3.2 but we're hoping we can leverage the dedicated efforts of the Debian KDE Team to update to a newer version soon. We've had a lot of input from users. We're trying to tweak 8.5 to reflect their suggestions and preferences. In particular, our thanks go out to the community members who designed and tested a new desktop theme for 8.5.'" Development Release: SimplyMEPIS 8.5 Alpha |
Warren Woodford has announced the availability of the first alpha build of SimplyMEPIS 8.5, a distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny", but with KDE 4.3.2 as the main desktop: "November 21 was the seventh anniversary of MEPIS Linux, so it seems fitting that Warren Woodford has uploaded the alpha release of MEPIS 8.5. Warren Woodford explained the rationale behind the 8.5 release: 'Many users have asked that we support the KDE 4.3 desktop, yet other users have asked that we continue to support KDE 3.5.10. So in the spirit of our ongoing updates, we are building 8.5, not as a replacement for 8.0, but rather as an alternative for those users who want KDE 4.3. We will continue to support 8.0 with KDE 3.5.10 in parallel with 8.5 and KDE 4.3.' The 8.5 alpha defaults to a 2.6.32-rc8 kernel." Read the release announcement for more details. Development Release: SimplyMEPIS 8.0 Beta 3 |
Warren Woodford has announced the third beta release of SimplyMEPIS 8.0: "The third beta of SimplyMEPIS 8.0 has been released for 32-bit and 64-bit processors. The only major change for this release is a switch to the recently released 2.6.27 kernel. Warren Woodford of MEPIS explains this unexpected move, 'In general, the 2.6.26 kernel was working well, but we knew of a couple of problems. The Intel e01000 series drivers needed to be updated and Aufs seemed to be a bit unstable. In 2.6.27 the Intel and kernel teams have addressed several Intel driver issues and, in my personal experience, Aufs seems to be stable again. As a bonus, 2.6.27 enhances support for IPv6, which we think will become more and more important during the life cycle of the 8.0 release.'" Here is the release announcement. Development Release: SimplyMEPIS 3.3 Test 1 |
The first development release of SimplyMEPIS 3.3, together with some changes in the distribution's versioning scheme, have been announced: "Warren has announced the availability of SimplyMEPIS 3.3-test01 at the usual mirror sites and from the MEPIS premium FTP site. For MEPIS Linux followers and fans, the name alone signals a change. MEPIS plans to do at least 2 major releases per year, therefore version numbers will no longer reference the year of the release. Many users have not understood the meaning of 'Beta' and 'RC' so test versions will be called 'test'. In response to user requests, SimplyMEPIS will continue to offer dual kernels to maximize support for both old and new hardware. The kernels for the upcoming release are 2.6.10 and 2.4.29. Version 3.3 is scheduled for final release around February 15." More details in the release announcement. Download: SimplyMEPIS-3.3.test01.iso (691MB).

Development Release: ProMEPIS 2005 Beta 4 |
This is the fourth beta of ProMEPIS 2005: "Warren has announced the release of Beta 04 of ProMEPIS Linux. It is available for test and evaluation at the usual mirror sites and from the MEPIS premium FTP site. A big change is the introduction of kernel 2.6.10, replacing the older kernel 2.6.7. The new kernel has many hardware and performance improvements, yet it comes at a price. MEPIS was slow to introduce a newer kernel due to instabilities caused by restrictive policy and code changes introduced by the kernel team after 2.6.7. The changes have raised the bar for Linux distro developers, because it is necessary to recode some third party drivers and abandon others, including the unfortunate loss of the Philips WebCam driver." In response to user requests, GAIM is now the default instant messenger client, Xchat is the IRC client, kdenetwork filesharing handles basic NFS share management, telnet client is included, and Guidedog manages IP routing. The Best Free Desktop Linux |
DesktopLinux.com has published a comprehensive, 8-page review of SimplyMEPIS 2004, with many screenshots: "SimplyMEPIS is the absolute masterpiece of desktop Linux distributions. SimplyMEPIS is usable immediately. It is easier to install than Microsoft Windows. This article shows how to add applications mastering a couple of commands. Using these commands, it is easy to keep SimplyMEPIS up-to-date. SimplyMEPIS is ready for prime time. Consider the value proposition for organizations. If a user's disk crashes, so long as the data in the home directory is backed up, the users can be up and running again on a new disk in less than 20 minutes. This is simply not possible with Microsoft Windows. Even in the case of a catastrophic hard disk failure, the user should be able to access and edit their data by booting directly off the SimplyMEPIS CD." The story starts here.

SimplyMEPIS 2004.01 Review |
Linuxgruven has published a new review of SimplyMEPIS 2004: "SimplyMEPIS 2004.01 is only the second major release of MEPIS, yet it already offers what I consider to be the best of desktop Debian. While it began as a one-man small distribution, the community and popularity surrounding MEPIS is growing in leaps and bounds. SimplyMEPIS has once again provided a well-configured, contemporary Linux desktop. With the commercialization of Linux increasing rapidly and the divide between Free and pay-for offerings widening, MEPIS reminds us of the 'good old days' of quality distributions unencumbered by restrictive licenses. In my opinion, everyone interested in Linux should try it." The full review with screenshots.

SimplyMEPIS 2004 RC2 Review |
Mepis Lovers has published a review of SimplyMEPIS rc2: "I intended to wait until the final release before reviewing Simply Mepis, but, The Distro's final shape is pretty much defined in rc2 and I think it's time to take a close look at what's going on... As SimplyMepis pushes towards the final release I continue to see marked improvements in both hardware compatibility and software function. Since I'm already quite impressed with the polish of rc2. I can't even imagine how the final will be. And as I write, SimplyMepis-2004rc3us has magically appeared on the Mepis server... Life is good." Read the full review with screenshots here.

Mepis 2004.05 Beta Review |
DesktopOS.com has published a review of Mepis 2004-05-b01: "I was reading on DistroWatch about Mepis 2003-10-02 and got the 2 CD set, loaded it and just went WOW! ... Mepis 2003 came SO CLOSE, but without patching the kernel I had problems doing the audio... so I waited... and then I got a hold of Mepis 2004-05-b01 and that was it, the look, the speed, the stability, and it took Audicity and ran with it! I really can not describe how I felt... NOW I could start working on switching totally over. This version took the Sword and BibleTime programs first time and ran great, K3B and K Audio Kreator solved the CD items, both found my CD drives, ripped and burned without ONE hiccup." Interview with MEPIS Linux founder: Warren Woodford |
TechDOT.com has interviewed Warren Woodford, the founder of the increasingly popular MEPIS Linux: "MEPIS is splitting into two versions, ProMEPIS and SimplyMEPIS. ProMEPIS will continue to be a leading edge version of Linux for technology enthusiasts and developers. SimplyMEPIS will back off from the leading edge and be a proven desktop for home, SOHO, and office users." On a related note, LWN has published a comparative review of five Linux live CDs, in which MEPIS gets the highest score: "Among all the distributions tested, MEPIS had the best hardware detection and the fastest boot time. Even my screen resolution was set accurately, and most of all no screen flickering. It was the only one able to configure my screen correctly.".

Spawn of Debian Faceoff: MEPIS Linux |
NewsForge has published a review of the latest release of MEPIS Linux: "MEPIS is a different type of distribution than I've seen before. As noted, it is almost a one-man operation. It's not a free distribution, like Debian, but the prices for it are so low that it almost qualifies. It's probably not the right choice for non-technical Linux newbies, but it's a great choice for those on a budget. MEPIS Linux is the best value for the money of any Linux distribution I've tried yet." The 2-page review starts here.

Linux Desktop Distro Shootout Part III: MEPIS Review |
OSNews has reviewed the latest release of MEPIS Linux: "I am really torn here. I am having fun playing with MEPIS. In fact, I haven't had this much pure fun tinkering with a distro in a long time. I also think that MEPIS is rapidly evolving into a force to be reckoned with. At the moment the MEPIS community is small but fierce, and growing fast. Warren is obsessed with quality and constantly hammering on the latest version of Debian to turn out a solid bleeding edge product. On the other hand, I can't afford to trust my day-to-day operation to a bleeding edge system. I just don't dare." The 2-page review starts here.

Review: MEPIS Linux 2003.06 |
NeoLink Computers reviews MEPIS Linux, a new Debian-based desktop Linux distributions: "After clicking the Install Mepis icon a wonderful GUI for the installation appeared. The GUI was extremely nicely designed. It had a look similar to Red Hat's installer where there are instructions on the left and the action buttons on the right. Each screen told you nice descriptions of what was about to happen and what options you have available. It walks you through each item very well. ... All in all, the install was painless. I don't know if I've ever had an install go that easily." See the complete review with a number of screenshots. (Disclaimer: MEPIS Linux is one of the sponsors of DistroWatch.com.)
