Klaus Knopper has released KNOPPIX 6.2, a new version of the popular Debian-based live CD/DVD with LXDE as the default desktop: "The current version 6.2 has been completely updated from Debian 'Lenny', 'Testing' and 'Unstable', and uses kernel 2.6.31.6 and X.Org 7.4. Microknoppix is a complete rewrite of the KNOPPIX boot system from version 6.0 and up, with the following features: high compatibility with its Debian base; accelerated boot procedure; LXDE as graphical environment - a very slim and fast desktop with extremely short start time and low resource requirements; amount of installed software greatly reduced in the CD edition; network configuration handled by NetworkManager...." |
| KNOPPIX is a bootable disc with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational disc, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the disc can have up to 10 GB of executable software installed on it.

Klaus Knopper has announced the release of KNOPPIX 8.1, the latest stable version from he project that pioneered the concept of an easy-to-use Linux live CD with complete hardware support. This release comes with LXDE (default desktop), KDE Plasma 5.8 and GNOME 3.24: "Version 8.1 of KNOPPIX is based on the usual picks from Debian stable (Stretch), testing (Buster) and unstable (Sid) for newer graphics drivers or desktop software packages. It uses Linux kernel 4.12.7 and X.Org 7.7 (Core 1.19.3) for supporting current computer hardware. New in 8.1: BFQ (Budget Fair Queue) scheduler, now included in the standard kernel within the multi-path scheduler, automatically activated for slow disks, kernel and system software (Debian Stretch + Buster) updated; LibreOffice 5.4.1, GIMP 2.8.20; Chromium 60.0.3112.78 and Firefox 55 web browser with Ublock Origin and NoScript security plugin; automatic expansion of overlay partition on USB flash without reboot after 1:1 copy of ISO hybrid image on USB flash...." It uses Linux kernel 3.15.6 and X.Org 7.7 (X.Org Server 1.16.0) for supporting current computer hardware. In addition to the 32-bit standard kernel, the 64-bit edition of the same kernel is installed on the DVD edition, supporting systems with more than 4 GB of RAM and chroot to 64-bit installations for system rescue tasks. In the DVD edition, the bootloader will start the 64-bit kernel automatically if a 64-bit capable CPU is detected (unless manually specified otherwise).
