Zephix
Zephix is a live Linux operating system based on Debian's stable branch. It runs totally from removable media without touching any files stored on the user's system disk. The aim of Zephix is to provide a free modular operating system that users can carry with them and use wherever there is a laptop or a desktop system available. The default ISO image comes without any graphical interface, but several desktop modules are available separately, together with other various popular application modules. Users can also create their own modules using built-in scripts.

Tilman Sauerbeck has announced the release of CRUX 2.5, a minimalist, i686-optimised Linux distribution for advanced users: "Twelve months after the last release, today we published CRUX 2.5. Release notes: includes glibc 2.8, GCC 4.3.2, Binutils 2.19, Linux kernel 2.6.27.8 and X.Org 7.4; glibc does not contain all possible locales any more; the runtime linker configuration has been greatly simplified by adding a configuration directory /etc/ld.so.conf.d; GCC depends on libgmp and libmpfr now, both have been added to core; a new port inetutils replaces inetd, netkit-ftp and netkit-telnet; hotplug has been removed because it wasn't in use since a long time; libpcre has been added to core; slocate has been replaced by mlocate; cdrtools has been replaced by cdrkit." CRUX is a lightweight, Linux distribution for computers running on 64-bit x86 processors. The distribution is targeted at experienced Linux users. The primary focus of this distribution is "keep it simple". The project's latest release is CRUX 3.7 which features version 5.15.55 of the Linux kernel along with updates for the X.Org display software and for Wayland. "CRUX 3.7 comes with a multilib toolchain which includes glibc 2.36, gcc 12.2.0 and binutils 2.39; CRUX 3.7 now includes Wayland 1.21.0; ports continue to default to X.Org, but Wayland can easily be installed alongside and run in either pure Wayland or Xwayland mode; if you decide to run a Wayland session, you will need to enable the 'contrib' collection and rebuild a few ports (for example xorg/mesa) to make it fully available; the ISO image is processed with isohybrid and is suitable for burning on a CD and putting on a USB drive; UEFI support is available during installation with dosfstools, efibootmgr and grub2-efi/syslinux is available during installation; because all bootloaders are in our opt collection now, no bootloader is installed as a core port by default; to give the possibility to select a bootloader we have added a new menu to setup." Juergen Daubert has announced the release of CRUX 3.6, the latest stable build of the project's lightweight Linux distribution featuring a straightforward tar.xz-based package system, BSD-style init scripts, and a collection of trimmed packages: "The CRUX team is happy to announce the release of CRUX 3.6. CRUX 3.6 comes with a multilib toolchain which includes glibc 2.32, GCC 10.2.0, Binutils 2.35.1, Linux kernel 5.4.80 (LTS), X.Org 7.7 and X.Org Server 1.20.10. The ISO image is processed with isohybrid and is suitable for burning on a DVD and putting on a USB drive. UEFI support is available during installation with dosfstools, efibootmgr and grub2-efi/syslinux. Because all bootloaders are in our opt collection now, LILO is no longer installed as a core port by default. To give the possibility to select a bootloader we have added a new menu to setup. Important notes: glibc depends at buildtime on Python 3 now, Python 3 and its dependencies have been moved from the opt collection to core; glibc removed rpc and nsl stuff, we've added the libnsl and rpcsvc-proto ports; we renamed openrdate to rdate, jdk to jdk8-bin and mesa3d to mesa...." Breaking changes include the move of dbus configuration from /usr/etc to /etc, so backup your configurations before updating. Another potential headache may be various projects' move from autotools to newer build systems - glib may cause some problems here and dependent ports will need to be rebuilt. Juergen Daubert has announced the release of CRUX 3.0, a lightweight, x86-64 optimised Linux distribution targeted at experienced Linux users: "More than 11 years after the release of CRUX 0.5 for i686, CRUX 3.0 is the first release for the x86-64 architecture. At the time Per Liden had created CRUX, the i686 processor on base of the 32-bit Intel IA-32 architecture was state-of-the-art and therefore chosen by him as the default optimization for CRUX. But nowadays the i686 architecture is more or less obsolete, at least for desktop machines, and superseded by the x86-64 architecture. Toolchain updates: CRUX 3.0 comes with a multilib toolchain which includes glibc 2.16.0, GCC 4.7.2 and Binutils 2.23.1. Kernel: Linux 3.6.11. CRUX 3.0 ships with X.Org 7.7 and X.Org Server 1.13.0." Juergen Daubert has announced the availability of the first release candidate for CRUX 3.0, a keep-it-simple Linux distribution designed for more advanced Linux users: "The CRUX team is pleased to announce the first release candidate of the upcoming CRUX 3.0. More than 11 years after the release of CRUX 0.5 for i686, CRUX 3.0 will be the first release for the x86_64 architecture. We do not have release notes yet, so some notes below: an update from 2.8 i686 to 3.0 is possible but you have to rebuild all installed packages that are not part of the ISO image - we will continue to update the CRUX 2.8 repositories for the near future but encourage all users to update to 3.0; a 32-bit compatibility ports tree is available but not enabled by default; enable CONFIG_IA32_EMULATION in your kernel configuration, without that option you are not able to build 32bit stuff, even a chroot into a 32bit system, e.g. CRUX 2.8, is not possible without it!
