IndLinux
The goal of the IndLinux project was to create a Linux distribution that supports Indian languages at all levels. This "Indianisation" project will strive to bring the benefits of Information Technology down to the Indian masses. We want to make technology accessible to the majority of India that does not speak English. The task of localisation has several pieces that need domain expertise. Some examples are I/O modules, development of fonts, kernel enhancements, word translation etc. The project was looking for experts and volunteers to champion the cause of Indian language computing. You may volunteer and participate here. The Indian Linux project was open source and completely free. It was licensed under the GNU General Public License.

About PLD
PLD Linux Distribution is a free, RPM-based Linux distribution, aimed at the more advanced users and administrators, who accept the trade-offs of using a system that might require manual tweaking in exchange for flexibility. Simultaneous support for a wide variety of architectures and non-conservative approach to RPM usage provide the users with a consistent environment on almost all available architectures.

Distribution Release: PLD Linux Distribution 2.0 |
The PLD project has announced the release of PLD Linux Distribution 2.0. The actual PLD 2.0 package tree was declared stable in early April, but it took several weeks to generate CD and DVD images for 6 architectures (i386, i586, i686, Athlon, AMD64, and PowerPC). PLD is an independent, RPM-based distribution using an advance package manager called "Poldek" and designed for users who aren't afraid of the command line. The new stable release provides a choice between kernels 2.4.34.2 and 2.6.16.45 with built-in virtualisation support (Linux VServer), together with over 13,000 RPM packages, including X.Org 6.9.0, KDE 3.5.6, GNOME 2.14, Xfce 4.4.0, OpenOffice.org 2.1.0, etc. Please visit the project's home and product pages to learn more about the new release. The CD and DVD images are available for download from here: pld-2.0-CD01.i686.iso (693MB, MD5), pld-2.0-CD01.amd64.iso (778MB, SHA1).

Distribution Release: PLD Linux Rescue CD 1.99 |
The PLD project has released a specialist text-only mini live CD based on PLD Linux: "PLD Rescue CD is a bootable disk that contains a live Linux distribution based on PLD Linux (2.6.16.20 modular kernel). Furthermore, this version uses transparent compression (SquashFS) to fit about 180 MB of software onto a single mini CD 50 MB in usable form. PLD Rescue CD can be used to rescue ailing machines, perform intrusion post-mortems, act as a temporary secure Linux-based workstation (using SSH, VPN connecting to remote host - other networking clients are also supported), install PLD Linux, and perform many other tasks that we haven't yet imagined." Visit the PLD Linux Rescue CD project page to find out more. Download: x86/rescue.iso (55.0MB, MD5) or x86_64/rescue.iso (45.7MB, MD5).

Distribution Release: PLD Live CD 0.95 |
This is a new and improved release from the PLD Live CD project: "I've released [PLD Live CD] 0.95. The main difference between 0.94 [and 0.95] is a newer kernel (2.6.6). nForce2 and Intel8{6,7}5 now works. I've also upgraded PCI ids for sound cards and added two more fluxbox styles in pretty profile. In general, if 0.94 works for you, you don't need to download this version. It's a bugfix release for nForce2 and some owners of Intel chips." Read the full announcement on the project's web site (now also available in English). Download: pldcd-0.95.iso (700MB).

Distribution Release: PLD Live CD 0.90 |
PLD Live CD is a live CD based on PLD Linux Distribution. The recently released version 0.90 is probably the first live CD with the new GNOME 2.6.0 as its default desktop, although those who enjoy trying out different desktop environments will be pleased to find KDE 3.2.1, XFce4, IceWM, Fluxbox, TWM and WindowMaker as options during login. To login, type either "user" or "root" into the GDM login dialog. While the distribution's web site is in Polish only, the live CD itself defaults to English. PLD Live CD is a welcome relief from the string of KNOPPIX-based live CDs that have hit the distribution scene in recent months, and as such, it is worth the download. Get it from one of the mirrors: pldcd-0.90.iso (701MB). If you can read Polish, the distribution's home page list some of the major changes in version 0.90.

Distribution Release: PLD 1.0 |
The PLD Linux Distribution project has released PLD 1.0 stable, code name "ra". There is no official announcement and the only indication of the release are the readme files accompanying all ISO images. The images have been produced for the i386, i586 and i686 architectures; of the four available images, the "base" image is essential while the disk 1 is recommended. The following quick links will get you the ISOs for the i686 architecture: pld-i686-base.iso (628MB) and pld-i686-1.iso (633MB). You can find images for the other architectures in this directory or on one of the mirrors. No rest for PLD developers - the next version, PLD 2.0 (code named "ac") has already been branched.

PLD Linux Distribution 1.0 RC1 |
The PLD Linux Distribution project has released PLD 1.0rc1, code named "ra". The release announcement (in Polish) has all the details including information about support for Alpha, PPC and SPARC architectures. Downloadable ISO images have only been made for i386, i586 and i686, however. The following links will get you to the three ISOs for the i686 architecture: pld-i686-1.iso (636MB), pld-i686-2.iso (637MB) and pld-i686-3.iso (98MB). If you need them for other architectures, this is the directory to browse into; alternatively, this world-wide mirror list might also come handy in case the master FTP server gets too crowded.

Distribution Release: PLD 1.0 Beta 1 |
After more than 2 years in development, the PLD Linux Distribution is coming closer to its 1.0 release. Code named "Ra", the first beta is now available, according to this announcement (in Polish), for download and testing. The three images can be obtained from these mirrors: pld-i686-base.iso (633MB), pld-i686-1.iso (637MB) and pld-i686-2.iso (510MB). The above images are for the i686 architecture, although i386 and i586 ISOs are also provided; browse the FTP directory if you need those. PLD is an RPM-based distribution with a twist -- a unique package management called "poldek" has the apt-get-like ability to resolve dependencies and fetch all required packages. If I've aroused sufficient interest in you, dear reader, then these are the next places to visit: PLD home page (English or Polish) and a brief review published earlier this year by linux.ie.
