LinuxTLE is a Thai community distribution based on Ubuntu, with emphasis on complete support for Thai throughout the user interface. A major new update, version 9.0 "Hua-Hin" and based on Ubuntu 7.10, was announced today. Some of the new features in this release include: support for 3D desktop features with Compiz Fusion; Iceweasel with pango-ligature and LibThai patches for Thai support; Thai-enabled OpenOffice.org 2.3.0; new fonts (Arundina, Angasana, Cordia); updated Thai scalable fonts by TLWG; introduction of the Brasero CD/DVD burning application and DisplayConfigGTK display configuration utility; new artwork and desktop theme. LinuxTLE is a community Linux distribution developed in Thailand and designed for the Thai speaking audience. The early versions were based on Red Hat Linux and Fedora, but starting with version 8.0, the developers have chosen Ubuntu as the distribution's new base system.

Distribution Release: LinuxTLE 8.0 |
|
LinuxTLE 8.0, code name "Patong", has been released. LinuxTLE is a community project, developed in Thailand, with the goal of delivering a complete desktop Linux solution to the speakers of Thai. Unlike the distribution's previous versions, which were based on Fedora Core, LinuxTLE 8.0 is the project's first release that uses Ubuntu (version 6.10) as its base system. The new product comes with the Linux kernel 2.6.17.11, X.Org 7.1, GNOME 2.16, Firefox 2.0 (with Java and Flash plugins) and OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 with full support for Thai. On the localisation front it includes several Thai fonts, as well as LEXiTRON, a Thai - English dictionary (see screenshot). LinuxTLE is a community distribution developed in Thailand and targeting the Thai speaking audience. The project's latest release is a beta build of LinuxTLE 8.0 (code name "Patong"), a distribution now based on Ubuntu instead of Red Hat and Fedora Core as was the case with the previous versions. The release is a re-mastered edition of the Ubuntu 6.10 installation CD, with kernel 2.6.17.10, GNOME 2.16, Firefox 2.0, LibThai 0.1.7 (a set of Thai language support routines), updated TLEDict Thai dictionary and TLE-Center administration module, APT and Synaptic package management utilities, and the usual range of open source software packages and some proprietary kernel modules. After the official release of Thailand's LinuxTLE 7.0, an updated, single-CD "Lite" edition of the product is now also available. This is an installation CD, not a live CD. Updates include the following: kernel 2.6.10 optimised for i686 processors; X.Org 6.8.1; GNOME 2.8.1; OpenOffice.org TLE 1.1.2; Xiterm+Thai 1.0.6; Thai TrueType fonts: Loma, Norasi, Garuda, Kinari, DBThaiText, TlwgMono, Purisa, JS; ArnThai 2.0; LEXiTRON 2.0 Pre2; GIMP 2.2.3; Firefox 1.0; K3B 0.11.18; and other updates. LinuxTLE version 7.0 (code name "Waghor") has been released. LinuxTLE is a project of OpenTLE, Thailand's premier open source development community, partly sponsored by the Thai government. The distribution is loosely based around Fedora Core, although many of the included packages are independently maintained. Version 7.0 includes kernel 2.6.9, GNOME 2.8, KDE 3.3.1, Thai-enabled OpenOffice.org, pre-configured apt, scripts for easy installation of the NVIDIA driver, Flash plugin, wireless network card drivers and other applications. The developers of Thailand's LinuxTLE have announced a new beta release of LinuxTLE - version 5.5.92, code name "AowThai". The release features Linux kernel 2.6.9 with ipw2100, ipw2200, NVIDIA, squashfs and preem; glibc 2.3.3 with NPTL, GCC 3.4.2, X.Org 6.8.1, GNOME 2.8.1, KDE 3.3.1, OpenOfficeTLE 1.1.2, Firefox 0.10.1 and many other up-to-date packages. Bug fixes: new users can now be added during installation; TLE's GTK+ theme updated and optimised for speed; NTFS partitions are now loaded by default; Centrino ipw2100, ipw2200 wireless network cards are now supported and configured automatically. Known issues: Glade doesn't work, Kbabel crashes when attempting to input Thai characters." Read the full release announcement (in Thai). The developers of Thailand's leading Linux distribution, the Fedora-based LinuxTLE, are readying their next release, version 5.6 and code name "AowThai". This is a highly cutting edge release with the following major components: Linux kernel 2.6.8 + ipw2100, NVIDIA and Squashfs; glibc 2.3.3 (with NTPL, compiled for i686); GCC 3.4.1; Xorg-X11 6.8.1; GNOME 2.8.0; KDE 3.3.0; Mozilla 1.7.3; Firefox 0.10.1; Thunderbird 0.8.0; Evolution 2.0.1; GIMP 2.1.6. The distribution includes a range of Thai-specific software and Thai input, as well as a Thai-enabled edition of OpenOffice.org, called OfficeTLE. Thailand's first Linux live CD, based on LinuxTLE 5.5, has been released: "The National Electronic and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC) and the Thai Linux Working Group (TLWG) have released LinuxTLE 5.5 Live CD. The product is based on Fedora Core with elements borrowed from KNOPPIX and full support for the Thai language. The default desktop is GNOME 2.6.0.
