Distribution Release: Yoper Linux 2010 |
|
Tobias Gerschner has announced the release of Yoper Linux 2010, an independently developed distribution optimised for desktop use: "After an extended RC1 period and a few hiccups with our main server we are finally happy to announce the immediate availability of Yoper Linux 2010. The RC2 feedback was a big thumps up from all sides. So what's in it? A well-tuned 2.6.33 kernel with focus on desktop interactivity and rich driver functionality. For those who look at gaining an extra inch of interactivity get the kernel-bfs package installed. It contains an alternative CPU scheduler which is aimed at the average desktop CPU, instead of the broad range of CPUs the main kernel scheduler has to support. The release is available with the following desktop environments: KDE 4, KDE 3, LXDE and Xfce." Here is the brief release announcement. |
OSNews has published a review of Yoper Linux V2: "Yoper Linux V2 was released a few weeks ago (July 13, 2004). After reading the release announcement on Yoper's website, I decided I had to try it. Yoper is an interesting little distribution with definite speed benefits as we have noted. However, I do have a few complaints about it." Read the full review with screenshots here.

YOPER: 'Your Own Operating System' Revealed |
|
Desktop Linux interviews Andreas Girardet, the founder of Yoper, a New Zealand-based Linux distribution: "Yoper has had tens of thousands of downloads since the 6th of December 2002 and is very well received by thousands of people, especially non-Linux users who finally have found an Open Source operating system that replaces their non-UN*X OS's. With the help of these users we have been able to fix hundreds of issues to the point in which rc3 is certainly going to be an amazing experience for anyone who is willing to give some harddisk space to this project (2.2GB). Lots of focus has been put into the look and feel of the system, notably HW openGL support for NVidia and Matrox and enhanced font support." Visit this page to read the interview.

New users may be taken back by the text install but penguinists used to tinkering will find the install to be a no-brainer." Read the full story here.
