The VLOS project has announced the availability of the first release candidate of VLOS 1.3.1: "VLOS 1.3.1-rc1 is ready for download. This release includes the following updates and enhancements: updated to latest udev and dbus; new modular KDE-VLOS with revamped new look using new Kickoff menu; updated to Beryl 0.1.2, GNOME 2.16.2, KDE 3.5.5; new theme and icons in GNOME; updated ATI and NVIDIA drivers; Songbird now included as media player; new webcam driver; new rt73 driver for the RaLink RT73/2571 wireless chipset; new hardware auto-detection system based on udev and hotplug; faster boot time; new X.Org with AIGLX support; updated Azureus to latest version." VLOS (Vidalinux Desktop OS) is a powerfull, stable and easy-to-use Linux distribution. The desktop components are based on the best projects of the open source community including the GNOME desktop environment, Firefox browser, Evolution mail and calendar client, Gentoo Linux system and portage package manager. VLOS includes additional multimedia and productivity applications for the home user including media players, browser plugins for Flash, RealPlayer, PDF viewer, media, graphics design and administration tools.

After 3.5 years of inactivity, the VLOS project has been resurrected. A new test build of the distribution which is now built using Daniel Robbins's Funtoo stages and which uses the Entropy package manager and the Sabayon Linux system installer, has been released: "After three and a half years on hold, the VLOS project returns with a new vision for the future. Today we are pleased to introduce the first alpha of what will be our stable VLOS 2.0. It includes countless improvements: based on stages from Funtoo by Daniel Robbins with Linux kernel 2.6.31, GNOME 2.28.1, GCC 4.3.3, glibc 2.9 and X.Org Server 1.7.2; based on Sabayon Linux using Entropy package manager and installer; VLOS is now a live DVD and can be used as a rescue disc; moved from HAL to DeviceKit-power, DeviceKit-disks and udev; includes WINE by default and is able to run supported Windows applications; uses the ext4 file system by default." A new stable version of VLOS, a user-friendly, Gentoo-based distribution for desktop computers, has been released: "Today we are proud to announce the release of VLOS 1.3 as stable. Changes and fixes from beta3: updated to GCC 4.1.1, glibc 2.4, XGL and Compiz Quinstorm; fixed KDE problems with Compiz; updated to latest base layout, kernel and portage 2.1.1. Also, today I want to announce the open-community development of VLOS; the full version will be free of charge and the community will manage the project and development of VLOS. We are recruiting volunteers, developers and enthusiasts who want to participate and help us." More details in the release announcement. The third beta of VLOS 1.3 has been released for download and testing. The most notable changes include: "Fix unable to switch to console when in X Window; fix ugly fonts in KDE; build KDE with Zeroconf and Arts support; added bcm43xx and ipw2100 firmware; added KDE ebuilds to overlay; fix rar support in file-roller; update to Portage 2.1; GNOME updated to 2.14.3, KDE to 3.5.4; added DejaVu fonts; added animated cursor in X server; NVIDIA drivers updated to latest version; kernel updated to new 2.6.17; Madwifi module now working; added server packages and NetworkManager...." Development Release: VLOS 1.3 Beta 2 |

The second beta of VLOS 1.3 has been released: "This is third development release on our road towards VLOS 1.3, which will be released in September 2006. This version fixes many things, we hope you try it to see how well it works and reports bugs at Bugzilla. This version doesn't include KDE but you can install it using our binary repository." The latest version of the Gentoo-based desktop distribution ships with kernel 2.6.17 and includes new X.Org 7.1 and GNOME 2.14.2. Read the release announcement and changelog for more information. After a series of alpha releases, the first beta of the Gentoo-based VLOS 1.3 has been released: "A new version of VLOS 1.3 is available for download." The new release includes a number of major changes, such as improvements to the Gentoo port of Anaconda and new Mono-based applications, including Beagle, F-Spot and Banshee. It also comes with a modular X.Org 7.0 and uses 'gnome-mount' for mounting external storage devices. Among applications, GNOME has been upgraded to version 2.14.1 and KDE to 3.5.2.
