Vine Linux 4.0 for i386 and PowerPC processors has been released. From the release notes: "This is Vine Linux version 4.0. Desktop environment: GNOME 2.14.2, including GTK+ 2.8 and glib 2.12, changed the GNOME/GTK+ theme to a better-looking Vine Linux theme; Firefox 2.0 (custom build for Vine Linux); Anthy is now included in place of Canna, SCIM and kinput2; default Japanese fonts - VL Gothic Font family is included as a default font for user interface, TeX and printing; movie player Totem and music player BMP (Beep Media Player). Kernel: this version contains kernel 2.6.16.29 with many driver updates and backports, which in turn supports many new devices. Vine Linux is a supreme Linux distribution with integrated Japanese environment for desktop PCs and notebooks. Project Vine was founded by six members of the Project Japanese Extension (JPE) in 1998 and has been developing Vine Linux with help of many members and volunteers. Vine Seed, the development version of Vine Linux, is a public software repository, which all developers are welcome to join and contribute to. Out-of-the-box Kanji support is available throughout most applications and Japanese input support is provided by either the FreeWnn (or Wnn6 in the commercial "CR" edition) or the Canna input server.

Distribution Release: Vine Linux 6.5 |

Daisuke Suzuki has announced the release of a new version of Vine Linux, a general-purpose Japanese Linux distribution with RPM package management. Code-named "Poupille", Vine Linux 6.5 upgrades the Linux kernel to the long-term supported 4.4 branch and provides updates to many popular applications, but it continues to include GNOME 2 as the default desktop environment. From the release notes: "Vine Linux 6.5 (Poupille). Vine Linux 6.5 has following features (highlights): update the software collection; update Linux kernel to 4.4.y; update toolchain (GCC 4.9.3, glibc 2.23, Binutils 2.26); bundle newer software - Firefox 52, Thunderbird 45, LibreOffice 5.2, OpenJDK 1.7.0.91, OpenSSL 1.0.1u; improved stability; improved look and feel; improved hardware support; new user-friendly tools." Development Release: Vine Linux 6.5 Beta 1 |

Daisuke Suzuki has announced the availability of the initial beta build of Vine Linux 6.5, an upcoming new version of the popular Japanese distribution whose origins date back to 1999 when it evolved from Project Japanese Extensions (PJE) into a Japanese operating system based on Red Hat Linux. This is the project's first release in some 18 months and as such, it comes with plenty of updates (even though the default desktop environment remains GNOME 2.32). Some of the changes include: update to Linux kernel 4.4 which is the latest kernel branch with long-term support; updated toolchain - GCC 4.9.3, glibc 2.23 and Binutils 2.26; updated Firefox 47.0.1 and Thunderbird 45.2.0; updated OpenJDK 7u91; updated LibreOffice 5.1.4; updated OpenSSL 1.0.1t. This is the first of several expected beta builds before the arrival of a stable 6.5 release later this year. Daisuke Suzuki has announced the release of Vine Linux 6.3, an updated version of the project's general-purpose Japanese Linux distribution (and one of the world's oldest one, with beginnings dating back to 1999) featuring GNOME 2.32 as the default desktop environment: "Vine Linux 6.3 (Malartic-Lagraviere). Daisuke Suzuki has announced the release of Vine Linux 6.1, the oldest and most prominent community distribution of Linux in Japan. This release, code-named "Pape Clement", comes after about a year of development and includes the following software applications and features: Linux kernel 3.0.38 with long-term support; Mozilla Firefox 14.0.1 and Thunderbird 14.0; X.Org Intel driver with support for Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge microarchitectures; LibreOffice 3.5.5; Adobe Flash Player 11.2 and Adobe Reader 9.4; OpenJDK 1.6 runtime; MPlus Outline and Aoyagi fonts; all errata notices since the release of Vine Linux 6.0. It is recommended that all 6.0 users upgrade to the 6.1 release as soon as possible. The new release is built on top of a Linux kernel 2.6.35 and includes glibc 2.11.1, GCC 4.4.5, X.Org Server 1.10.2, GNOME 2.32.2 and Firefox 5.0. Daisuke Suzuki has announced the release of Vine Linux 5.2, a Japanese general-purpose community distribution. This is mostly a security and errata update of the free distribution which does not contain any proprietary components, non-free applications or non-free fonts. Some of the more interesting changes include: miscellaneous package version updates (Firefox 3.5.15, Pidgin 2.7.5, Sylpheed 3.0.2, Thunderbird 3.1.6); improved video card support for various Intel, NVIDIA and ATI cards; system installer fixes, including improved detection of FAT file systems, support for SD cards and Firewire controllers, and better detection of wireless network cards; updated list of APT mirrors; the DVD edition now includes the Vine Linux manual. Daisuke Suzuki has announced the release of Vine Linux 5.1 (code name "Cheval Blanc"), a Japanese general-purpose community distribution available for the i386, x86_64 and PowerPC architectures. This is a minor update in the Vine 5.x series that integrates all the bug-fix and security updates announced since the 5.0 release, but otherwise provides no new major features and only a few package version updates. The product's base system remains unchanged. This update was compiled as part of the project's preparation for the two-day Open Source Conference 2010 which starts today in Tokyo, Japan. Since this is not a commercial edition, non-free applications and fonts are not included on the CD/DVD. Instead of proprietary ATOX Japanese input and Ricoh/Dynacomware fonts, this FTP edition contains Anthy and free TrueType fonts. Vine Linux 5 has the following new features: lightweight and high-speed; restructured software collection; support for x86_64 architecture; look and feel improvements; new user-friendly tools; new USB/DVD installable images." Vine Linux 5.0 is based on Linux kernel 2.6.27 with glibc 2.8 and GCC 4.1.2, the default desktop is GNOME 2.26 using X.Org Server 1.6.3.
