VectorLinux
VectorLinux was a small, fast, Intel based Linux operating system for PC style computers. The creators of VectorLinux had a single credo: keep it simple, keep it small and let the end user decide what their operating system was going to be. What has evolved from this concept was perhaps the best little Linux operating system available anywhere. For the casual computer user there was a lightening-fast desktop with graphical programs to handle daily activities from web surfing, sending and receiving email, chatting on IRC to running an FTP server. The power user will be pleased because all the tools are there to compile programs, use the system as a server or perhaps the gateway for home or office computer network. Administrators will be equally pleased because of the small size and memory requirements, so the operating system can be deployed on older machines that have long been forgotten.

A Slackware for your Macintosh, or Slackintosh, is a Linux distribution designed to run on your PowerPC-based hardware. Version 11.0 was released today: "We are proud to announce that Slackintosh 11.0 has been released! Slackintosh 11.0 includes Linux 2.6.17.13 with glibc 2.3.6, KDE 3.5.4 and much more. The installation CD also includes two bootable 64-bit kernels." The new release means that security support for the older version 10.1 will be discontinued; users still running that version are encouraged to upgrade to either 10.2 or 11.0. Also please note that due to a Qt version bug in Slackintosh 10.2, users upgrading from 10.2 to 11.0 should first uninstall Qt before proceeding with the upgrade procedure. For more information please read the release announcement and release notes. Download from here: slackintosh-11.0-install-dvd.iso (3,041MB, MD5); also available via BitTorrent.

Development Release: Slackintosh 12.0 RC1 |
 |
Adrian Ulrich has announced the first release candidate of Slackintosh 12.0, an unofficial port of Slackware Linux to Apple's PowerPC computers: "I've uploaded some Slackintosh 12.0-BETA ISOs. Please note that this ISO release is not final and not tested very well (but installing it on my iBook2 worked just fine). Please give it a try and report bugs! Disk1 + Disk2 are needed for a system with X.Org. Disk1 is fine for servers. The DVD contains everything (including sources). The source-tree is almost frozen, only minor (if any) changes will happen until Slackintosh 12.0 is released. If you are running 10.2, upgrade now, 10.2 will be unsupported after the 12.0 release." Read the brief release announcement for more information. Download (MD5): slackintosh-12.0-install-d1-rc1.iso (634MB), slackintosh-12.0-install-d2-rc1.iso (516MB).
