OpenELEC
OpenELEC was a Linux-based embedded operating system built specifically to run Kodi, the open source entertainment media hub. The idea behind OpenELEC was to allow people to use their Home Theatre PC (HTPC) like any other device one might have attached to a TV, like a DVD player or Sky box. Instead of having to manage a full operating system, configure it and install the packages required to turn it into a hybrid media center, OpenELEC was designed to be simple to install, manage and use, making it more like running a set-top box than a full-blown computer.

The UHU-Linux project has announced the immediate availability of UHU-Linux 2.0, an independently developed Hungarian distribution for home and office use. According to the release announcement (in Hungarian), the project's fourth stable release listens to the code name "Igen", and comes either as a single-CD desktop distribution with GNOME, or a DVD containing the complete tree of UHU-Linux packages and their source codes. The main new feature of this release is transition to the UTF-8 character encoding, supporting central European languages. Other notable new features include improved network handling, automatic mounting of external storage devices, and new keytable selection procedure. UHU-Linux 2.0 also provides many up-to-date software packages, such as Linux kernel 2.6.17, X.Org 7.1, GNOME 2.14 and KDE 3.5.3. Distribution Release: UHU-Linux 3 |

UHU-Linux 3, an independently developed Hungarian Linux distribution designed for the domestic market and featuring the GNOME 3.12 desktop with GNOME Shell, has been released. It comes nearly four years after the project's last stable release, version 2.2. The distribution's home page (in Hungarian) announced the new release yesterday, providing some basic information about UHU-Linux 3. What's new? The SysVInit init system has been replaced by systemd; includes the latest NetworkManager 0.9.10 for network management; includes the latest versions of Firefox (with Flash and Java plugins) and Thunderbird (Chromium is available in repositories); the release comes as a live DVD image with an option to transfer it to a USB storage device. The main components: Linux kernel 3.15.5, GCC 4.8.3, glibc 2.19, GNOME 3.12 (KDE 4.13 and Xfce 4.10 are available in repositories), LibreOffice 4.3, GStreamer 1.2.4. UHU-Linux is an independently developed distribution intended primarily for the Hungarian speaking market. Version 2.2, the project's first stable release in 2.5 years, was announced yesterday. Some of the more interesting changes and features in this release include: the DVD image is now a live environment with option to install it to a hard disk, including any changes made during the use of the live DVD; NetworkManager 0.8 with easy set up of mobile networking and Bluetooth connections; the latest versions of Thunderbird and Firefox with Java and Flash support, as well as the increasingly popular Google Chromium browser; support for installation from USB storage devices; major components - Linux kernel 2.6.33.3, GCC 4.4.2, glibc 2.11.2, GNOME 2.28, KDE 4.4.5, Xfce 4.6.2, OpenOffice.org 3.2.1. The second test release of UHU-Linux 2.2, a general-purpose Linux distribution designed for Hungarian speakers, is out and ready for testing. Changes since test 1 include: informative text in Live and Normal installation modes; in Live mode /boot partition's file system can be ext2 or ext3; in Live mode installation icon on desktop is removed after installation completes; if there are other partitions on hard disk the disk will not be displayed unless user chooses otherwise; new user name will also appear in Live mode; installation failure fixes in Normal mode; DVD image now uses GRUB instead of isolinux so, in theory, it should be possible to boot it from USB-connected devices; DVD image can be written to USB devices with dd; corrections to boot problems on some CD/DVD drives, various minor package updates. The first test release of UHU-Linux 2.2, a general-purpose distribution designed for the Hungarian market, has been released. Over 8,000 changes have been committed do the distribution since the release of version 2.1 in February 2008. Among them, perhaps the biggest one is the introduction of a live system with a graphical hard disk installer that can be run in the background while the user continues to work in the live system. Any changes made to the live system will be transferred to the hard disk at the end of the installation. The new release is built on top of a Linux kernel 2.6.33.2 and includes many of the latest open-source packages, such as GNOME 2.28, KDE SC 4.4 (not on the live DVD), OpenOffice.org 3.2 and Firefox 3.6. UHU-Linux is an independently-developed Hungarian distribution, designed primarily for Hungarian speakers. A new release, version 2.1 and code name "Bumm", was announced earlier today. The fifth stable UHU-Linux release includes a number of new features; worth mentioning among them is the inclusion of Totem and Exaile as the default video and music players, updated system installer, read and write support for NTFS partitions, new external media automount features, and the latest versions of Pidgin, Skype and Firefox with Java and Flash plugins. UHU-Linux 2.1 is built on top of Linux kernel 2.6.23.9, uses glibc 2.6.1 and is compiled with GCC 4.2.2. The default desktop is GNOME 2.20, with KDE 3.5.8 and Xfce 4.4.2 also available. UHU-Linux project has released a second development build of the upcoming major new release of the Hungarian distribution. Some of the more important changes since Test 1 include the following: GNOME NetworkManager has replaced the in-house networking module; storage device auto-mounting is now handled by Hal and Fuse; documentation has been extended by several new chapters dealing with new features in UHU-Linux 2.0, UTF-8 encoding and keyboard shortcut setup; BMPx has replaced XMMS as the default audio player; various bug fixes. The developers of Hungary's UHU-Linux have announced the availability of the first test release of UHU-Linux 2.0. According to the release announcement (in Hungarian), the new version features a number of important conceptual changes to the distribution; these include availability of a complete UHU-Linux DVD, multilingual features (besides Hungarian, the new installer also supports English), switch to UTF-8 as the default character encoding, unified keyboard shortcuts for all desktops, and new automount features. Among the known bugs, there are issues with writing CDs and DVDs in this release.
