Bruce Smith has announced the release of Devil-Linux 1.2.10: "I'm proud to announce v1.2.10 of Devil-Linux has been released. This release includes many new packages, updates to newer versions for many existing packages, and various bug fixes." The Linux kernel in the new version of the popular firewall/server live CD has been upgraded to version 2.4.32 (patched with Grsecurity), while the list of newly added packages includes Awstats, Curl, DSPAM, Logwatch, mod_perl, Nmap and NUT. Distribution Release: Devil-Linux 1.8.0 |

Heiko Zuecker has announced the release of Devil-Linux 1.8.0, a major update of the project's independently-developed distribution that runs directly from the live CD and is designed primarily for server, firewall and router deployments: "Devil-Linux 1.8.0 has been released. This is a major overhaul of Devil-Linux. Most programs and libraries have been updated and the unmaintained ones have been removed. The main file system has been switched to Squashfs, to further reduce the ISO image size." Here is the brief release announcement. Some of the more interesting items from the changelog include: "Build system - Python now compiles all available modules from src/python-modules; added haveged and haproxy; added Google Authenticator for PAM; added Dovecot Pigeonhole; mounting of bootcd.iso from another storage devices is not supported any more, use bootcd.squash; added a new init script post_init.local to help with some initializations scripts that need to run after everything else is up; replace Bacula with Bareos, manual migration is necessary; removed Linux-HA and moved to Corosync 2.x with Pacemaker...." Heiko Zuecker has announced the availability of the first release candidate for Devil-Linux 1.8.0, an upcoming major update of the CD-based distribution designed for servers, firewalls and routers: "Devil-Linux 1.8.0-rc1 has been released. This is a major overhaul of Devil-Linux. Most programs and libraries have been updated and unmaintained ones have been removed. Heiko Zuecker has announced the release of Devil-Linux 1.6.0, a specialist live distribution for firewalls, routers and servers which boots and runs completely from a CD-ROM or a USB Flash drive: "Hello Devil-Linux community. It has finally happened: Devil-Linux 1.6 has been released. This new release brings many new features, lots of improvements, many software updates, Linux kernel 3.2, and a 64-bit edition." NewsForge has published a brief review of the freshly released Devil-Linux 1.0: "One of the biggest improvements in the new 1.0 version is a curses-based setup utility that brings GUI-like administration capability to what is otherwise a command line-based, stripped-down distribution. This utility basically does everything necessary to configure Devil-Linux to the level of a "hardware broadband firewall/router," plus a little extra: You can set up two or three network cards; you can configure a standard firewall script with IP-Masquerading/NAT; and you can configure a DHCP server for your internal network." The Kalamazoo LUG has published a review of the the server-oriented Devil-Linux 1.0, due for release tomorrow: "At work I recently replaced some other Linux servers with Devil-Linux. One of my reasons for this choice is because security is a primary focus in the creation of Devil-Linux. The entire distribution is compiled with the GCC stack smashing protector for buffer overflow protection (except for a very few packages that prevent use of the option). grsecurity is run by default to further enhance security, and many of the server packages are configured to run in a chroot environment by default."
