Vidalinux Desktop OS 1.1 Review |
Linux Times has published a new review of Vidalinux Desktop OS 1.1: "So what's the final word on Vidalinux? Well I really didn't know what to expect from this distribution. It's not one of those that creates a lot of buzz but keeps improving quietly. I've read some of the reviews of the original 1.0 release and after using 1.1 I must say the developers have done a tremendous job in creating a consistently pleasing and functional desktop. Vidalinux now has got all the basics right. The developers simply need to continue with this momentum and run with it. The biggest change I would like to see in the future is the presence of a binary repository of packages. Hopefully Vida will be able to make it available at a low or no cost to users. Besides this, a few minor changes with Porthole would be recommended as far as the desktop experience is concerned." Here is the full story with many screenshots.

Vidalinux 1.1 - Gentoo Done Right |
Mad Penguin has published a review of Vidalinux Desktop OS 1.1: "Vidalinux has got my vote for best non-commercial Linux distribution so far this year. Sure, we're only about a month into it, but as I see it, this has some serious potential and some smooth road ahead of it. Of course, Vidalinux isn't going to dethrone SUSE or Mandrake, or Red Hat anytime soon, but let me tell you it's got the goods and it delivers. I did find a few bugs as I mentioned earlier, but nothing another dot release wouldn't fix in my opinion. ... I feel confident enough in this system to recommend it to anyone with a desire to give Gentoo Linux a try but who might not have the time to compile everything from scratch to get a basic system up and running." Vidalinux 1.1: Better, But Still Not Perfect |
Linux.com has published a brief review of Vidalinux 1.1, a user-friendly Gentoo-based distribution with a graphical installer: "If you're interested in Gentoo but decidedly against long compile times and a lengthy, text-based manual installation procedure, Vidalinux OS 1.1 is the operating system for you. It looks nice, installs quickly, and although the download edition doesn't include many desktop applications, you can add any of Gentoo's more than 8300 packages through Porthole. Aside from the difficulties with the laptop system, the failure to install the proper sound module for the (very state-of-the-art) Intel motherboard, and the inconvenience of Porthole, we didn't experience any major bugs, stability issues, or problems with Vidalinux OS 1.1." Review: Vidalinux Desktop OS Beta 1 |
Cahtech has published a review of the Gentoo-based Vidalinux Desktop OS: "This distribution is an amazing example of how even the most frightening looking installation process for Gentoo can be brought down to an easy and painless level to get far more people into Linux and even Gentoo itself. Whilst Vidalinux is NOT Gentoo and unfairly uses Gentoo support, rsync and package mirror resources, as a Gentoo derivative it does it all. It gives you a powerful desktop with an installation as simple as that of Red Hat's. However, you can't beat the real Gentoo." The full story.
